I used to have a friend which was pretty similar to me, and our relationship could have been described as that of a couple, maybe even more...
A day, I promised him we'd go on a trip to Japan where I did want to confess to him too, but I ended up becoming late because of studying.
1 month after the promise, I finally remembered about the trip and sent him a message, but he didn't respond, until I went to his house and his parents told me he is dead in a hospital because he had a heart attack 3 days before that...I could've atleast witnessed him alive if I remembered earlier, and could even have saved him if I told him to slow down with sugary food. Sadly, what's done can't be undone.
