Regardless of your own stance on the coronavirus, imagine if you will, that he had taken it seriously. He was keeping his base, no matter what, he had them, but he could've won over people who were sitting on the fence, and the pandemic response was their primary sticking point. Not only would more of his own supporters have been alive to vote for him, but centrists and moderates might've swung towards an incumbent. Instead, he alienated pretty much the entire democrat voting bloc (who he didn't have anyway, but that really cemented them to the left), as well as adherents of the medical/scientific community, and even some of the conservative base.

I could definitely be wrong, and he didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell, but it's fun to theorize.
