The DSA is considering joining the potato alliance for N-Day

~ Official Government Post ~

Dear friends, just a few things from the Foreign Affairs Branch:

First of all, with a very firm final vote count of 20-1, we have voted to formally close our embassy with Futaba Aoi. (I never thought I'd write that sentence, honestly.) This embassy technically existed for over eight years, so it would be appropriate to dedicate a few words to the embassy or the region, especially if you have been around long enough to remember anything from it. Despite being here for four years, I don't personally recall activity with them, but it is remarkable and worth mentioning the sheer length of time that it was on the books, in any event!

Secondly, we are mere hours away from the completion of the embassy with New West Indies, which is great! As the region that absorbed Evergreen Conifer, it is good that we have retained connections with that community, despite their movement from Conifer to Evergreen Conifer to the New West Indies. I highly encourage everyone to introduce themselves and say hello when the embassy has been finished! Speaking of Evergreen Conifer...

And finally, this brings us to part two-of-three in our closure votes. Our new vote is to close the embassy with Evergreen Conifer, which is officially a defunct region that no longer operates. This has been requested several times by Turbeaux, and has been agreed upon by other nations as well, two examples of which are here:

Turbeaux wrote:I would like to propose closure of our embassy with Evergreen Conifer regardless of what happens with the NWI vote as I have been told by ex-government officials that it is a dead region.

Mount Seymour wrote:As one of those "older nations" who's expressed reservations about closing embassies before: I have no problem with closing the embassy with Evergreen Conifer immediately, since we're likely to still have relations with their community through New West Indies. I have no problem with closing the embassy with Futaba Aoi either, provided we organize an appropriately respectful "funeral ceremony" for it in recognition of 8+ years of ties.

On their RMB page, Evergreen Conifer officially folded over 120 days ago and merged via treaty with New West Indies. So...yeah. As usual, the poll will be up for three days, requires a two-thirds majority to pass, and is open to native residents. I don't normally "take an official position" on any vote, because it's somewhat unbecoming in my mind, but with the current vote on Evergreen Conifer and the upcoming one on The Federation of Anarchist Communes, the regions are both de facto and de jure closed and finished, so I will be voting "yes" as soon as the poll is published.

After this, we will do Mozworld's proposal to close The Federation of Anarchist Communes (another formally closed region), and I think that's a wrap!

--------

On the World Assembly front, I have voted for the Restrictions of Forced Eugenics, along with 87% of Forest voters (as of this writing), and I have approved the following proposals: Land Reclamation Regulation, Anti-Whaling Act, Marine Protection Act, and Ensuring Effectual Recycling (probably could be "effective", not "effectual," but that's immaterial).

I'd love to have a discussion around WA issues as they come up, and I'm always happy for your input, recommendations, etc!!

Anyway, I hope that everyone is doing well IRL!
*manic grin* *the more good government in Forest, the more the world is okay and not on fire!!!* hehe... *stares at the floor*

The Rewilding of Ruinenlust

A year late but I finished my second book:

Drawing inspiration from the Book of Revelations and post apocalyptic mythology, Metallic Sky is the First of the Five Part Series, Days of Disaster. The world is in turmoil, as it is forced by the machinations of rogue nations China and Russia to deal with the phenomenon known as the Kessler Syndrome. World War 3 erupts as China, Russia and a number of satellite nations seek to turn a world disaster into conquest of long held ambitions in Europe and Asia.

“A few years have passed and where there were once only two thousand satellites revolving around the planet, now there are over 10,000 such orbitals. Private businesses have been quick to take advantage of the benefits these technological wonders offer and have quickly supplanted governments in the race for space among the stars. Amid rising global tensions two nations, China and Russia lead a bevy of others, seeking to take advantage of the discord of the West to realize long anticipated goals by leveling the military and economic playing field dominated by the United States and its allies. This ends up resulting in a global conflict, World War 3.

