Czechoslovakia was a former country in Central Europe, established in 1918 after World War I by the unification of the Czech and Slovak regions. It underwent several political changes during the 20th century, including Nazi occupation and becoming a socialist state during the Cold War. In 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into two independent countries: the Czech Republic and Slovakia, in an event known as the "Velvet Divorce."
