Does India have compulsory voting ?

Former JEEtard, towards the end of 11 I realised this isn't what I want. I will probably pursue Economics after school.

Damn, I always wanted to pursue economics as a career but quite a niche profession atleast in India. Even IITs offer economics courses though you could have tried for that. I think Bombay and Kanpur do atleast.

Is that a thing in your country? Sounds very american though. We are gunna give you democracy and you're gonna like it.

If you want to, then go for it! Don't study something you don't like and spend the next 35 years working in the same field. It's literally the worst thing you could do to yourself.

compulsory voting is a middle finger to a democratic system

SRVy wrote:Fortunately* not.

(Some) People complain that policies cater only to a particular class, but don't go out to vote, so why will anyone make policies that cater to them? (Not that they shouldn't, but it won't be in their interest?)

Won't it be better because everyone's opinion is counted?

It discourages extremist politics.

I like computers equally well so i guess I'll just go for cse at this point lol. But if I had the choice now to change the past I might have taken arts and then pursued eco n stuff from a foreign uni tbh.

Might go for it if I don't get Comp Sci though I think the cutoff last year for eco was around 2000 for Bombay and Kanpur.

You said you like eco so I assumed you have taken PCM + eco instead of PCMB. Then it is completely fine. If you want to go to a good American university, take AP Economics and the SAT.

Wait till you hear about Modi.

North Korea Choson wrote:America ain't even has mandatory voting.

I wonder if any place does tho. Glebs however have to either vote or face death by firing squad if they fail to press the button/submit the ballot to the correct party (mine).

I didn't know you could taken eco with PCM, we only had options like computer science or Physical ed, due to JEE I had to take physical ed so i could get more time for PCM. Are you from ICSE or something? I don't think you can have eco with pcm in cbse.

Do you really think Brahmins(5%) middle class (4.86%) can make any difference even if they vote??
The moment these people become active hate politics against them rises. Even if they vote they will get nothing. So, they enjoy the holiday.

Y'know government policies don't always have to be caste specific? And neither is it the fact that all social groups will make mutually exclusive decisions.
While yeah the effects one faces does depend on the class, mostly middle class facing the brunt of the worst and very few if not none of the benefits, the 4.86% figure seems to be generated out of thin air. The actual fraction of middle class was around 1/3rd if i remember correctly or roughly 33%. Thats a big enough bloc to make a difference. Go vote if you can!
I personally would not have voted even if I were eligible simply because none of the parties resonate much with me, both of them are crooked pigs tbh.

Although that doesn't change the fact that being a general middle class male sucks and will continue to suck in the future, especially in the academic and jobs field. And it only worsened with the breach of the 50% reservation cap with EWS and now they're proposing to breach it even more. Right now only less 40% of the seats in engineering colleges are unreserved, rest 60% are all reserved which accept candidates even with 10 times worse ranks (In fact, IITBombay CSE branch for Gen only accepted the guy with All India Rank of 67, while a reserved guy with 1000+ Rank got the seat.) So yeah just work hard to get out of here so your kids don't have to face the same stuff.

Yeah I study in the ISC board. There along with PCM, you can choose from a wide range of subjects like Economics, Comp Sc, Biology, Psychology etc.
