The Background Story
It was the year 2022. Due to infighting, weak leadership, and economic troubles, the United States of America went into a depression. It was just a shadow of its former glory, and was increasingly vulnerable.

Then the time came.

China and Russia, both longtime archenemies of the USA, declared war. The US tried its best, to no avail. Its military was able to hold up for some time, but the economy meant a lack of resources. It was America’s most crushing and last defeat. In the Treaty of New York, Russia was able to annex Alaska, and China set up Hawaii as a puppet. But most importantly, the 48 contiguous states were no longer a Union. The United States of America was disbanded.

Now a bunch of separate nation-states, the Mainland 48 rebuilt over the years. All of them were able to sustain themselves economically. Political systems learned from American failure and strived for strong leadership. Some took it too far, setting up stratocracies and absolute monarchies. But what they all longed for was the chance to be great again. There was no hope in reuniting America—it would just fall again, and consequences would be worse.

It’s your decision. You get to play as one of the former American states. Expand and colonize. Fight wars across the world. Put America under your state’s name.

You could choose Texas. It’s in a pretty good spot. It’s not surrounded at the South. Or you can choose California. Over the years, it’s now a tech giant like it used to be. Culture there thrives. Maryland and Virginia both have an especially strong longing to be a world power, as they housed the capital of the USA. Unite them, and you could get a high-morale, determined militia.

But beware of the 2 states that are non-contiguous. Alaska is under Russian control. You could request help from Canada or one of the States to overthrow them in a war. And Hawaii is a puppet of China. It is indirectly controlled, but mess with it and you could have the Chinese navy speeding toward you. Taking Hawaii would be a legendary naval campaign.

Don’t forget about the rest of the world. Decide if your state is still in NATO. Determine your friends and enemies in other continents—especially Europe. They tend to have a lot of influence.
