The United Kingdom of Thorn72 is a mammoth, efficient nation, notable for its infamous sell-swords, keen interest in outer space, and punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed, humorless, devout population of 9.697 billion Thorn72ians are prohibited from doing almost everything except voting, which they do timidly and conservatively.

The medium-sized, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Industry. The average income tax rate is 54.7%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient Thorn72ian economy, worth a remarkable 1,265 trillion Euros a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is an enormous, deeply entrenched, fairly diversified black market in Arms Manufacturing, Tourism, Beef-Based Agriculture, and Gambling. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 130,457 Euros, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.2 times as much as the poorest.

A bill to outlaw math homework has been submitted, older citizens lament over the loss of law and order, the saying 'break a leg' is now taken literally, and interviewees for teaching jobs are waterboarded to "reveal undesirable histories". Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Thorn72's national animal is the Scorpion, which is also the nation's favorite main course.

Thorn72 is ranked 300,339^th in the world and 5^th in Starbase 375 for Nicest Citizens, with 0.45 average smiles per day.
