Philippe I (born 22 January 1971) is the third and current King of Beliany, having reigned since the death of his father, Baudouin I in 2015. Philippe is the head of the House of Coudenburg, which as ruled Beliany since 1955.
Early Life
Born as Leopold Philippe of Beliany in 1971 during the reign of his grandfather, he was the second child and only son of Prince Baudouin of Beliany and Princess Sofia of Scots, then Duke and Duchess of Brabant. He was named in honor of his two grandfathers, the aforementioned King Leopold I of Beliany and Prince Philippe of Royal Genes. He has one older sister, Marie-Sofie who was born two years earlier in 1969. In 2025 it was revealed that he and Marie-Sofie share a younger half-sister, Tærràdhiyà Dærràdsfrūa, Countess of Týrfer born in 2001 as the product of an extramarital affair between their father then King Baudouin and Countess Þænnōrrà of Týrfer.
Leopold Philippe did not enjoy a wholly happy childhood, due to the great strain that existed in the relationship of his parents. Baudouin and Sofia had been married as part of a matter of state, which left with both terribly unhappy. While Sofia attempted several times to kindle some sense of affection between her and her husband, following the birth of a son and thus securing in Baudouin’s eyes an heir, abandoned the effort and the two would live separate lives for the remainder of their marriage for the next forty years. Marie-Sofie and Leopold Philippe would initially spend their years with their mother, notably carefree and adventurous, and grew to fear their imperious and serious father.
The death of his grandfather, King Leopold in 1979 saw Baudouin declare his only son as his heir, ignoring previous discussions that had favored an inheritance of absolute primogeniture. As heir apparent, Leopold Philippe, age 8 was titled Crown Prince, the courtesy title of Duke of Brabant being abolished. As the new crown prince, he was removed from the care of his mother and placed in the hands of two tutors appointed by his father, Jo Fremault and Esteban Pauwels.
Leopold Philippe excelled at his studies and took his unhappiness with a stiff upper lip, dutifully taking up his tasks. However he grew to loath his father, and the two grew to hate one another by the time the crown prince was thirteen. This was exasperated by the deaths of the other male line members of the House of Coudenburg. Though Baudouin had had four brothers, by 1984, all were dead and none had succeeded in having any children of their own. This put the entirely of dynastic pressures on Leopold Philippe.
In 1989 Leopold Philippe was enlisted in the Armed Defense Forces of Beliany, and began his first foray into politics. Where Leopold I had been a radical liberal, and Baudouin staunchly conservative, Leopold Philippe would instead take a more measured and pragmatic centrist approach. Reconnecting with his mother, the philanthropic Queen Sofia, who was far more popular than her husband in her role a a neglected wife, the crown prince effectively formed a rival court to that of his father’s.
Education
While in the Army, Leopold Philippe also attended university from 1989 to 1991 in the capital, with the intent of gaining a degree in political science, though he would stop attending classes after two years in favor of political activism.
Rival Court
The Queen and the crown prince would consistently support the opposition of the king’s favored policies.
In 1998, King Baudouin, again failing to find any suitable foreign princesses for his son, drafted a list of acceptable potential brides for his son to choose from. From this list, Leopold Philippe would court Léonore de Gieters, the daughter of a minor baron five years his senior. In 2000 they were married, with the event being the last royal function attended by Prince Dowager Maximilian, who’d solemnly left the palace since his widower status. Nine months after the wedding, Léonore gave birth to a son, Prince Jacques in 2001.
It was a few weeks later that Prince Consort Maximilian, Philippe’s step-grandfather died, at age 63. While Philippe stayed aligned with his mother, his sister Princess Marie-Sofie became her father’s constant companion after 2002 following his ill health and again she tried to reconcile her mother and father, but they refused to see one another.
In 2004 King Baudouin celebrated his silver jubilee, becoming the longest-reigning monarch in Belian history. For the first time in a quarter century, Queen Sofia and the king appeared together during the celebration. However, after the celebration, King Baudouin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and grew increasingly ill. Marie-Sofie effectively became her father’s nurse. Queen Sofia would make regular visits to her daughter in order to keep up with her husband’s health conditions, though maintained her own court in the countryside, regularly hosting balls, arranging marriages, and humanitarian efforts. Queen Sofia stopped visiting in 2007 when the king fell down the palace stairs and was confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. At the same time, Philippe welcomed two more children, his second son Prince Augustus in 2006 and his only daughter Princess Stéphanie in 2007.
Undeterred in his loathing for his wife, in 2008, Baudouin cut her allowance off entirely against the protest of his daughter and the anger of his son. Philippe and his father reportedly found themselves in a shouting match that only ceased when the ailing king fell into a coughing fit.
