Empire of Dogetopia

The sudden establishment of the Mercantile League causes shockwaves throughout Edmundian politics. Their platform proves to be exceedingly popular. Their insistence on democracy and the judiciary serve to assuage any fears that they would implement a Coralinian-style authoritarian monarchy in Edmundia. Their model for "responsible expansion" within Reality Three, as well as the establishment of less-risky trading posts in Reality One, are also popular with many people, especially after the chaos that had occurred first with the Cahdigr outbreaks, then with Aristotle, then with Matrisse. Owners of small to medium-sized businesses love their insistence on flat taxes and job creation, and are connected with the mercantile background of the party's leaders. Those in the working and middle classes are also happy with the focus on job creation and economic growth. Individuals in the arts and education are wooed by their promises of more support, while those in STEM are thrilled at the prospect of governmental assistance to help get their innovations and tech startups off the ground.

A day after the announcement by Horacio Horsgel and Lin Ri, an online survey conducted by the Imperial Broadcasting Service shows that the Mercantile League's has an initial popularity rating of 40%, the incumbent Imperial Patriots Party has 20%, the Freedom Caucus has 25% and the other minor parties have the remaining 15%. This makes Prime Minister Joe Scomo very nervous. During the IPP's term in power, the Empire had endured crisis after crisis; from a devastating COVID-19 pandemic, to the collapse of Yikestopia due to the mutated YIMUT-20 virus outbreak, to the quagmire that was Imperial involvement in the insurgent-ridden hellhole of Voteria, to the various crises gripping Reality One and Imperial citizens within Reality One. As such, he was already expecting his popularity to be low. However, the Mercantile League added a whole new dimension to the situation - now, there was a powerful new political force he had to contend with.

The day after the poll, members of the Freedom Caucus take advantage of the unpopularity of the Prime Minister by calling a vote of no confidence in the lower house of the Imperial Parliament. This vote passes by a clear majority, with even some MPs from Scomo's own party voting for the motion. At this, a double-dissolution election is called for both Houses of Parliament. The race was on. All parties had approximately four months to convince the people of Edmundia why they were the best people to run the Empire...

Lin Ri and Horacio Horsegel publicly announce that they’ve rented a local stadium the day after Scomo received the vote of no confidence. The purpose of this is to allow citizens to register with their party. They also allow online registration. The party members are staffing the event and funding it with their own independent wealth. Their party platform is listed on their website, but the registration event also doubles as a Q&A event where Horacio answers questions about the party ideology and their plans for Edmundia.

Lin Ri is not at the registration event, however, because she didn’t want to associate the party with dingoes and therefore, Dogetopia. She was the main brains of the party with Horacio serving as a spokesperson, although both were competent in their own right. Lin Ri was instead purchasing a large amount of property with money the party pooled together; this property would serve as the party headquarters. She also planned to organize a technology event and fund the most innovative among the technologies she found there.

Those not at the registration event or with Ri Li, about 500 individuals, organized art events and gave impromptu speeches on the party. The party only had 6,000 members, so they were reaching out as much as they could with ordinary citizens and their constituents via these art events, speeches, technology events, and registration events. The main star of the show currently was, of course, the Q&A session at the registration event.

This active campaigning manages to win the Mercantile League more popularity. At the registration event, almost 1500 citizens physically attend to sign up. This number is dwarfed by the sheer amount of citizens registering online - at the end of Day 1 of the campaign, almost ten thousand applications have been processed through the website portal. The Q&A event is also a massive success - many constituents are able to directly ask Horatio Horsegel their questions. A huge boost also comes through when a news crews arrive to cover the event, giving the party much-needed press coverage.

The property purchased by Lin Ri - a medium-sized office building in central Gladesopolis - is in a convenient location, fairly close to the seat of Imperial government power. It also only needs minor renovations to become a functioning party headquarters. As for her technology event, she almost immediately receives an influx of applications, both from major corporations and from smaller tech startups who are hungry for funding and brand awareness.

The actions of the individual members also contribute greatly to the reach and appeal of the Mercantile League. Their speeches and events light up local town halls and community centres across the Empire. For the first time, many otherwise marginalised citizens don't feel that they have been abandoned by Gladesopolis any more - they feel actively involved in the political process.