Using the imminent launch of Taiwan’s first spacecraft, the Chinese fashion a strategy to increase its regional hegemony and enlist the aid of another outsider nipping at the heels of the western nations atop the global food chain. The subsequent debris resulting from the satellite’s destruction cause a kaleidoscope of collisions rendering the satellite network extinct overnight. The chain reaction of events on the ground mirrored that of near space, and though slower to ensue was far more devastating to the way of life of people and the governments that led them threatening the very means of survival for both.”

Would this happen? Could this happen? How would the world react if it did? This sci-fi thriller explores the possibilities of a sudden, violent end to a world gifted with satellites and what happens in a world already on the brink of turmoil on the ground. Could this result in World War 3? What would happen to everyday people at home and abroad?

Thalassia Dissolves Government and Constitution, Forms Interim Council

Regional founder of Thalassia Sho, alongside Prime Minister Arenado and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wymondham1, dissolved the Thalassian government and constitution, forming an interim council, after making a statement last week. They stated that were systemic problems with the current system of government, and that government activity within the region has been through only a small handful of nations, them included. An interim constitution was signed without a vote, with the intent of the council being to create and pass a completely new constitution for the region. Roleplay events are being continued throughout this, the RMB rules are still in effect but the region has been password-protected.
Minor News
  • Lorania recently held a referendum on adopting WA citizenship, which passed. Prime Minister Stolkland resigned leaving Sail Nation (the editor of this) to continue as sole PM.

  • An election appears to have been rigged in the Confederation of Corrupt Dictators, although given how much that region 'blurs' the line between roleplay and gameplay, we currently do not understand whether this was planned or if it actually happened. Details are hard to understand whether they are in-character or out-of-character. A more analytical article about this or possibly how the line between OOC and IC is becoming blurred in general may be featured in a future issue of the NS chronicle.

Thalassia is a relatively young region for it's size, having been founded only a year ago as of writing this. Many of it's residents came from Pacifica, which is effectively Thalassia's predecessor, a region which had a troubled past, culminating in the regional founder CTEing and a move to Thalassia. Pacifica's founder has since returned to the game. Thalassia is generally a roleplay-based region, but has two elected offices, a regional government, and the idea of a legislature was debated in the past, and the creation of such is promised to be in the new constitution. Amendments to the constitution can be written by citizens and voted on by the WA members of the region, but this was only done by few individuals, which was a key point in the creation of the council.

The reaction to this decision has been mixed both inside and outside of the region. Some believe that reform was seriously needed, and that it couldn't be done with the current system of government, so a brief period of reorganization is needed. On the other hand, there is a case for believing that this move was sudden, undemocratic and that it gave power to the few already in government, rather than the citizens of Thalassia. Some even go as far to call it an oligarchy or even a coup. For now, only time will tell and the NationStates Chronicle will keep posting updates in each issue🟥

Long-term delegate of Forest, Ransium, steps down

Ransium, delegate of Forest for over 13 years, steps down from the position. Ransium is a long-time NSer the nation going back to Antiquity, which is before nation founding dates were even recorded. Many NS players haven't even been alive in real life that long, and some players who were born just after Ransium started their delegacy, are even allowed to legally use the NS forums now! That just goes to show the amount of time Ransium has been on NS. During that time, Ransium has written multiple WA resolutions, issues and joined the issues editing and game moderation team. Ransium has also been commended by the security council, an honour very few players get to receive.

Unlike most regions, Forest's constitution states that the position of delegate is chosen by the Forest Keeper. With the approval of Ransium and regional founder Errinundera, Forest Keeper Verdant Haven chose Foreign Affairs branch head and long-time Forest resident Ruinenlust to become the new WA delegate.

This moment is a relatively rare one in NS considering the length of the delegacy, one of the longest in NS history. It almost seems like a 'passing on the baton' moment, when a player whose helped build a region alongside their own reputation on NS, steps down and allows a newer, yet experienced player take over. While the mood in Forest has a twinge of sadness, there seems to be some celebration of Ransium's time as delegate, and congratulations on Ruinenlust's appointment. The NS chronicle wishes Ransium well on their continuing journey both inside and out of NS, and for Ruinenlust's time ahead as Forest's delegate

The never-ending R/D war wages on, this time in the technical forum!