Philippe’s mother, unwilling to debase herself by begging her husband, would effectively ‘couch surf’ for the next four years, staying with various friends in the upper class. Amidst this all, however, she maintained her charities and popularity. In contrast, Philippe and Léonore got along well, enjoying a quiet sense of domesticity. Léonore, seeing the adoration her husband had for his mother, sought to emulate her, declining to speak on politics and preferring to focus on charities for refugees, children, and animals.
By 2012, King Baudouin was confined to his bed and in near-constant pain, which drive him to bouts of manic episodes. From late 2012 through all of 2013, Princess Marie-Sofie was the sole connection between the rest of the world and the king, effectively making her Regent and the true ruler from her place at her father’s bedside. In early 2014 however, she called on her brother and had him appointed Regent for their father, leaving the governance to him as she eased the dying king’s pain. A few weeks later, Queen Sofia, having managed to secure her own modest residence in the countryside fell from her horse while riding and suffered a broken hip. The Queen initially recovered but had to go into surgery several more times. Learning of the dying state of her husband, despite the concerns about her health, Sofia rushed to make it to the capital in time to see her son’s ascension.
Reign
King Philippe placed his mother in charge of his father’s funeral, as well as his enthronement ceremony, at which the Queen Mother was given precedence over all the older women of the royal family. Having succeeded in seeing her son’s ascension and finally lavished with the praise and styling due her, Sofia died less than a month later at the age of 70. When entombed next to her husband, her ornate coffin was made to sit ever so slightly above that of the husband so cruel to her in life, forever in the shadow of her triumphant in death.
King Philippe and Queen Léonore represented a much-needed reprieve from the marriage drama of previous generations. Léonore, fearful of being lampooned by the Belian press, lived quietly and became known as the ‘Silent Queen’, often appearing at her husband’s side, but never commenting on matters. Léonore would often cite carrying for her younger children as the reason for her quiet nature when directly asked, asserting her importance as a mother of the future king. Marie-Sofie too serves as a great support of her brother, with her extensive experience of statecraft from her decade at her father’s side, she has been the current king’s chief of advisors. Sibling and marital bliss however have not saved the king from the perennial dislike shared of fathers and sons in the Coudenburg dynasty, with Prince Jacques growing into a carefree and musical lover, despite his enlistment into the Armed Forces cuts a figure reminiscent of the art lover Leopold, rather than the more political Philippe. Philippe as the king has focused on bringing back democratic institutions, such as local elections and parliament, though notably remains an involved and powerful active figure in the governance of the nation. In 2018, Queen Léonore died at the age of 52 of throat cancer, leaving the king a widower for the next six years
In politics, King Philippe has largely retained Beliany’s neutrality between its neighbors, though has taken steps to increase the goodwill and cooperation between Beliany and Riessany, signing with King Berengar of Riessany a free trade agreement at the Lailly Conference and conducting a state visit to Riessany in 2022. The agreement saw the Belian dollar and the Riessan rinette pegged to a set exchange rate and the removal of prohibitive tariffs.
In 2023 King Philippe began entertaining ideas of royal marriage between his son and a Teylandic princess, but negotiations ultimately fell through. On 10 August 2024 King Philippe celebrated the 10th Anniversary of his ascension to the throne. In late 2024 as part of the Belian-Riessan Alliance, an engagement was arranged between King Philippe and Lady Cecelia Pearson-Schuepp, a scion of the prestigious Pearson Dynasty and sister of Queen Arabella of Riessany, who tragically died that same year.
Philippe and Cecelia became engaged in September of 2024 and on January 4, 2025 they were officially married. The couple were first married this morning at the Beauporte City Hall in a civil ceremony before riding together in a state carriage to the cathedral where they were wed in a traditional religious ceremony. Numerous foreign royals, political figures and several Belian celebrities were in attendance of the royal wedding, as well as the King’s three children from his first marriage, King Berengar of Riessany along with his sons, the eldest of which Crown Prince Louis served as ring bearer and Lady Cecelia’s young cousin Countess Maike of Lailly served as flower girl.
King Philippe, who served in the Army as a young man, wore the uniform of the Colonel-in-Chief with a royal purple beret. Lady Cecelia wore a an sophisticated opulent dress with 3D lace flowers and transparent sequins scattered all over a long-sleeved sheer bodice and fitted crepe-chiffon skirt designed by Doffo Vascari, the Genoise high fashion designer. As many as 250,000 spectators were expected to line the streets, though the bitter cold weather of the winter seems to have lowered these numbers to closer to 120,000.
Following the wedding, the King and queen went on a tour of the kingdom before embarking onna month long honeymoon, with Crown Prince Jacques being appointed as regent for its duration.