The next major challenge for the League was going to be the Prime Ministerial Debate. Hosted by the Imperial Broadcasting Service, it usually featured leaders from the political parties battling it out on the podium to prove to voters why they were the best people for the job. This year, with the sudden vote of no confidence, the team at the IBS had quickly organised the Debate to take place in a month's time - this would, in theory, give the parties a chance to form their arguments while allowing voters time to make up their own minds before the election.

This year, with the sudden vote of no confidence, the team at the IBS had quickly organised the Debate to take place in a month's time - this would, in theory, give the parties a chance to form their arguments while allowing voters time to make up their own minds before the election.

The League is certainly aware of the Prime Ministerial Debate, and although they didn’t approve of the Prime Minister position, wanting to replace it with a monarch who controlled the executive branch, they didn’t want to change the very foundation of the government just yet. They wanted to take this part of their platform slowly and introduce the idea in a decade or so, when they’ve been part of the political landscape for a while. They were perfectly happy to take decisive political stances on other topics, however. Horacio was once again slated to lead the party in this debate, making it clear to the public that he was the party spokesperson. Lin Ri knew that although Edmundians and Dogetopians were great allies, neither nation wanted foreign interference, and although she wasn’t a “foreign interference”, she was a dingo of Dogetopian origin and didn’t want to subconsciously give the Edmundians a reason to dislike the party. So the most “visible” members of the party were the humans, although the other party members were equally important, just not as visible in the limelight except for their individual speeches and events.

Many of the party members were scientists, artists, Mages, scholars, and a few were warriors, in addition to their merchant background, giving them a diverse array of viewpoints and expertise. The scientists focused most on holding technology, biology, and genetic enhancement events with genuine enthusiasm, funding burgeoning young scientists. The 6,000 original party members were all independently wealthy from their merchant businesses and were all wise enough to invest in Dogetopian stocks, so even the poorest among them was at least a millionaire, although they used their wealth to invest in the Edmundian community, not to buy huge mansions for themselves. The artists held art show events and even publicly showed their own art to the constituents, allowing themselves to be humanized and criticized in good faith, showing that although they were wealthy, they were quite the same as the less wealthy in many aspects. The art events didn’t only include paintings, but also sculpting, musical events, plays, musicals, and less conventional forms of art as well, but they didn’t pay attention to low effort works of art that required no talent, such as modern art where some idiot just stacks two cars on top of one another and calls it art. They had a broad definition of art, but they only wanted skilled, talented, or at least people who were enthusiastic, genuine or tried hard rather than a lazy attempt to leech money off of them with a no effort art piece. Scholars held events preaching about revamping the school system. Mages and warriors silently invested money into party activities such as renovating the party building. Many of the party members went to greet the newer members of the party and hand out pamphlets. They were holding true to their promises before they were even elected into government. In truth, they had been doing this for a while, but on a smaller scale and with less press coverage because they weren’t a party yet. Now with the eyes of the media on them, their events were gaining attention over the empire instead of being a localized phenomenon.

One of the questions asked during the Q&A event was “where did you and Lin Ri meet”. Horacio revealed that he was actually born in Edmundia and was one of the Edmundians who went to the prestigious Pingu boarding academy that the Pingus and Dogetopians had built together, with citizens of many different nations attending. Dogetopians, LUS citizens, Pingus, slimes, bats, Robotnotopians, Edmundians, and other citizens had all gone there to learn together. Horacio had been classmates with Socrates, Coraline II, Dingonium II, Empress Rainbow, and King Yuri, among other impressive individuals. Lin Ri had also attended this academy, where they received the most excellent education achievable. Then, the Noot industries war had broken out, and Lin Ri and Horacio served together as rebels against Aristotle, slaying countless of his minions with a few of the other merchants. After the war, they had lived in Dogetopia for a more years, receiving more education, then Lin Ri funded her own merchant company and invited Horacio to join her, and they’ve been living in Edmundia ever since, occasionally going back to Dogetopia for reshipping or to get more goods or for Lin to visit her family. Most people had assumed that Horacio was of Dogetopian descent since he was in the Dogetopian trading post, but as it turned out, he was actually of Edmundian descent the whole time, although he had been educated by the Pingus, then dogetopia, he was still a patriotic Edmundian citizen.

