While they are mashed into the thorn, the archaeologists anglicized the word, treating the thorn like the combination of the letters t and h, instead of a separate letter.

That's why 'thou' became 'you', because when the english sent books to german nations to be printed, they didn't recognize the thorn, and chose y, because it was most similar.