In 2025, King Philippe and the Royal Court acknowledged Tærràdhiyà Dærràdsfrūa, Countess of Týrfer as an illegitimate child of the late King Baudouin. Tærràdhiya had been born in 2001 to Countess Þænnōrrà of Týrfer, a Thiran aristocrat known for her beauty and seductive charms. Countess Þænnōrrà had been apart of a delegation in the late 1990s that had arrived at the royal court and it became rumor that she was paramour of King Baudouin, who at this point was functionally separated from his wife Queen Sofia. The north of their daughter was kept secret, though was known by Princess Marie-Sofie, who sent the countess and her daughter back to Thiranaedh following King Baudouin’s fall down a set of palace steps left him confined to a wheelchair.
Countess Tærràdhiya made her first return to Beliany and public appearance at the king’s engagement party in 2024. After his marriage the king, though purportedly begrudgingly, acknowledged Tærràdhiya as his half-sister. She however was not granted any titles, rights or privileges in regards to the Belian monarchy.
Following his own marriage, King Philippe arranged the marriages of his eldest snd youngest children, Prince Jacques to Adelaide of Riessany and Prince Frederick “Rigo” of Royal Genes as part of the planned Triple Alliance. King Philippe attended the grand wedding of his son and heir in August of 2025. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Étienne Lavoisier, Archbishop of Beauporte, accompanied by the Cathedral Choir, whose ethereal performance of Ave Maria moved many to tears. Outside the cathedral, an estimated 75,000 well-wishers gathered along the Avenue Royale, waving the flags of Beliany and Riessany as the royal couple emerged for their first public appearance as husband and wife.
Around the same time, Queen Cecilia became pregnant. The Royal couple remained very quiet throughout the pregnancy, with the Queen stepping back almost entirely from public appearances while the new Crown Prince and Crown Princess instead took up much greater royals for public events. This earned the period a nickname as an unofficial regency, as while King Philippe continued to handle governmental affairs but was rarely seen outside official palace duties. The privacy of the royal couple lead to intensive speculation from the public and from the notorious Belian media, with many wondering if something was wrong with either the queen or the baby. When there was no grand formal presenting of the child when the due date in Spring of 2026, many assumed that the Queen had suffered a miscarriage.
This however was formally disputed by Crown Prince Jacques who sent out via royal placard that a baby boy had been born to Queen Cecilia on the 9th of May, 2026, though due to health concerns he and the mother remained under hospitalization. King Philippe during this time once again appointed Jacques to serve as Regent of Beliany while Philippe remained by his wife’s side. It was later announced that their son, named Loris Leopold, suffered from hypo-plastic left heart syndrome and ultimately underwent a heart transplant operation in October of that year. Afterwards the King and Queen and now six month old Prince Loris left the hospital and returned to the palace, upon which King Philippe retook up his public duties.
King Philippe, currently 55, looks to the future of his kingdom and dynasty, aided by his new young wife, Queen Cecelia, his closest and most loyal advisor, his sister Princess Marie-Sofie, with his heir Crown Prince Jacques, and his younger children, Prince Augustus, and Princess Stéphanie from his first marriage, and his new youngest children from his second marriage Prince Loris rounding out the present dynasty.

Hopefully we will have a lot of fun :)
We’ve had our periods of quiet, and I’ve had to step back from NS previously just cause work and moving, but Meillur is always seeming to chugging along throughout the years.
What would you like the other cities to be named? For the new map I want to include labels for more than just the capital.
Meillur
The Continent of Meillur comprises of two major landmasses, the mainland of Meillur, and to the south west the subcontinent of Jaria.
Earliest human civilization, as agreed upon by most experts in the field of anthropology began somewhere in the dense forests of the plains of modern day Derita, watered by the many rivers that flow from the Meilluran Alps that run north to south. It is on the banks of the Jinosi River that the Deritain people first arouse in ancient times. This was not a singular state, but a collection of various city states, kingdoms and polities that settled along the Jinosi, Ayo-Ifa and Saizon Rivers.
In ancient times as well arouse the Ptanets, the native peoples of Jaria. In Antiquity, during a period referred to by some as the Age of Princes, numerous Proto-Deritain groups sailed south and along the coast settling on islands, coastlines and most notably in various sections of the eastern coast of Jaria, where large ancient cities arose as centers of trade and commerce. For centuries the areas around the various straits and islands between Jaria and the mainland was the center of economic and geopolitical life.
Throughout the end of Antiquity and in the start of the early medieval era, new people groups arrived via ships sailing from the far east to seething along the continent, largely on the eastern shores, and in the frigid north. Here many new northern kingdoms arose with cultures of warfare, raiding and might along the Borean Sea. Other enclaves would form in western Jaria, and in the Liegallan plains west of the Saizon River. During this time period there were the rise of states like the Cubulyq Dynasty, the Duchy of Amaglione, and the Kingdom of Omiria. The Kingdoknof Mewan would be unified as an island in the 1400s under King Sunya Kattiya.