Great Edmundia wrote:Over the next few weeks, the party membership grew from their highly-educated base of Dogetopian merchants and intelligentsia. This expansion of the Mercantile League’s ranks is driven mainly through Edmundian small to medium business leaders and blue-collar workers. Employees were overjoyed about the renewed focus on jobs and growth, which they felt had been lost with the various crises, mass layoffs from COVID-19 and a perceived heavy government focus on fixing Reality One problems rather than issues closer to home. Employers were also happy with party leaders that reflected their entrepreneurial spirit, as well as the emphasis on creating a skilled workforce.

With the Edmundian intelligentsia, however, it was a different story. Many students and academics in STEM fields were wooed by the Mercantile League’s apparent enthusiasm in funding their projects and research. However, among the arts and humanities faculties, debates began sprouting up about the fairness of the League’s arts funding model. It was clear that the party had a specific set aesthetic standard when it came to art, and this worried some. After all, what really constituted “good art”? Was there an objective standard by which art could be judged? These deep art-philosophy debates had been circulating through Edmundian academic circles for decades, and the actions of the Mercantile League had brought these into the public domain. One of these academics, Professor Anna Ragout of the Gladesopolis University Arts Department, rises to prominence by writing a scathing piece accusing the League of “cultural authoritarianism” in the Gladesopolis Times. Other international relations and national security academic figures also voice their concerns about how there may be some foreign interference from Dogetopia, while some in politics and philosophy hold reservations about whether or not the League was actually sincere about their commitment to democracy, especially in light of the authoritarian monarchical government in the Dogetopian homeland itself. As many of these dissenting people (apart from the national security guys) are left-leaning, they will probably lend their votes to the Freedom Caucus. As the campaign drags on, it seems that the electoral race will be a contest between the Mercantile League and the Freedom Caucus.

In the meantime, Horacio’s response at the Q & A satisfies most Edmundians on the issue of whether or not he was working for the betterment of the Empire. He was perhaps fortunate that as someone of such a high education level, he was actually popular among most ordinary Edmundians. After all, many were suspicious of members of the intelligentsia like those left-wing critics of the League who were seen as living inside a bubble with no real understanding of what everyday people went through.

In any case, the stage was set for the first debate. The other parties also hold big events in the leadup, with the Freedom Caucus using big-name stars like Kate Berry and Lady Papa in their rallies, while the Imperial Patriots run media campaigns focusing on their achievements during their few years in office. The other minor parties, such as the Riflers and Anglers Party, Frontline Workers Coalition and Armed Forces Alliance focus on appealing to and shoring up their respective voter bases.

The Mercantile League had a solid base of Edmundian small to medium business leaders and blue-collar workers. They also had support among the classical artists, encompassing most people who didn’t really support modern art. Art philosophers, modern artists, and classical artists that supported the freedom of all arts to be funded did not support the Mercantile League because they didn’t want to fund any art that was low effort or modern art, which they didn’t believe was even art. They also had the support of animal rights activists, which was ironic since most of the League were carnivores, such as humans, crocodiles, and dingoes. Dogetopians ate meat regularly, but it was lab grown meat, which the League intended to introduce into Edmundia at some point.

The League introduced a sample poll on their website to see how many people were interested in Modern Art, not wanting to make their constituency annoyed by ignoring their demands. They also posted a few other polls on the website to gauge public opinion. There wasn’t much they could do against the arts and humanities facilities that opposed their view on art, but they were willing to give them a chance to explain their position so that they could take it into account and adjust their point of view-and possibly funding if necessary. The further criticism that they were a foreign security threat wasn’t based in reality, but they couldn’t disprove it either. It was true that they were Dogetopian born and raised in most cases, with the exception of Horacio, but most of them had spent at least a decade in Edmundia by now, if not longer, and had come to think of it as their home country. They were patriotic to Edmundia. They also did support democracy, but they wanted to make the King the executive branch, so it was an odd form of democracy indeed. However, this they did not disclose yet, as they did not think that it was a realistic goal. They didn’t want to bother with anything they couldn’t achieve.

