- - - Senator Richard Polaris' Here we will Remain, most Excellency' Speech to the Mathornian Senate - 30th November, 1757 - - -
Context of the speech:
Both the Mathornian Congress, and the capital, are awash with fear, uncertainty and nervous energy. Polaris had been named after Richard's great grandfather, George Polaris - first President, and who is considered one of the founding fathers of 
Mathorn. George Polaris organisaed the successful revolution against the old Mathornian Royal Lineage, in 1505, which resulted in the Declaration of Independence in 1505. Thus, the capital of the new Federal Republic was named in his honour.
On the 30th November 1757, the Senate had been holding a solemn meeting - Senators were faced with the difficult decision to stay in the capital, or flee for lands which would be untouched by the forthcoming conflict. After untold hours of debate, the Senate seemed inclined to abandon Polaris. Even the objections of then President Howard Northam, could not sway the Senators.
But in the last few moments before the vote was called, Richard Polaris, tired and weary after untold hours of debate, took to the Senate floor. His words struck with a divine weight of provenance, and the Senate heard in them an omen from the gods that could not be ignored. The Senate voted unanimously, ushering in and marshalling the city's defences, as well as inspiring thousands of normal civilians, trapped by circumstance, to join the Mathornian army in the defence of the city.
At the time, perhaps with a sense of irony, Richard Polaris had little appreciation for the weight of his words, or what effect they would have on the nation throughout the coming centuries. This was perhaps the most famous speech ever made in Congress, and a singular Latin phrase encapsulated the contents of this speech. That single Latin phrase is today inscribed on the very foundations of the Mathornian Congress. It speaks of struggle, of hardship, and of loss, but also it is a testament the great power of the Mathornian nation to not only endure, but thrive, regardless of circumstance.

"My fellow Senators, I have listened to the debate in this chamber today, as have several members of the distinguished public. We are being watched intently, and let us all be in no doubt; Our collective vote tonight will have profound consequences, and implications, for this nation. Despair threatens to take hold in the heart of every citizen, indeed I see in fellow members the despair, the hopelessness, of our plight. We are faced with the decision of weather to stay here, in our capital, or flee for lands which will hopefully be untouched by the forthcoming conflict - a conflict that we know will arrive."
"I see it in colleagues eyes - I see the same fear that would take the heart of me! A day may come when the courage of our nation fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when our age, when our democratic experiment, comes crashing down - but it is not this day!"
