The Grendel Space Agency

Based out of Star City, the Grendel Space Agency is the culmination of science departments, the military, and corporate interests all wrapped up into one. They work closely with the WSA (Wysterian Space Agency) towards the exploration of the universe. A Grendel astronaut was among the first Wysterians to set foot on the Moon, during the Lunar 1 mission, where the GMC (Grendel Motor Corporation) atomic space buggy was deployed. The Flind IIISE, built by Borderland Industrial, lifted the Lunar 1 and other missions off the surface of Wysteria and have launched countless satellites into space. Ares Skirmisher 1 and 2 probes were sent to Mars, as part of the Grendels obligations to the WSA; to prepare the way for future 'manned' missions to the red planet. The GSA also funded the building of two enormous particle colliders: one in the Grendels and a larger one in Isla Vista, where they discovered the Boosun particle.

The GSA has constructed a number of Furlabs in orbit; mostly research stations to create new products for Grendel corporations. Furlab 6 was permanently joined with Babylon 1 (Delenn and The Zocalo), to created Babylon 2, a jointly run asset for use by the WSA. There was also the launch of a Space Tug or VASIMIR (Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket), used to alter the trajectory of asteroids and comets that might otherwise impact the markets of Wysteria in a negative manner. The Star Paradigm Corporation also manufactured I-Tugs, to act as the engines for satellites that no longer had the power to maintain their orbits.

Jackal Chaarm represented the resort industry in space. Along with investors based out of Casino City, he created the orbital casino and resort: Snake Eyes. Despite early space tourism success, there were some concerns when a compartment was exposed to space and seventeen people died. An investigation found that a suicidal engineer, who was going to lose his job and had problems at home, bypassed safety protocols to blow a hatch. Owing to security concerns and being unable to accommodate the resort's launch schedule, Star City soon demanded that Snake Eyes be serviced by a civilian space port. This resulted in the building of the Chaarm Starport for shuttle launches to Snake Eyes. Afterwards, Chaarm staged an international gaming event, to help bring the tourists back to the space resort. The Triumvirate Texas Hold 'em Tournament was held on board Snake Eyes, with gamblers from the regions of Texas, the Heartland, and Wysteria vying for the prize.

The Grendels worked together with their neighbours in Marldeep in the Prospector Project to mine the Moon of Helium-3, a valuable source of energy. The partnership was secretly negotiated during the WSA Conference on Space, where the Grendels were getting a lot of opposition for their plans to mine the moon. By teaming up with Marldeep, the Grendels were able to quell opposition in the Wysterian Space Agency against their extraterrestrial mining ventures. When Yarooo gives exclusive lunar mining rights from the Grendels to his newly acquired Utopian Mining Corporation (Isla Vista based), over the Glow in the Dark Mining Corporation, it creates resentment among Clan Woodan (who control a majority share of the Glow in the Dark Mining Corporation). The GSA has also been involved with Marldeep in Project Rockhound, sending probes to seek out resources for future mining operations in the Asteroid Belt. The first of these probes, Astro Hunter 1, successfully landed on an asteroid and returned to Wysteria with geological samples, paving the way for future missions. The increased focus on extraterrestrial resource exploitation directly resulted in the building of the colossal Juggernaut Station, to deal with the lunar mining trade. With the Juggernaut Station coming online, the remaining Furlab Stations became obsolete and it was decided to sell them to closely allied nation states. Furlab 7 was sold to Kamadhatu and subsequently renamed Manjushri. Furlab 4 was later sold to Undivulged Principles. The demands of the Prospector Project made it necessary for the GSA to build additional space stations for uses other than supporting lunar mining. Two smaller stations, Anchor 1 and 2, were built to support further scientific laboratories, research, and exploration.

There has been significant militarization of space by the Grendels. Initially, this amounted to just surveillance and communications satellites for the military. This was not all that different from what other nations were doing, although they were in greater numbers. Then came the hunter killer satellites, with pulse lasers, for ICBM defence. Despite having vast stocks of WMD's and using them on several occasions, the Grendels have long denounced weapons of mass destruction, as violating the Warrior Code. The lowering of the threat of nuclear holocaust was accomplished with the Shield of Heaven program, with the assistance of their closest allies in Wysteria. The Grendels also built hypersonic scramjets, deployed out of Star City for precision military strikes. The cost of the scramjets ensured they were produced in small numbers and used only sparingly.

When the Grendels purchased three squadrons of starfuries from The Zocalo, it caused quite a stir in Wysteria. This purchase was done to balance similar arms purchases made by Epona. Despite diplomatic relations between the two governments being good, a minor space arms race took place in Wysteria. Diplomatic efforts eventually led to all nations involved disarming their starfuries, agreeing to use them only for science and construction. This changed when Zakommia openly armed their orbital assets, resulting in the Grendels' starfuries being rearmed, with new and improved weaponry. During the conflict with the ZaKommian Trade Master, fighting broke out in orbit between the Grendels' starfuries and the Trade Master's space marines. This battle in space ended in the destruction of the Trade Master's space marines and orbital assets, but at the cost of two starfuries and the destruction of Furlab 5. Afterwards, the Grendels announced that the Zakommian Trade Master would be blockaded from orbit, and threatened to shoot down any launches they made.

Later, during the Woodan Clan Rebellion, a small team of Grendel rebels used a pod to board Furlab 3,which was undergoing final salvage before reentry. The rebel plan was to kill the salvage crew and fly the crew's shuttle to the Juggernaut Station. Once there they would detonate a nuke in close proximity to the station and destroy it. The Woodan Clan were furious about being shut out of lunar mining opportunities, after Yarooo had given the mining rights to the Moon to his newly acquired Utopian Mining Corporation. By destroying Juggernaut, they would cripple lunar mining operations. Unfortunately for the rebels, the ensuing fight for Furlab 3 resulted in the death of everyone on board, crew and raiders alike. Woodan Clan's gambit to disrupt Yarooo's hold on lunar mining failed.