Finally, it was time for the debate. Horacio Horsgel stepped out into the limelight and onto the stage with the other party officials from different parties. He was slightly nervous about facing them in a pitched debate, but it didn’t show on his face. He waited for the questions to start, and was ready to answer any question they had truthfully.

He was slightly nervous about facing them in a pitched debate, but it didn’t show on his face. He waited for the questions to start, and was ready to answer any question they had truthfully.

The online poll on modern art came back with a 58% majority in favour of not funding modern arts. Many of the populace did agree with their assessment of "low-effort" art works. The academics were quick to point out that many of the survey participants were blue-collar workers with no real expertise in the arts, but these remarks were in turn criticised for being elitist. After all, if there was not even an agreed definition or standard for art, how could anybody be justifiably excluded from viewing and critiquing it? In any case, it seemed that an academic and broader culture war was likely.

The debate itself was an elaborate affair. Naturally, with COVID-19, attendance numbers were capped and distancing enforced. However, this did not stop the Imperial Broadcasting Service from putting on a good show. The IBS had leased the James R. Schloeffer Entertainment Centre (named after a former Mayor) in Sable Ferret City. Besides Horacio were Prime Minister Joe Scomo of the Imperial Patriots and James McKay of the Freedom Caucus. The leaders of the minor parties were typically not invited to this event, since the logistics of organising a debate with 9 different speakers would be too complicated. The host and moderator of the evening is Christy Ferguson, a seasoned political correspondent with almost 15 years' experience working with the Imperial Broadcasting Service. Once everyone is in their place, she turns to face the audience and the cameras trained on her.

"Good evening, and welcome to this year's first Prime Ministerial Debate. The first of the 2021 presidential debates. This debate is sponsored by the Imperial Broadcasting Service. The IBS has designed the format: six, roughly 15 minute segments, with one minute answers for each of the three main candidates. Then open discussion for the rest of each segment. All campaigns have agreed to these rules. For the record, I decided the topics, and the questions in each topic. I can assure you, none of the questions has been shared with the IBS, or any of the candidates. This debate is being conducted under Imperial Government health and safety protocols. The audience here in the hall has pledged to remain silent: no cheers, no boo’s, or other interruptions so we, and more importantly you, can focus on what the candidates have to say. No noise, except right now, as we welcome the candidates."

There is a small round of applause from the audience before Ferguson continues.

"A lot of people have been waiting for this night, so let's get going. Our first subject is the recent challenges posed to the Empire by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prime Minister Scomo, you were appointed as a replacement for Prime Minister Pallet earlier this year, but your party, the Imperial Patriots, has presided over the entirety of the outbreak. You say that your party's administration has handled this crisis well, but your opponents would beg to differ. My question to all the candidates would be, has this pandemic been handled well? And why, or why not? Prime Minister, you go first in this segment. Two minutes."

Prime Minister Scomo clears his throat.

"Thank you Christy. Now, as I have said before, our government has done the best it can in what truly has been a very trying time. We have been through wars, we have been through natural disasters, but we have never been through a pandemic. This is wholly uncharted territory for us. And, you could say, we have done very well. Through our early implementation of strict border control measures and lockdowns, we were able to save thousands, millions of lives. We have also been using vaccines to stop the spread and get our lives back to normal. We have managed to secure supply from the Altonianic Islands as well as domestically-produced jabs. Now, over 85% of the population has had at least one dose of the vaccine, and 56% have been double-dosed. We have been making great progress so far, and now is not the time to be changing the captain at the helm of the ship."

Then, it is James McKay's turn to speak.

"Well...when I look at the government's handling of the COVID pandemic, what I see frankly has been nothing but failure. The Prime Minister fails to mention that while he was stuffing around with border controls, the disease got into this country and spread throughout our major cities. Sable Ferret City, Gladesopolis and many others all fell, because of the ineptitude of the Imperial Patriots. Their failure to contain the spread led to the decimation of our economy, the closure of many small to medium businesses and the loss of thousands and millions of jobs. Most heinously, innocent people, vulnerable people - the elderly, disabled people, the immunocompromised - perished or became seriously ill, because of this government's shortcomings. My question to the people of Edmundia would be - would you seriously trust this government to "stay the course"? Because, if so, why does it seem like we have already hit the iceberg?"