The early 1500s would see more kingdoms consolidate and solidify under a wave of increased royal authority throughout the continent with the formal establishment of the Kingdom of Derita in 1501, and the Kingdom of Lux Pulchrae in 1506.
Across the continent there would be various wars, rises and falls as nations slowly started to take shape. In the 1600s, the subcontinent of Jaria was consumed by the massive and brutal Great Jarian War. The Great Jarian War is considered to be the first in a series of ‘world wars’ in Meillur. In the wake of the terrors of the Great Jarian War would spring the Jarian Enlightenment, a period of intellectual and cultural movement spanning the late 17th through the 18th century (roughly 1685 to 1835) that emphasized reason, scientific empiricism, and individual liberty over tradition, blind faith, and absolute authority. These ideas formed numerous schools of thought, most notably Hospeanism, and the Enlightened Despot exemplified under rulers such as Edna the Great, the first Queen of Hospe which unified in 1720, and Rene the Great of Lejira.
The Celestial Empire was formed out of the kingdom of Derita in 1741 and would expand forming a vast inland empire, while the coastline was littered with unstable city states. Amongst the exceptions would be the Kingdom of Boguila, which expanded to conquer Shukomia, occupying the region for the next three centuries. The 19th Century would see the rise of naval expansion under the kingdoms of Primeva, Genes and Hospe competing with pirate fleets based out of Garandy. This naval arms race would lead to the colonization of Mewan under Primeva in the 1850s, whilst beginning in the 1860s, Hospe under Queen Valerie the Great would achieve naval dominance across the southern seas of Meillur and establishing numerious colonies. Her geopolitical position however would be constantly challenged and outwitted by the schemes and daring escapes of Queen Iolanda of Lejira.
This rise of militant imperialism would however peak in the Celestial Empire, where Azizi the Conqueror would rise to the Obsidian Throne. As emperor, he would launch the Meillureux Wars of 1896 to 1910 which would see him successfully conquer 3/4 of the continent. The Meillureux War proper, of 1896 to 1901 is considered the start of modern history in Meillur. His death in 1902 would however not bring peace but only more devastation and war as rebellions, revolts, and revolutions would break out across the country. This period would mark the rise of the House of Angeli in Lux Pulchrae. A rise in authoritarian rule would sweep over the continent.
In the aftermath of the carnage of wars, while Hospe dominated Jaria, a cold peace would be enforced in the continent mainland in the triumvirate of three rulers: Alara the Terrible, a bloody tyrant who would soak Meillur in the blood of her victims, with modern estimating her wars, executions, gulags and outright genocide claimed the lives of 80 million people over the course of her reign. Gitte the Magnificent, a distant peacekeeper who would attempt to police the world through numerous interventions, and political influencing, though he would over see the fall of the greatest extent of the Celestial Empire. Queen Adela of Genes, whose long reign would promote the rise of monarchism and dynastic authority across the continent, while building the most powerful economic force in Meillur, on the backs of a slave empire before its eventual abolition in the twilight of her rule.
In the 1940s, the dominance of these great powers would be challenged in the Second Great Jarian War in which Hospe would face opposition from a coalition of nations, as well as the revolt of numerious colonies, whilst on the mainland dynastic ambitions would cause civil and international strife and outbreaks of conflicts in the Great Game. In the aftermath of these struggles would see greater efforts for peace and international cooperation. In 1950 the Universal Human Rights Accords were written by Charlotte, Empress of Connuriste with the assistance of Eduardo Vangressa, Alexandre Hamolten and Ivan Innkevstigney, serving as a detailed law outlining of a declaration of the rights of all of mankind in Meillur
In 1952, the Kingdom of Beliany would be unified and form, with the Coudenberg Dynasty coming to power in 1955. A decade later the Queendom of Fynmark would emerge as a unified state in 1965. Economic instability and a great depression would strike the continent, plunging it into an unprecedented crisis. Isolationist polices would grip nations as international travel lessened and many states adopted autakary in attempts of self reliance in the Great Collapse of the 1970s, with international relations reaching an all time low. Amidst these cooling of tensions, Mewan regained its independence in 1999 as an independent kingdom once again.
In the dawn of the 21st Century, the cold peace that had followed the crises of the Gtrst Collapse would thaw into a new period of interconnectivity, economically, culturally and politically. In 2024, the Oligarchic Republic of Shukomia would at last gain its independence. This period would see the rise of imperfect democracies, and diplomatic relations and new ties being established.
