There are currently only six giant pandas on loan to the United States from China, across three zoos: Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C.; San Diego Zoo in San Diego, California; and the latest addition at Atlanta, Georgia's, Zoo Atlanta.
'Panda diplomacy' as it's been dubbed, hit its all time high in the US in 2016 with with 15 total giant pandas on loan to institutions in the US. Beginning with the first official pair Hsing-Hsing and Ling-Ling arriving after President Richard Nixon's 1972 historic visit to China, nearly 70 giant pandas have been fostered in the US.
As of today, there are currently 21 zoos/parks, across 16 countries, and 3 areas outside of mainland China which have giant pandas on loan.