NS is forever in a 'war' between raiders, who will violently take over regions, and defenders, who will respond by attempting to liberate those regions, sometimes through SC resolutions, but usually by sending as many WA nations at the raided region as possible to endorse the 'rightful' delegate, with only seconds before the region updates and the delegacy is safe for the next 12 hours. Both raids and liberations are dependent on strategy and fast reactions from both sides, alongside playing the game like no one ever thought would be possible.

During the recent raid on South Pacific (not to be confused with the South Pacific, which is much larger and a feeder region), The Black Hawks used a tacic usually used by defenders called 'update-bending' which distorts the time a region is updated by flooding regions that update just before the target region with thousands of puppets. This was used by TBH to prevent what was the largest liberation attempt in NS history, two updates in a row, by flooding a region with puppets, which meant that when the defenders moved in to South Pacific, they could easily eject them. The raiders eventually won this occupation, declaring victory after occupying the region for several days.

Several defenders, notably Roavin, took to the Technical forum to complain about this newly-found imbalance. Things became very difficult to understand for the average non R/D focused player, so I won't explain the discussion here to you, but basically the site admin decided against making significant changes to the mechanics that allow this to happen, but did make some suggestions about how defenders could utilize current mechanics in their favour, although they could be difficult to pull off. The NationStates Chronicle would like to remind readers that the NS mods are generally unbiased in terms of picking sides in R/D gameplay, aside from a few exceptions, for example forum mod Jakker is a high-ranking TBH official.

This hasn't been the only suggestion though, current WA Sec-Gen and delegate of defender region 10000 Islands, Kuriko, although not involved in R/D themselves, suggested that regional founders could appoint a successor nation, which would become founder if the old founder ceases to exist. This would possibly benefit defenders, as although it wouldn't affect occupations directly, it would seriously decrease the amount of regions that could be raided. This modification was deemed to be too big and could affect R/D too much for it to be implemented. Previously mentioned forum moderator and member of The Black Hawks, Jakker, proposed a 'Feeder Warzone'. Basically, it means that one extra feeder region would be added, but this would also be a warzone (a region where influence doesn't exist, but where bans are also temporary). This region would also be the last to update, making it a great 'jump point' for raiders and defenders alike. As raiders have more usable pilers then defenders, therefore having a numerical advantage, it might be easier for them to hold on to this region then defenders. As ever in R/D gameplay, it wouldn't be surprising if this ends in a stalemate🟥

BREAKING NEWS: Occupation attempt on Calefacta Aquas Piscinae fails as founder suddenly returns

Shortly before this issue was finished and ready to go to press, an occupation by the Europeian Republican Navy was abruptly ended as regional founder Torocabob refounded only 1 day into the occupation. The occupation was a join effort between multiple raiding and independent regions. The founder returned shortly after the minor update on the day of this issue's publication, then promptly removed executive control from the delegate. In a last-ditch attempt to retain control, the raider delegate ejected and banned the founder from the region, although this practically did nothing. Raiders have been seen to be returning to their respective regions and the occupation is now effectively over. Before this turn of events, the occupation was going to be a minor news story, but this surprise end has made this news major enough to be included. Regional rebuilding is expected to begin shortly🟥

I think that we should create an embassy with The Black Hawks.

Forest is and has always been neutral in the R/D war (except for when it comes to fighting racist/fascist regions), so we can’t have an embassy with them, unless we also formed an embassy with a big defender region too. Perhaps we can form an embassy with the Mariner Trench, which is known for raiding fascist/Nazi regions and defending and liberating other regions that have been raided by fascist/Nazi regions?

It would be unnecessarily tying our own hands to mandate that we have to build an embassy with a defender region for every raider region or vice-versa, just to stay neutral. Reminds me of the US before the Civil War, admitting slave or free territories in a precarious balancing act.

