Meanwhile on my "tiny" part of the globe:

Dutch broadcaster NOS reported Friday that Prime Minister Mark Rutte's government is stepping down after it emerged that officials had wrongly pursued thousands of people over welfare fraud.

Rutte called a Cabinet meeting in The Hague where ministers had to make up their minds on quitting just two months before a planned general election.

What is the scandal about?
The Dutch tax office had accused thousands of families of fraudulently claiming child welfare payments between 2013 and 2019. It demanded repayments of tens of thousands of euros, driving many families into financial ruin and, in some cases, divorce.

A parliamentary report called it an "unprecedented injustice" to claw back tens of thousands of euros without giving the accused a chance to prove their innocence.

Rutte, who has been prime minister since 2010, described the episode as "shameful."

What have the political consequences been so far?
Green leader Jesse Klaver took to Twitter on Friday to welcome the resignation as the "right decision" for the Netherlands.

"Let this be a new beginning. A turning point," he wrote, saying this could be "the moment when we rebuild our welfare state."

EDIT: This is what happens when people become "files", "cases" and "numbers" and the people in power and the ones overlooking "the system" ignore several signals that things are not functioning properly.

Oof, sorry to hear of that going on, Ownzone. At least they have the dignity to step down from office when they get caught doing something horrible, but obviously it should never come to that. How high up the government chain did the issue go? Was it actually a cabinet-level minister, or ministers, who were driving the pursuit of these families?

The indignity people express at the possibility of a poor family getting something extra, while they pay no attention to fantastically wealthy individuals skipping out on millions in taxes, never ceases to amaze me. Like... I do fundamentally believe in many aspects of aspects of capitalist society, including the ability of people to become wealthy, but that only works when everybody is playing by the same rules and is given a decent chance at having a good starting point. Going after a hundred poor families, even if every case were real, will never do as much for the coffers as pursuing a single high-wealth individual engaged in the same tactic. They want to stop fraud? Set the example at the top so people don't think that's what they have to emulate to achieve success.

The problem is a bit more complicated than this. First the "fraud" was in general not committed by the families but by childminder agencies. However since it was legally almost impossible to convict those and most of those were closed down anyway the tax office directed by the government decided to go after the families. Second after the "Bulgarian Fraud" (A large number of Bulgarians wilfully moved to The Netherlands claimed and received a number of allowances and moved back to Bulgaria before our tax office could figure out they weren't entitled to the received allowances) the tax office was encouraged by both our legal system and the government to use a zero tolerance-policy when it came to potential fraud. Any mistake in a signed document was considered to be deliberate and labelled the person responsible as "fraudulent" which resulted in a) the received allowance had to be paid back in its entirety including hefty fines and b) makes it harder if not impossible to make use of certain financial services like getting a loan or a mortgage. Pushing these people deeper and deeper into financial troubles.

Employees of the tax office and several members of the Dutch parliament asked the Cabinet on multiple occasions to look into the problems and to come up with a hardship clause (which strangely enough wasn't part of the initial law to begin with). The concerns were dismissed and parliament was assured that the law and implementation of it was working "as intended"

Meanwhile Dutch and foreign investors and banks cut deals with our tax office on the regular when they are found guilty of actual fraud. But no deals were possible for the "people in the street".

EDIT: Stepping down is merely symbolic as the Cabinet (excluding the person responsible for the tax office) will remain in function in a demissionary capacity. Nonetheless the fact that the conclusion was reached that the government as a whole (that includes the legislative, judicial and executive branches) failed to protect these citizens and the fact that it has consequences is kind of sad but also reassuring at the same time. Seeing that many states move closer and closer to becoming totalitarian states I am glad to see the checks and balances over here are still working (albeit shamefully late!!!)

Gaaah I love my cat so much!
This is completely unrelated to anything but I just want to make a my-cat-appreciation-post. How many people can say they have a cat who has a music taste? She literally complains when I put eletronic music on until I turn it off but comes closer when I play jazz or anything with an acoustic guitar. Freaking love that elderly chonky kitty to death.

Real, I believe. EDIT: Definitely true. I have found it verified in the Guardian and the BBC, along with several other Dutch newspapers.

The water can become toxic, and it—along with antibiotics, pesticides, parasites, and feces—is spread to surrounding areas, contaminating our oceans. Wild fish populations can get sick and die when parasites and chemicals are spread to them from these farms through the water. According to a study, a 2-acre fish farm can produce as much waste as a town of 10,000 people.

