The Rogue Nation of Vaan is a colossal, socially progressive nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape and irreverence towards religion. The hard-working, democratic population of 3.054 billion Vaanians live in a state of perpetual fear, as a complete breakdown of social order has led to the rise of order through biker gangs.

The tiny government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Defense, and Welfare. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 7.6%.

The very strong Vaanian economy, worth 174 trillion Gils a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is fairly diversified and led by the Door-to-door Insurance Sales industry, with major contributions from Woodchip Exports, Soda Sales, and Cheese Exports. Average income is 57,053 Gils, but there is a significant disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 168,145 per year while the poor average 15,233, a ratio of 11.0 to 1.

The mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, it is illegal to make racist remarks in public, scientists regularly clone human beings for research purposes, and the government has officially clarified that "wee on your hands to save time" does not count as proper hygiene. Crime is a problem, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Vaan's national animal is the Chocobo, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

Vaan is ranked 146,908^th in the world and 1^st in Ivalice for Smartest Citizens, with 30.29 quips per hour.