Instead, we should just feel free to form embassies with any region that looks like a good partner. ^_^

I missed Ransium stepping down.

It feels like someone just kicked me really, really hard in the status quo-organ, and I didn't enjoy it.

It reminds me of this really, really comfy sofa I used to have. It was a beautiful thing, scruffy but smart at the same time, and it rested peacefully in my living room for years. I loved it to bits, and the best part was that it wrote all of these United Nations resolutions and a solved a bunch of issues that all combined to immeasurably improve the world around us to boot, but eventually DFS had a sale on and I had to say goodbye to it. Five days before I realised that DFS even had a sale on in the first place.

The new sofa from their Ruinenlust range seemed like a worthy successor, but I had to sit on it for a while before I was sure.

I'll confess to the analogy running away from me fairly close to the beginning there; I was trying to say "thanks Ransium, good luck Ruinenlust!"

I think you could class 10000 Islands as a large defender region with their TITO defender organisation also one of our officers is also an officer with the Black Hawks (Lord/Lady Dominator) and many raider nations are hiding out here in the Forest so if we are all inclusive why not an Embassy with The Black Hawks

Also my guess is Forest as in other years is about to be swamped with raider puppets to help out with N and Z day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

To plant an Acorn
Announcing Embassies and Nuclear Collaboration with Forest

Dear readers, may you be New West Indian, Forester, or simply curious,

It is a great pleasure and honour to announce that, following a landslide poll in Forest and acceptance by the Department of Foreign Affairs, an embassy will be opened between Forest and the New West Indies. The Embassy will hopefully mark the beginning of a close partnership between our two regions.

Forest is the kind of region about which one can only offer praise. They are a large but tight-knit and compassionate community; they uphold principles of democracy and equality between nations. Most of all, they have had previous contacts with Evergreen Conifer, and have shown particular interest in the well being of the Coniferan community here. This is a region that has shown that it cares for those it calls its friends, even when they are outside their borders.

This would have never been possible without the hard work of Turbeaux/Green Bowers, known here as Forest Breeze, who has been particularly supportive of the embassy, and was of invaluable help in furthering the NWI's candidacy. It fills me with joy that they accepted to represent Forest here, and it is without hesitation that I receive their credentials to be the Ambassador of Forest to the New West Indies.

In the New West Indies, the Honourable Secretary of Foreign Affairs Funky Goats deserves to be called an architect of this partnership, having dialogued with Forester representatives and shown leadership in the Coniferan Remnant community by collecting the thoughts of fellow Coniferans on the embassy with Forest. Make sure to gift a shrub to our favourite goat next time you stumble upon them in the lush meadows of the Indies!

To serve as our Ambassador to Forest, it made the most sense to appoint a former Coniferan with knowledge and understanding of Evergreen Conifer's positions, and someone who understands the value of Culture in a partnership. Central ninjago city, a Co-Founder of Evergreen Conifer and a former Minister of Culture there, stands as an obvious choice. On the advice of Secretary Funky Goats, I am proud to accredit Central Ninjago City (also known as Craei Theau) as the Ambassador of the New West Indies to Forest.

I will also take this occasion to congratulate Ruinenlust for ascending to Forest's delegacy. It is a secret to nobody that Ransium left a particularly large pair of shoes to fill. Ruinenlust is, by all measures, one of the most capable individuals to fill it, and their long time commitment to Forest, coupled with their diplomatic skill and experience, makes them likely to be a great successor to Ransium. On the behalf of the entirety of the New West Indies, the Office of the Secretary-General wishes Ruinenlust and Forest a prosperous and constructive time at the Delegacy.

