INTRODUCTION

Black Sails, White Sails is a naval combat game to be played in a text-based chat.
Combatants take turns maneuvering their sailing ships into range and firing their cannons in an attempt to sink the enemy vessels.
Two to four players are recommended, but any number of players may participate and even play in teams.
Fleet and battlefield size is only restricted by your imagination.

RULES

(I'm gonna throw some stuff in here as a placeholder. It'll be tidied up later.)

Players take turns and each turn includes three action points (AP) which may be used to move forward, turn the ship, fire upon the enemy, or other options to be detailed below.
Ships fire broadside so must be alongside an opponent to fire. A hit by cannons does one damage point and a ☠ will be placed next to the player's off-map ship tally for each point of damage taken. Standard ships can take five hits before they flounder and damage is recorded as the battle progresses . A floundering ship may not move but can still fire their cannons.
Surrendering is an option as a floundering ship may be evacuated, the crew saved, but a sixth hit will sink a ship and kill its crew.
A damaged ship may be repaired by dropping anchor next to a friendly fort and using AP to make repairs, one damage point being removed for every three action points spent, or one per turn.

BATTLES AT NIGHT

(Night encounters, or other conditions where the opponents may not be able see each other until they are close
will need to be refereed by a third, neutral party who will maintain the map secretly,
only showing the positions of the ships when they are within sight of each other or their forts.)

In an attempt to avoid the cannons at "the Pfalz", the White Sail ship encounters a Black Sail on night patrol.
The ship is damaged, the down-river current strong and the visibility poor; bad conditions for a battle.
Do you fight, or use the strong current to slip past the enemy and away into the darkness?

SCENARIOS

"Pfalzgrafenstein Castle functioned as a toll-collecting station that was not to be ignored. It worked in concert with Gutenfels Castle and the fortified town of Kaub on the right side of the river. Due to a dangerous cataract on the river's left, about a kilometer upstream, every vessel would have to use the fairway nearer to the right bank, thus floating downstream between the mighty fortress on the vessel's left and the town and castle on its right. A chain across the river drawn between those two fortifications forced ships to submit, and uncooperative traders could be kept in the dungeon until a ransom was delivered. The dungeon was a wooden float in the well.

Unlike the vast majority of Rhine castles, "the Pfalz" was never conquered or destroyed, withstanding not only wars, but also the natural onslaughts of ice and floods by the river. Its Spartan quarters held about twenty men."
