Delays. In my appendix "How to Drink" I discussed the "Absolute Cure." And when discovering that Lemurian wine was a deep purple in color, I had to sub Lillet Rouge for Littlet Blanc and had to use a gin that was purple through violets as opposed to a butterfly pea flower which resulted in a massive shift from the original vesper imitation but it's good. "1.5 oz purple gin, 1.0 oz Lillet Rouge, a few dashes of vegetal, add ice, stir, and double strain into a martini glass."

Well this is a happy occasion! Welcome back Zarquon!

Yesterday, even knowing it was going to rain today (for a while, it's currently sunny) I took my car to the carwash and then to an old Hobby Shop I used to visit when I was a more active gamer in the 80's (I gamed a lot more in the 90's but being in Key West at the time I didn't visit this store). The shop, which was opened in the late 70's, still had the same owner. Now in his 70's he is thinking of retiring next year. He jokingly asked if I was interested in it. Now if I had more cash on hand, I would have considered it (that and it's an additional year before I get on the Medicare rolls and besides the money, I'm working for the health insurance). I bought the 5th edition D&D PHB because I had to buy something. I suppose I must read it.

It would be fun to own a hobby shop but I doubt there would be much profit in it. You'd have to look at it as a hobby.

Yeah. I've always said if I were to win the Powerball/lottery, apart from trying to buy Castle Stalker or Bram Castle, I'd like to own a combination Hobby/Book/ Record shop. It would mostly be for sharing my love of music, books and gaming and not for a profit.

I remember when I was young and there were hobby shops and book stores everywhere. Nowadays, there are only a few hobby shops and they are extremely focused on RC and slot cars and the only physical store for books is B&N.

So now we don't just have few places to go, entire publishers are collapsing because B&N and amazon get to choose winners and losers in the book market. And hobbies basically of any creative or enriching sort, you have to order online and more and more often from outside the US.

It makes me feel even more displaced from existence. My body is failing, my dreams are shot, and more and more the spaces I associated with are not just absent, it is as if they never existed.

And that's another problem. It's probably the wrong time in history for a hobby shop. In the old days (when the store opened in the end of the 70's) railroading was the thing, followed by model building. Railroading is gone (and wasn't even in the store). The model builders are dying of old age (the young aren't into models). This basically leaves Warhammer, D&D, and minis for gaming. And with Barbie trying to choke whatever is left from D&D (seriously, I miss the 80's when that witch who owned the Buck Rodgers property was running TSR to the ground). Moreover, it's a small store; it's not like they have a back room for gaming tables (in part because of the declining sales). I think he basically is the only one running the shop as well, another indicator of practically no profits.

In fact, if I were to go into the hobby business, it would be backwards. I would run it from the gaming side. I would get a good space for modern gaming tables. I would charge "rent" like some barbers and hairdressers for groups or even professional DMs to use the tables. I would also host events like painting classes (assuming I could find decent painters who will be willing to demonstrate their art for a moderate price). I would get equipment for gaming stuff, including 3D printers (to create custom minis of their characters). And then, in the corner I would have supplies, but the business would be based on events and table rentals.

New here. Found this region on the list of regions and it sounded interesting

It's interesting all right...

And welcome!