Citizens of our two regions will very soon be able to see the benefits of this friendship. Mount Seymour/Somyrion was generous enough to invite the New West Indies to join The Potato Alliance at the next N-Day5 event. N-Day is a Nationstates event that involves a nuclear war, where regions can team up and either protect each other, bomb each other to oblivion, and often both. To better understand what this impending Nuclear war is, check out these two dispatches:

page=dispatch/id=874170

page=dispatch/id=1422773

The Potato Alliance is a super-faction with many different nations from different friendly regions, from our friends in Forest to Spiritus to the North and South Pacifics. All are friends, and all are determined to make it to the first row of NS' ranking. While you will all get more information very soon, reading the above dispatch will already give you an idea of what will be happening in late September.

With that, I hope you will join me in congratulating the new ambassadors and celebrating the establishment of Embassies with this cultural and environmental powerhouse, but also a adorable patch of green in the multiverse that is Forest!

Additionally, I would like to welcome Central ninjago city as their ambassador to Forest. They served in EC's government (in the roles of co-founder and Minister of Culture) as Craei theau, so they are already familiar with us.

This may be overdue, nevertheless thank you Ransium for the many years in which you have served as Forest's WA Delegate. No doubt your successor has big shoes to fill. That being said, Ruinenlust congratulations on your selection as Forest's WA Delegate.

No idea. But perhaps we can deduce some things.

Their last RMB post was 71 days ago and they CTEd 21 days ago, so there isn't time for them to have CTEd during vacation mode. So their last login must've been 49 days ago. That's a 22 day gap where they were still around but didn't post anything, and before which they were still fairly engaged (going so far as to create a new despatch a week earlier).

It could just be something as simple as being busy, as 70 days ago here in the UK non-essential shops were able to reopen, but the post below makes me concerned that maybe a family member contracted covid.

Uan aa Boa wrote:And so begins week two of combining work from home with school from home. It would actually be the school holidays now if things were normal but we're carrying on with some light and as fun as possible educational stuff for at least a couple of hours a day. The Destroyer of Worlds doesn't seem to mind more than she minds everything in these increasingly hormonal times, and she's not overburdened with other things to do.

The charity I work for is still doing stuff, albeit not face to face, but given my largely administrative role I can work from home. This is probably wise as our daughter has a congenital respiratory condition, but after much agonising my partner is carrying on with her NHS job. We were watching the news with doctors from around Italy and the surrounding countries heading to Lombardy to volunteer on the front line despite hundreds of healthcare staff having caught the virus. It doesn't seem the time to jump ship. There's no definitive information on the likely effect of the virus on The Destroyer of World's condition, but a couple of weeks before lockdown she brought home a medal from a regional cross country championship, so we have to trust in the fact that she's pretty healthy.

As a family we're relatively fortunate since we're both likely to continue getting paid throughout the crisis, which is certainly not the case for many in a community whose main source of income is tourism. The UK government is offering to pay 80% of the salary of workers who are put on hold rather than laid off, but the application process isn't live yet and no payments will come through until May. Few employers are buying into this. You need cash flow, trust in the government and goodwill towards your employees and not many have all three of those. At work we're affiliated to a local food bank and demand has rocketed.

We're also fortunate that our house backs onto open moorland with trees and a stream running down to the rocky shore, giving us space to roam with social distancing.

The working day finishes with calls round a list of isolated service users to see how everyone's holding up. The penultimate person reminds me that in 1945 she was a child in Hamburg and asks if I think she's frightened now. It's a fair point. The final one tells me that my colleagues and I are all angels. I have a definite feeling I've mislaid my harp.

While we're on the topic of individual nations CTEing and stepping down and all that, I miss Mcclandia. I think he had an alt after he got deleted for flaming on the Forest board but he hasn't commented here in months and I'm pretty sure he either moved or got deleted again. I miss threatening his people with nuclear strikes.

Turbeaux wrote:I say that Ruinenlust is a Sofa King couch!

Forest as a whole is like that one nice couch in the department store full of couches that are nice but not really your thing, so you get the nice couch and bring it home and it's all you use for years and years.

I dunno. I find Forest's community to be at the perfect pace for me to participate in while not feeling left behind in a slew of other RMB messages or watching as the region slowly dies out as everyone moves on to the bigger regions.
