A flag is a message. A way of letting your citizens know "I AM TOREMICZ CPPIAA AND I AM PROUD" or whatever your nation name is. You could use symbols from colonizers, include a national symbol, etc. I have the fleur-de-lis due to the colonization of France. Also, if you want a symbol, don't tilt it. It should only be tilted if it has symbolic meaning. Also, choose color combinations that are common. I mean, yeah my teal/turquoise is rare in flags, but flags still have it. But if you want unique colors, go ahead! Just make sure its symbolic.
