The Empty Crown

“See, the fact of the matter is, is that when the Oakstar lineage took the crown of Țimora and therefore created the alternative order that is this heritage–well, I do say, that we are the last rightful claimants under traditional succession law, to the elven throne of the north,” intoned the Bishop of Ingaard, looking over at the Sword of the Emperor, Salan Erigath, a thin elf with a bent nose.

“But the treaty of 1961 nullified the state of the empire, and the lands were…or what remained, were dispersed,” replied Prince Doroginiț, the head of the treasury.

“He has a point, but so does the honourable bishop, however, the question of whether or not we can consider ourselves the legitimate successor state on the world stage remains in the hands of the global public,” replied Salan.

“Speaking of the emperor, where is he?” asked Prince Alkan, the head of the department of social services.

“He is running late, but only by virtue of his wife,” chuckled Salan.

The bishop gave a harrumph, “See, the matter here is, is that any claim to the northern throne would have to be backed by the Bishop of Keva, who is seen as the holder to the ‘keys of the throne’ by virtue of his predecessor having crowned the first emperor, Ayin I,”

“But what trifling matter is this, bishop? Whether or not the emperor accepts the proposal is a finer detail that has been overlooked,” replied Prince Dubronți, the head of the department of agriculture and industry.

“Ho, ho, you think that the emperor wouldn’t take the chance to retake the throne of the house Oakstar? The ancient throne?” asked the bishop.

“No, by no means, but I daren’t presume on the emperors behalf,” replied Dubronți.

“The prince Dubronți is right, bishop, now hear, the emperor is coming,” replied Salan, nodding towards the door, which opened to reveal the lithe figure of the emperor, his white elvish hair pinned back by a small coronet of silver. All stood as he swept past them to his seat at the head of the table.

“Gentlemen, am I to hear that you have yet to cease your mutterings about the throne of the north?” he asked calmly.

A few of those around the table looked down, ashamed.

“I..” began the bishop, only to be silenced by a wave of the emperor's hand, “Spare me, the details of your coup, only sit down and let us focus on more pertinent matters, namely, the piracy that has arisen in the White Sea, and the military coup in the north,”

They all sat down as the emperor remained standing, “I have spoken, with the Great Lords of the chapter, who have informed me, that the Solomonari are struggling to hold off on the magic of the pirates, who–for no reason other than divinitatus, have acquired various dark amulae and magicks which are of unknown providence,”

“Can we send soldiers?” asked Prince Dubronți.

“I asked that, actually, the great lords of the chapter informed me that such a move would be risky without adequate knowledge of what we are going up against,” replied the Emperor.

“We have dealt with the magicks, though,” intoned Salan.

“The magic of the northern elves, is different, and derived from nature itself, therefore, nature can combat it, this is derived from the soul…which is a forbidden nature of magic which requires the soul to be chained to a benefactor who then in return, gifts the powers to the recipient,” replied the emperor.

“Daemonae,” muttered the bishop, “I shall have to convene the bishops then, to begin looking into it, because if the Solomonari are unable to defeat this, then we might need more than our own powers,”

The prince Alkan gave a slight scoff, “Ah, yes, excorcisms,” he replied.

“There is nothing funny about that, Alkan,” replied the emperor, “Or shall I remind you that your mother was bound to a Daemonae,”

Alkan frowned and looked down. “My apologies,”

“In the meantime, a coup has occurred in Dorpat,” stated the Emperor, “The March 11th elections were a win for the conservative Renovācija movement, which bodes unwell if the generalissimo Von Pahlen decides to be…expansionist.”

“Precisely why we must claim the northern throne, your majesty,” intoned the bishop.

The emperor raised his hand, “And risk, a fourth global war?”

The bishop looked down in shame, “I meant not that, your majesty,”

“The northern throne was dissolved in 1961, all claims were renounced by the House Oakstar in 1962, to prevent our relatives from attempting to use this country as a jump-point for a renewed monarchist movement,” continued the Emperor.

“But with Dorpat sliding into a military junta under Von Pahlen, it would be right to at least prove a show of strength, after all, we are one of the last true elvish kingdoms of the Oakstar lineage,” replied Dubronți.

“That, will be deduced, once we deal with the pirates, meeting dismissed,”