With this, attention turns to Horatio. It is now his turn to address the issue. Since COVID-19 is not specifically on the Mercantile League's agenda, pundits don't expect this to be a strong suit for them. Perhaps they just needed to give the issue lip service now, and lie in wait for something better to come up...

Horacio was cool under the pressure of public speaking, and he didn’t break a sweat as he watched his opponents speak. Although they were opponents and also had differing views, he believed they were also genuinely doing what they thought was best for Edmundia, which he respected. When it was time for him to speak, he cleared his throat and stepped forward, speaking to the crowd.

“Prime Minister Scomo says that his party has been using vaccines to get things back to normal. Do you know who has been funding the medical health advancements and medical technology industries? It wasn’t Scomo before the COVID hit. We merchants have been heavily investing in Edmundia ever since we got here all those years ago. We don’t claim to be the only funders of the various industries, but we’ve invested in medical technology and bio-engineering. Not only that, but during the pandemic, we gave out free goods to help the people of this country get back on their feet. We care deeply about the citizens of this country. The real focus, however, should be on the economy now that we’ve got Covid almost under wraps. The Mercantile league wants Edmundians to be wealthy and content, and we can deliver on this.”

At this point, the Prime Minister gives a short response to both Horatio and James.

“Alright…so, in response to James’ point, yes, we did lose some good people in our fight against the pandemic, and our thoughts are with their families. However, modelling from the Imperial Civil Defence Agency shows that, if we left the pandemic unchecked with no lockdowns or infection restrictions at all, we would have seen massive spikes with millions, not thousands, infected. As for the economic recovery, as I have said, for businesses to grow, they need stability. Changing the captain of the ship in the middle of our recovery will only jeopardise that stability and our road back to normal.”

With the issue of COVID largely settled, moderator Christy Ferguson turns to another issue.

“So, I will pose another question. Recently, we have seen numerous crises afflicting Reality One, our main interdimensional connection. We have seen a mysterious magical mutation outbreak decimate both our Imperial possession in Pluto and our allies, the Lunar United States and the Empire of Dogetopia. These events will inevitably change our relationship with the nations of Reality One. My question to the candidates would be; how would you manage this change, and how would you handle relations with Reality One? Mr Horsegel, I will let you answer this one first.”

Horacio Horsgel was, of course, in favor of continued diplomacy with Dogetopia, but considering the state of Edmundia at the moment, he was far more concerned with domestic affairs. However, the superior technology of Dogetopia might prove useful, so he didn’t discount foreign affairs right away. Clearing his throat, he spoke up.

“I am in favor of “responsible expansion” within our own reality, where the laws of our universe favor us. Enemy reality warpers and magic users have an especially difficult time here. As such, I believe we should should draw back our colonial presence in reality one, but pepper the reality with smaller, more manageable and escapable trading post. We should offer our military help to our allies as usual, but be more cautious. And we should ask for more Dogetopian technology in various industries and implement it for our own purposes. There isn’t much we can do about reality warpers or magical plagues on our own, so the best we can do is what I’ve outlined.”

(How’s this?)

(Sure)

Ferguson gestures to James McKay.

"McKay...it is your turn to respond to Horatio. You have two minutes."

James nods at this.

"Thank you, Christy. Well, I would like to first say that what has happened has been nothing short of an unbridled tragedy. Our focus now has to turn to taking care of everyone left behind - we need to bring home our troops stationed over there, and get our refugees from Pluto back to their families. At the same time, we need to look to the future. If the events of the Cahdigr Outbreak and the Great Reset have taught us anything, it is that unbridled colonialism and expansion is dangerous. Instead of spending time and resources trying to maintain far-flung possessions abroad, we should be focusing more on fixing problems at home. We have people, good Edmundians, who are struggling to put food on the table, who are stuck in a cycle of imprisonment, who are unable to finish school because they don't have the ability to do so. We as a country should be trying to solve these issues and tackling these inequalities instead."

Ferguson nods, and turns to Scomo.

"Prime Minister, do you have anything to add? Two minutes."