AQUAFARMING LEADS TO MORE FISHING: Not only does aquafarming create massive amounts of waste, it also contributes to MORE industrial fishing. This is because many of the fish raised on these farms are predators, meaning they need to eat smaller fish to live. Billions of wild fish need to be caught in order to feed these farmed species. For example, it takes five pounds of ocean fish to produce just one pound of farmed salmon."

So don't know about that. I'm a meat eater myself, but try to cut it down a bit and I also have some problems with some foods so not sure if I could leave meat to stay fairly healthy.

Have any of you watched WandaVision yet? I just finished the first two episodes after GroupWatching it with 4 friends and some relatives, and it was soooo good. The first episode has a Dick van Dyke show vibe a lot, and the second episode is very much Bewitched. Already it’s so cool, with SWORD being teased and Monica Rambeau appearing but being weird and Agnes (or Agatha Harkenss perhaps) being nosy and funny. It’s so good I am gushing

Oh wow. I did not know this. So clearly Wildcaught is better than Farmed.

However, I am pretty sure that Aquaculture (where they are raised in aquariums/tanks on land in a completely controlled environment) is also eco-friendly. Granted, I am not an expert on this, but I know that many articles about eco-friendliness have pushed it.

And I know that Aquaculture and Farmed Fish are often confused, but what I mean when saying it is where fish (or aquatic animals or plants) are farmed in tanks on land, using perfectly climate-controlled, salt-controlled, etc environments, and where any waste is cleaned and cycled back into the system to avoid waste.

Ecology is a very difficult subject. We, as humans need to use nature in order to live (obviously) but also take care of it in order to have more in the future. It is sad that most people don't understand that. Like a Greek saying: "Whatever we eat, drink and whatever get in the ass", meaning "party now and don't care for tomorrow".

On the bright side, we will enter the fourth-to-last day of Trump's presidency as of noon EST. The relief of simply having him out of office is going to be such a breath of fresh air. It's not going to magically fall into place, but I am cautiously optimistic that things might ending up turning a corner, from the vantage point of two or three years down the road. I am hopeful that the Nov. 3rd - Jan. 20th period (and specifically from the sixth) will be seen as the nadir of this dark chapter in American history. It's not going to be the end of LotR or some grand resolution to the chaos and gratuitous harm of the past few years, but it will make the wind start blowing in a different direction, so to speak.

Welcome to MBBC, I’m Dido Itobaal-Azmelqart. Today we begin with news of an outbreak, but not the one you may think. MBBC Reporter Mustafa Kemal Bayram, reports live from the Wine Country.

“Thank you Ms. Azmelqart” (a woman faintly yelling that it’s Itobaal-Azmelqart can be heard in the background). “An E. Coli outbreak broke out in Middle Barael starting on Tuesday, following the news that Ajmimi Water, domestically known as Majmi Filtered Water, had found the bacteria within their water. Ajmimi, which provides the water used to make the beverages Bepis, SPIT, and Eckie-Cola in the area, has apologized and is working hard to contain the spread of the bacteria. Meanwhile, pro-tap water activists have started a guerilla campaign against Ajmimi by spreading news of the E. Coli and by hosing random Ajmimi executives in the streets. Sorry Dido, I’ll have to go now to avoid being sprayed in my faux-pumaskin suit.”

“Thank you, Mustafa. This news comes a little over a week after the dead body of Frieden-und Freudenlander scientist Dr. Hausenbergerdorff was discovered in the Cothon in Cothon City. The entire port has been closed for a week, with no ships entering or leaving, which has severely impacted many business within Cothon City and Middle Barael as a whole which depends so much on foreign trade. Due to the E. Coli outbreak, the investigation into Dr. Hausenbergerdorff’s murder has been delayed, and meanwhile the Frieden-und Freudenlander journalist Katja Mikkunen has still not been found, and the Cothon still remains completely closed, with no one allowed to enter or leave, which has hit many businesses in the city hard. Both were investigating the mysterious metal monoliths being found around Frieden-und Freudenland. If you have any news regarding either of these cases, please do not hesitate to contact Detective Lilleström of FuF using her social media, though keep in mind that she has quit Twitter recently due to it’s toxicity and the inability to form an intelligent argument with just 140 characters, and as such her Twitter account is inactive. This is the end of our show, now we will go on to our international news segment.

Thank you, Ms. Itobaal-Azmelqart. I’m Adriana D’Este, reporting live from our studio in central Scania.

