THE SOUTH STIRS AGAIN

Woplonga's collapse has reopened a confrontation many believed was cooling. As Soviet forces mobilize, STEF expands, and Britarviaquietly looks east, Vawfiss Premier Vladimir Stanislau says the age of “Hegemony” may be approaching its reckoning.

KOLMAGRAD, SSRV - For several months, the possibility of a wider war between the powers of South Tarka and the established nations to their north had appeared to recede. Rhetoric remained, alliances survived, and old suspicions were never resolved. The immediate danger seemed to be passing. Governments that had once spoken openly of competing world orders returned to trade, diplomacy, and the ordinary management of their rivalries. Even the South Tarkan Economic Forum, increasingly associated with the growing influence of the Soviet Socialist Republics of Vawfiss, appeared prepared to allow economics rather than armies to determine the next stage of its competition with what its leaders increasingly call simply “the Hegemony.”

Then Nkosi Mbeki was murdered. Collapse of authority in Woplonga has done more than unleash another civil conflict. It has reopened one of the deepest fractures in the international system, drawing Vawfiss and its allies toward a confrontation with northern powers at precisely the moment when the world remains unsettled by the unanswered questions surrounding St. Tannen. What began in Kiremba as an assassination has spread outward through Kidesh, the oil fields, the refugee routes, and the competing foreign relationships of the Caliphate. General Zakhele Dana, Mbeki’s brother and the most powerful remaining Loyalist commander, has declared himself the rightful successor and secured much of Kiremba while his forces struggle against Al Alquat and other insurgents. His government has now signed a military alliance with Vawfiss, and SSRV-aligned forces are already assisting Loyalists against Al Alquat, the force which many suspect is backed by powers in TuNasai.

To Kolmagrad, that insurgency is no longer an internal Woplongan rebellion. The Soviet government has publicly called Al Alquat’s fighters “puppets of the Hegemony,” transforming the struggle over Mbeki’s succession into another front in the argument over who possesses the right to shape the international order.

Such an argument exploded into public view this week when SSRV Premier Vladimir Stanislau, speaking before representatives gathered at STEF headquarters, delivered one of the most incendiary addresses by a major South Tarkan leader since the tensions between the two blocs began to cool.

Stanislau portrayed the existing international system not as a community of nations but as an arrangement constructed to perpetuate the wealth and strategic dominance of a narrow group of established powers. He attacked what he described as a world economy built around canals controlled by the powerful, trade agreements written disproportionately for those already wealthy enough to dictate their terms, and military relationships that allow influential states to project force far beyond their own continents while condemning others for attempting to secure their immediate neighborhoods.

“The Hegemony does not object to power,” Stanislau told the gathering. “It objects to power it does not possess. Look at its precious canal and the Senate's refusa; to acknowledge sovereignty for Lafleure! The President is even engaging on the Senate Floor with no respect for the separation of powers which are supposed to protect smaller nations. No! Hegemony abounds!”

The Premier argued that the same governments that invoke sovereignty to protect their own interests have repeatedly treated weaker and emerging nations as territories where international strategy may be conducted. He accused the established order of practicing what he called “one-sided military colonialism,” in which overseas bases, intervention, economic pressure, and control of strategic commerce are treated as legitimate instruments when exercised by traditional powers and as threats to peace when pursued by their competitors.

The Premier did not explicitly announce a wider Soviet intervention in Woplonga, nor did he threaten any particular northern government with war. His language nevertheless left little doubt that Vawfiss increasingly views the struggle there as a test of whether South Tarka will continue accepting the international arrangements it has spent years criticizing.

“We have been told to remain patient while others decide which governments deserve survival,” Stanislau said. “We have been told to remain peaceful while weapons, money, and mercenaries cross borders under names designed to disguise their sponsors. We have been told that resistance to this system is instability. Perhaps the time is approaching when the nations outside their Hegemony must decide how much stability their submission is worth.”

For diplomats already watching the southern continent nervously, those words were made more consequential by events occurring beyond the walls of STEF headquarters.

The Soviet Armed Forces have completed a mobilization across the western reaches of Vawfiss, and the SSRV has announced that supply lines capable of sustaining long-term operations are now in place. Immediately across that western frontier lies Britarvia.

The United Revolutionary State has responded cautiously but unmistakably. Its embassy in Tarkinnia formally requested clarification concerning both the purpose and expected duration of the Soviet deployment, emphasizing Vawfiss’s sovereign right to defend itself while observing that preparations of such scale “naturally invite questions among neighbors.” Britarvia has not publicly characterized the Soviet movements as preparations for an attack.

