Politicians love promising things that sound generous. “Free housing,” “free transit,” “free childcare,” “free groceries,” “a guaranteed wage.” It feels compassionate. It feels moral. And Zohran Mamdani’s socialist vision for New York City uses exactly that language. The sales pitch is always the same: government will simply take charge, fund what’s needed, and “everyone will benefit.” But when we stop listening to slogans and actually look at what these systems produce in the real world, the story changes. We've seen what happens when governments try to centrally run economies and guarantee universal benefits without regard to cost. In Venezuela, price controls and nationalization were meant to help ordinary people. Instead, producers stopped producing, food and medicine disappeared from stores, inflation exploded, and millions fled because daily survival became impossible. In the Soviet Union, central planning replaced competition with bureaucracy, and productivity stalled. Factories produced surpluses of things nobody needed while basic consumer goods were scarce. Eventually the economic system simply could not sustain itself. Cuba survived for decades only because it was subsidized by another collapsing socialist state, and once that support dried up, the island entered years of severe decline and forced rationing. These failures did not happen because the leaders “weren’t committed enough” or because “outside forces sabotaged them.” They failed because the basic math doesn’t work. When government promises more than the economy can sustainably generate, shortages, decline, and crisis follow. Reality always wins.

Mamdani’s proposal for New York makes the same structural mistakes. He calls for rent freezes, large-scale government-built housing, city-run grocery stores, free buses, universal childcare, free college tuition, and a steeply rising minimum wage. All of these require ongoing state funding, not one-time spending. And New York City is already running projected budget gaps in the billions. The city depends heavily on a very small percentage of its highest earners to supply a huge share of tax revenue. That means even a modest outflow of those taxpayers — or a shift in where they report their income — would punch a hole straight through the city budget. The politicians promoting these policies assume that wealthy individuals and businesses will simply stay and pay no matter how high taxes climb. That assumption has never held true anywhere. Wealthy people can and do move. Businesses can and do relocate. Investment can and does leave when incentives turn negative. And when the tax base shrinks, the grand promises don’t scale back — they collapse.

Meanwhile, the same government being asked to run housing construction, grocery distribution, education expansion, transit redesign, and wage management already struggles to maintain the transit system, keep public housing livable, and complete infrastructure projects without extreme delays and overruns. It’s not cynical to point this out. It’s observable. If the government has trouble delivering existing services, doubling its responsibilities doesn’t magically make it more competent. That’s not ideology. That’s track record.

Now compare this to capitalist New York — the New York that actually worked. New York became a global center of finance, culture, technology, medicine, fashion, communications, and science because people were free to invest, build, experiment, fail, succeed, and try again. Private enterprise built the skyscrapers. Entrepreneurs created the businesses that employ millions. Innovation, risk-taking, and competition drove productivity and growth. The prosperity generated by capitalism is what finances the very social services the city already provides. Capitalism pays for the public schools, the hospitals, the transit, the parks, and the welfare programs. Government does not create wealth. It redistributes the wealth that private individuals and businesses create. When government grows so large that it begins to undermine the system that generates that wealth, decline sets in.

This is the fundamental difference: Capitalism creates abundance that can be shared. Socialism divides scarcity and calls it fairness. New York thrives when it encourages people to build. It falters when it tries to substitute political promises for economic reality. No matter how inspiring the rhetoric may sound, numbers don’t care. Incentives don’t disappear because someone claims moral urgency. And wealth doesn’t stay where it’s punished for existing.

Socialism sounds nice. It always does. But nice-sounding promises don’t feed cities, don’t build apartments, don’t fuel innovation, and don’t pay the bills. Reality always wins. The only question is whether New York learns from history — or repeats it.