This evening we have received important news from neighboring Mowte. The Supreme Leader of Mowte, Dick Tator, apparently suffered a major fall and hit his head, as per the Senior Postmortem Agency of Medicine (SPAM) and the Twitter of the Office of our Acclaimed Dictator (TOAD). According to SPAM, he suffered this fall almost a month and a half ago, while the TOAD initially said that it was just yesterday and then later admitted to hiding the information until now. However, both SPAM and the TOAD insist that while he hit his head, he has suffered little to no brain damage due to, and I quote, “the Supreme Leader’s Glorious Holy Spirit and Courage, which he channels to save our Glorious nation from the wretched evil of so-called ‘progressivism’, which is really just a group of anti-progress anarchist international-despots who are trying to establish a Marxist, Liberalist NWO”. The SPAM claims that in fact the only change in Dick Tator’s behavior is that previously his foreign policy was notably isolationist and anti-foreigner, being a notable hermit nation that only ever cooperated with Middle Barael and Malah, but following his injury he has become notably interventionist, announcing the beginning of an espionage and misinformation “war on these SJWs with their ********”. However, very little of any evidence suggests that Mowte is even remotely capable of carrying out any sort of spy attack, and they barely even seem to be trying, with the only crime being linked to them is the sale of expensive glass and metal mined in the Desert of Mowte to Black-Market metal dealers in Lord Dominator, but this seems only to be a desperate attempt to gain money for the sanctioned and cash-strapped hermit nation.

“Next up, we will be talking about the vicious riots at the United States Capital. Here to join me are three experts on American Studies, Dr. Emilia Pershing, Professor Ilan Gavi, and Vícenç Sertsayu Mighayel Bartoli. Let’s start off by raising the obvious question — do you hold President Trump personally responsible for this riot?”

“Oh absolutely, not a doubt—“

Same Day

“Captain Schurke, it’s been over a week and a half already. What should we do with Mikkie here?” says the junkie sailor, who was surprisingly sober (though this is only because he used up his whole stash and the Cothon was still closed).

“I’ve told you bud, I got a guy in the inside who’s willing to take her and hide her, some politician. He’s payin’ me good money, and he’s got contacts who are willing to smuggle her out to Mowte to be dealt with.”
“But sir, they’re not letting anyone leave the port. This whole Ebola crisis or whatever—“
“E Coli”
“Yeah, that’s what I said, anyway this whole crisis is delaying the investigation, not to mention all of the COVID restrictions... already our shipments of Crispy Fried Tofu and soda from back home in Turbeaux—“
“Don’t mention that name around me, boy. You know how I hate those liberal snowflakes!”
“Sir, ok, but the Crispy Fried Tofu and soda are both already too old to go to market, they’re not letting us bring in the Aumeltopian SPIT because their Middle Barael branch used Ebola—“
“E Coli!”
“Because the MB branch of SPIT used E Coli water, even though our SPIT is being produced in Mount Seymour and Somyrion and Aumeltopia, not in MB. But anyways when are you gonna give it up, sir? We’ve been at this too long, I never signed up to be a criminal, heck I’m not even a conservative!”
“You’re not?! Well then you’re fired!”
“Wait what! You can’t fire someone off of their political beliefs! If you fire me I’ll tell the whole world how you kidnapped Katja!”
“You’re the one who lured her onto the ship with your ‘charming’ personality!”
“Yeah but only after you told me to! And besides you’re the one who sent her the anonymous letter telling her to investigate our ship! Anyways I’m not afraid of going to jail, I’m leaving and taking Katja with me.”

Captain Schurke goes on to the Bonny Star’s PA system. “Attention men, none of you may leave this ship under my orders, and anyone caught doing so will be thrown in there with Katja.”

“Now Then”, he says to the junkie. “Where were we?”...

Being a Dutch guy (although I'm not currently living in the Netherlands) I confirm that this is real. I agree with the PM's wording that the affair is 'shameful'. The government stepping down is mostly symbolic though imho, as there will be general elections in two months and opinion polls so far indicate that the same political parties that currently make up the goverment may be able to continue their coalition.

It is indeed shame for the Netherlands and Europe in general. Political values are in crisis lately, and the general rule says that everything happens in America, comes to Europe as domino effect. I just wish for strenght, patience and rational thouhgts, not fanatism.

If the nation cte'd before the card game started then you cant get their card. There is yet to be a search feature for cards, so you may be out of luck.

You’d have to ask FuF, but I know they have been pretty busy with schoolwork so they’re trying to finish up the Saga. Also, i guess it’s more like a creative writing thing than an actual RP. And I don’t know what you mean by wine, this Saga has virtually nothing to do with Wine, and I’d advise for any of you curious about it to read it from the beginning, starting with FuF’s posts about the Metal Monoliths in their nation a month or so ago