Scomo smiles at this.

"Cheers. Well, first of all, I would like to extend my condolences to those families who have lost loved ones. However, again, I would like to very much stress what I said before. This has been a tragic time of crisis for our Empire. We need to focus attention on rebuilding and recuperating. Resettling refugees, redeploying our forces in the region and restructuring our assets. But, in order to do this, we will need a steady hand. This is not the time to change the captain of the ship. We need stability and certainty. This will allow us to continue working to repatriate the people we still have over there, to properly rebuild what we have left and redeploy our forces so we still retain relevance as a great power in the region.”

At this, Christy turns back to address the rest of the candidates.

“So, does anybody else have anything to add? If not, we shall move on to the next question.”

With this, moderator Christy Ferguson moves on to another, related issue.

"Well...linking on from this, there has, of course, been a lot of talk about properly investigating what has happened in Reality One so we can learn from it. We already know there are several different investigations underway, but there have been calls for an independent Imperial Commission into the crisis. James McKay, you have been chief among those calling for the formation of this Commission. Why do you think this is necessary?"

McKay nods at this.

"Thank you Christy. Well, in short, while what has transpired in Reality One has been terrible, there is still a lot we don't know. What caused the Cahdigr outbreak in Pluto, and is it related to Aristotle in any way? Who is Matrisse? What were their motives? Why have so many of our good citizens perished? These are questions that we need answers to. The Edmundian people deserve closure for the immense human tragedy that has occurred, we need to learn from what has happened so we don't senselessly lose any more lives, and we need to hold this Government accountable for its mistakes. We cannot trust the Executive branch to investigate itself. An independent Imperial Commission will be impartial, and will focus on finding the facts."

Christy nods at this.

"Thank you James. Prime Minister, would you like to respond?"

The Prime Minister smiles.

"I'd love to, Christy. Look, I realise that these past few weeks have been tough on all of us. But, as I said, we need to stay the course. We already have multiple agencies investigating what happened in Pluto and Reality One. Do we really need to add another one? Besides, we have more pressing concerns at the moment. We have millions of refugees still languishing in camps in the LUS, waiting to be repatriated. We have scores of citizens who will need ongoing medical treatment, psychological treatment...and we need to rebuild as well. If we keep looking back to the past, we will never move forward. As I've said before, we need to stay the course, and let our awesome public servants and frontline workers do their jobs."

Christy then turns to Horatio.

"Horatio, would you like to respond? You have two minutes."

Horacio nodded and stood up straighter, addressing the question being asked.

“Of course we should investigate what’s going on in reality one, but we already have multiple agencies investigating. In fact, none of these agencies are even cooperating or sharing knowledge, to the best of my knowledge. The government has become bloated and needs trimming. I believe we should have no more than one to three agencies investigating this, and focus the rest of our attention on the refugees, rebuilding, and medical help for those affected. Also, I think the reason we still don’t know what’s going on is because our agencies are so bloated that information gets lost within them. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for thirty government agencies and commissions that all do the same thing. However, after trimming multiple agencies, I do think an independent temporary commission should be formed to investigate the mistakes of this government in their dealings with reality one, which is different from investigating what happened in reality one altogether. ”

  2. Do not attack unless ordered, and only attack when and where ordered.
Rogue nations can destroy a faction by attacking against or in contradiction to orders, drawing us into battle on undesired fronts. Don't be that guy. Strict adherance to orders is crucial to ensure a successful N-Day for the Army of Freedom.

  3. Shield production is the priority during N-Day.
🛡️ Strategic specialists must focus on building shields exclusively.

The Prime Minister moves to respond to Horatio’s comment.

“Well, with all due respect to Horatio, I would say that whether or not an agency should conduct an investigation should be up to that individual agency. We have a lot of talented people in our bureaus and departments, and we should be allowing them to do their good work, not handicapping them. My ministers are also advising me that each agency is focusing their investigative efforts on stuff that impacts them. The Imperial Civil Defence Agency is reviewing public safety procedures, Homeland Security’s Office of Infectious Disease Control is focusing on the Cahdigr Outbreak, Defence is looking at the Armed Forces’ handling of the crisis, and so on.”

