Herperus Regional Message Board
12 October, 1492, in what we would usually know as Puerto Rico.
A crew of about 50 people are together on a humble, small ship. Yet there are not eating, drinking, fixing the ship, or attending to each other's illnesses and wounds. They are watching the horizon, as they get closer and closer to a land in the distance. That land, of course, is India.
'This is what we have been sacrificing our lives for!' exclaims an ecstatic Frenchman with shoulder-length hazelnut locks. 'Look, my loyal crew, that is India!'
The ship suddenly comes to a halt. The Frenchman turns around yet again to find that he, and his crew, had landed.
'Mr. Colomb!' shouts a worried crewman. 'These natives do not look like Indians.'
'Well then, um, what's your name?'
'Paul, Mr. Colomb.'
'Paul, right, you clearly aren't thinking! We sailed from Bordeaux, went across the Atlantic, and now we're in India! It's not like there's some continent in between we could've landed on.' Colomb greets the 'Indians' in his native French, ignoring the fact that they wouldn't understand him. 'By the name of almighty God, and the French King, I name this port of the Indian coast, Toypey.'