Its own actions, however, are being watched just as closely. General Natalya Burtova has traveled to the mountainous eastern reaches of Britarvia to inspect fortifications, supply depots, communications infrastructure, and local garrisons in Myrovask Oblast. The Britarvian General Staff insists the inspection is routine. That explanation may be entirely accurate. Yet in the current atmosphere, few routine military movements remain in South Tarka.

The geography is difficult to ignore. Soviet formations are preparing for sustained operations along the western reaches of Vawfiss. Across the frontier, Britarvian officers are inspecting their eastern defenses. Between them remain formal diplomatic language, mutual recognition, and an invitation to consultation.

Behind it stands an increasingly armed border. Nor is Vawfiss standing alone. Eshoniahas agreed to direct its surplus agricultural production toward Soviet military use, giving the SSRV an additional source of food for sustained operations. Opieland, situated immediately north of Vawfiss, has joined STEF following several days of negotiations with a Soviet diplomatic delegation and simultaneously concluded a non-aggression agreement with the SSRV. The Forum itself now stretches across a broad collection of nations including Vawfiss, Woplonga, Sheebs, Eshonia, Tuskegee, Lafleure, Yogoslavia, Albertexa, Phelysia, and Opieland.

What was conceived as a Trade Bloc is therefore becoming increasingly difficult to view through economics alone.

However, its members do not share identical governments, interests, or relationships with the northern powers, and several have considerable reason to avoid being drawn into a confrontation between Vawfiss and its rivals. Yet the infrastructure surrounding the organization is beginning to matter almost as much as its charter. Agricultural supply agreements, non-aggression arrangements, petroleum access, diplomatic coordination, and bilateral military relationships are creating connections through which a crisis in one country can increasingly become a strategic concern for many.

Woplonga has shown how quickly that can happen: Dana’s Loyalists control Kiremba and key positions around Kidesh on the Sea of Sansannah, including critical petroleum infrastructure, but they do not control the entire country. Al Alquat continues its insurgency while Edenist tribes wage their own rebellion in the east. Fighting near Kidesh has already killed several Tarkin Red Flame Peacekeepers after a humanitarian caravan was caught between Al Alquat fighters and Loyalist forces battling for control of an oil pipeline. Chief Officer Altun Ashgu of MalDorAeHan has appealed for international assistance and warned that the struggle is becoming a humanitarian catastrophe.

The result is an extraordinarily dangerous collision of intentions. The Red Flame sees civilians requiring food, water, evacuation, and protection. Dana sees a sovereign state fighting for survival. Vawfiss sees a friendly government assaulted by forces it alleges are instruments of the Hegemony. Al Alquat sees a struggle against the remnants of Mbeki’s regime. Other governments see Soviet influence advancing through a country whose enormous petroleum resources and position in the wider South Tarkan system make its political future impossible to dismiss as purely domestic.

Each may believe it is responding defensively to another's actions, which is precisely what makes the moment dangerous.

No one has declared war. No confirmed Soviet attack has occurred on Britarvia, no announcement has been made that STEF will collectively intervene in Woplonga, and no evidence shows that the governments loosely grouped beneath the label of the Hegemony have agreed on any corresponding military action. Indeed, relations that only recently appeared capable of producing a much larger confrontation had cooled substantially before Mbeki’s assassination.

But the machinery that could transform political tension into something far greater is beginning to move again as food is being promised to armies. Oil is being offered for weapons. Fortifications are being inspected. Alliances are being signed. Supply lines are being prepared for operations measured not in days, but in the long term. Across South Tarka, governments increasingly speak not simply about individual disputes but about rival conceptions of the world itself.

At the center of that transformation stands Vladimir Stanislau, whose government appears increasingly willing to say publicly what many within STEF have long discussed privately: that the conflict they perceive is no longer merely with one government, one alliance, or one insurgency, but with an international system they believe was constructed without them and has been maintained at their expense.

Whether that argument produces a new balance of power or the war that diplomats only recently believed they had avoided remains unknowable.

The steel of reserve and quiet resolve remains cold, but cracks appear to be forming.

With tensions rising in the South, I would once again like to make it clear that the military policies that the Libertarians once held onto while in control of our Nation exist no longer. Whereas former Governor Franklin denied the existence of a Hegemony, I firmly stand against this coalition of the powerful.

Upon entering this office, I reached out to Premier Vladimir Stanislau and extended my hand as an ally and I stand here today with that same policy. When others denied nuclear power or its existence to less powerful Nations, I embraced the possibility of seeing those Nations grow.

We are approaching a new age in Tarkin and I want it known that I fully embrace it. We will see who else has the courage to do so in the coming months and years.
