It just means that "one" unit of a nation state's
currency is redeemable by a set amount of the precious metal (gold), the reason why a currency would be backed by something precious or physical is that it would make it less prone to inflation, it's commodity money, vs Fiat money which is only backed by the faith that the government places in it.