It is at this point that Christy steps in to keep the debate moving forward. After all, there are a lot of issues and a limited amount of time to cover them all.

“So, moving on…since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Freedom Caucus has called for the creation of an Imperial Government Ministry of Health and Welfare separate from the Ministry of the Interior, and the introduction of stronger universal healthcare and social security provisions. McKay, would you like to elaborate on this position? Two minutes”

“Yes, thank you Christy. You see, here in the Edmundian Empire, we pride ourselves on equality and the ability of all citizens to elevate themselves through hard work and perseverance. However, I think it is plainly obvious that these opportunities do not present themselves to every Edmundian. There are people who are genuinely struggling to put food on the table, and yet we are spending billions on stationing troops in other realities. While we send our boys to save lives in other universes, innocents are dying from treatable conditions and crippling poverty right here at home. We have our priorities all wrong. In government, the Freedom Caucus will work to improve access to government services, making it easier for our most vulnerable citizens to get the help they need and deserve. The cornerstone of this new policy will be MediHelp, in which we will be providing government financial assistance to non-urgent surgeries and a range of other treatments. We will also be Imperialising the welfare system, to ensure that all citizens who need it receive financial support. Through this new programme, we will ensure that no Edmundian is left behind.”

For context, the MediHelp scheme is a proposed universal healthcare scheme that the Freedom Caucus is intent on implementing. Currently, healthcare is decentralised and is usually under the domain of the Federal level of government (there are four levels). Many Federal health ministries and departments only provide the bare minimum of free urgent emergency medical treatment, with only the Federal Government of Alfeilm granting their citizens discounts for treatment of cancer and chronic health conditions. Many Edmundians are forced to either rely on private health insurance or go without. The Imperial Government itself barely provides any health services. There are only three agencies within the Ministry of Home Affairs that specifically cater to health concerns; the Imperial Office of Infectious Disease Control, the Imperial Medicine Regulation Administration and the Imperial Institute of Medical Research. There is also virtually no welfare system, with only some national jurisdictions offering social security services. With the introduction of a separate Ministry of Health and Welfare, Imperialisation of the welfare system and the new MediHelp scheme, the Freedom Caucus is looking to make some ambitious changes to this current system…

Horacio nods, and responds when it’s his turn.

“While it’s important to help our allies, we need to help our own boys here in Edmundia. I think we should focus on job creation to give people the opportunity to work and contribute to the economy, but for those too injured to work or otherwise unable, a welfare program should be set up. For the most part though, I don’t think welfare is too necessary as long as we get most people into the workforce. I actually agree with the healthcare plan though.”

Satisfied with this answer, Christy turns to Prime Minister Scomo.

“Prime Minister, it is now your turn to respond. Two minutes.”

Scomo nods.

“Thank you, Christy. Well, as I have said before, this MediHelp scheme by the Freedom Caucus is nothing less than a Communist attempt to centralise authority in the Imperial Government. Why do we allow the Federals to set their own healthcare policies? Because it is they who know what is best for their citizens, not some bureaucrat or politician in a stuffy office in Gladesopolis. A citizen in Alfeilm has different needs to someone living in the highlands of Libertian Edmundia. And, let me also remind you of the last government that had centralised healthcare - Red Yikestopia. Do we really need socialism in this country?”

At this point, McKay looks to Scomo indignantly.

“No, we aren’t introducing socialism here! It is clear that the Federalised system of healthcare is broken, and people are not getting the care they need. We aren’t requisitioning businesses, we aren’t rounding people up to put in prison camps, we are giving them the right to seek medical assistance. Look to some of the Libertian countries for goodness’ sake - look at New Ciceria! They are a healthy democracy, and they have a system of universal healthcare even more comprehensive than what we are planning!”

It is at this point that the moderator intervenes to keep the debate on track. While the issue was obviously contentious, it wasn’t the only one at play and there were still a lot to get through.

“Thank you, everyone. Now, may I remind all candidates that you must wait your turn before speaking and exercise patience. Now, onto the next issue…the Mercantile League has proposed massive changes to the Imperial education system. Horatio, would you be able to explain your party’s position, and why ordinary Edmundians should support it? Two minutes.”
