The topic made me curious, so I did some research last night.
27 states have a death penalty
23 states have abolished wholely, inaddition to the following:
-5 have statutes, but no execution in the last 10 years
-6 have statutes, but have formal suspension of execution
-Ohio has statute, but has informal suspension.
Real Count: 16 actively have & utilize the death penalty, 34 do not actively have or utilize the death penalty.
(4 territories do not have, 1 does have but hasn't had an execution ln more than 10 years.)

BBC apologises for defaming couple behind PinkNews
The BBC has apologised and paid “substantial” compensation to the couple behind the world’s largest LGBTQ+ site, after conceding that stories accusing them of sexual misconduct were false and defamatory.
The BBC accepted at the high court that a 2024 iPlayer documentary about the PinkNews founder Benjamin Cohen and his husband, Anthony James, called PinkNews: Behind Closed Doors, had made “very serious, false, and defamatory allegations”.
The corporation also accepted that an accompanying news article had made “false and extremely harmful” allegations that the pair had placed inappropriate pressure on young female staff members to act as surrogates for them. The claims were widely reported. No 10 described the allegations as “very concerning”.
The accusations also meant they were subjected to investigations by the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service, which safeguards the interests of children involved in family court proceedings. The investigations took place before a hearing concerning the couple’s son, who was born via a surrogate.

US faces global outrage over public execution plan
The US is facing global condemnation over a “barbaric” plan to execute a disabled man by firing squad and livestream it to the public, with critics comparing the administration to dictatorships in Iran and Afghanistan.
The Pentagon confirmed on Thursday night that the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, convicted of killing 13 people at a military base at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009, would be livestreamed on 3 December.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights warned yesterday that broadcasting the killing would amount to a public execution and “breach the absolute prohibition of torture”.
The plan also drew opprobrium from politicians, religious leaders and human rights campaigners in the US and abroad. Hillary Clinton, the former US secretary of state, wrote on social media: “A barbaric idea, beneath our dignity as a country. Push back on this.”
