Well, gun deaths doesn't discriminate for suicide or defensive use of a firearm, which I don't think accurately reflects the degree to which guns are used to commit violence against others. The FBI and CDC at least have data that account specifically for murder/homicide with a firearm.
But yes, if one is to believe their data, which I don't think should simply be dismissed out of hand (although some skepticism might be appropriate), it's apparent that there are a hand full of perennial outliers, which skew the data more for red states. By contrast, at the bottom of the list, red and blue states are fairly evenly intermingled. However, it should also be recognized that states with more of a gun culture are not always red. Vermont and New Hampshire come to mind as blue states with high firearm ownership that are way down on the list.
Another issue I've heard commented on is that when one removes the blue cities from the red states, the murder rate from firearms falls. Third Way has a study that sort of addresses this, but it looks to me like a bait and switch. Their methodology was to remove the county of the largest city from the analysis, but this doesn't necessarily mean that these cities are Democrat led. Take for instance Alabama, where the researchers removed the county containing Huntsville, which has (and had since at least 2008) a Republican mayor, while conversely, the researchers removed Nashville in Tennessee, but allowed Memphis to remain. With this in mind, the analysis clearly does not plausibly control for party affiliation at the county level so as to refute the pro-Republican claim. Perhaps it would be interesting to control for county rather than state (which appears feasible with CDC data), if one wished to compare the homicide rate with firearms to the political affiliation. But for now, that's more work than I've bargained for.

The polls have been stagnant for years. I know because I have family in Eire and I have been following them. The outraged people you see are completely marginal.
For fast, The Quartering is near the top, but that's not always for the best. As it is, the Lotus Eaters frequently are on breaking news within 24 hours, which is pretty good for around 30 minutes of coverage and commentary on a subject.
PJW is good. The Lotus Eaters are excellent on most things. I'm kind of all over the place in the right wing to voluntaryist news space, although my breadth of platforms could use some work. But I don't have enough time in the day. I already need to spend more time disconnected from the news, and use that to pursue my actual interests, sharpen my skills, and prepare for advancing life plans.
I can understand the desire to avoid a mentality they think may bring back the Troubles, but I'm just perplexed by their complete non-reaction to being second class citizens in their own country. How does one reach the Irish people?
