Could someone explain what MT and PT mean? Many of the RP forums seem to have them in their names, and I have no clue what they mean.

Also, when an RP thread says “OOC” in their name, does it mean that the RP is not based on the nations of NS (i.e. it is concerned with something completely unrelated, such as fantasy or mystery), or does it mean that that specific thread is purely for out-of-character talk to discuss the rules and sign-ups for an RP and the actually role-playing takes place on another thread?

I’m sorry; I’m trying my first RP, but I don’t know much about the terminology of it all.

"Mariner Trench" apparently. They are defenders. Read the description at The MT Army for more.

MT = Modern Tech. Basically set in current day.

PT I think means Past Tech but I'm not sure. I've seen PMT for Post-Modern Tech (so set 20-50 years in the future), maybe it could also potentially be an even shorter version of PMT.

OOC means it's the discussion thread about the RP. So you have an IC (In Character) thread for posting the actual roleplay, and the OOC (Out of Character) thread to talk about what's going on, plan things, what have you. I believe it's also used for sign ups if it's an open RP.

The top 5 boards - F&NI, NS, II, GE&T, and Sports - are all based on your nation and people from it. Portal to the Multiverse near the bottom of the forum is for stuff not based on NS nations.

Not a role player, but PT and MT stand for Past Tech and Modern Tech I believe, and it is a loose guideline on the era of the nation. PT might be tech from the 17 or 1800s whereas MT would be tech from the last 50 years or so. You might also see PMT (Post Modern Tech) for tech of the near future eg. 2050s, or FT (Future Tech) for tech of the far future eg 2200s.

Out-Of-Character is usually the rules and sign up thread and there generally is an In-Character thread where the RP takes place. Pretty sure that even if you aren't role-playing as your NS nation it's still "in character" as you are in a character, even if it isn't your own.

I'm not a role player, so if I have any facts wrong please correct me, RP nations of Forest.

Hey! I saw you posted here and on the forum, so I can answer both places.

You basically have it right. MT is Modern Tech and RPs that take place modern day with modern tech. PT is for any RPs in the past, and can vary from medieval times to the 1980s depending.

OOC is Out of Character, and on the forums usually mean a thread is for discussing an RP and being the place players can discuss things or ask questions. IC is In Character and where the roleplay happens.

Also, if you have any questions in the future, always feel free to telegram me too if you have any questions, any time. I know it can seem like a lot at first, but you will pick it up in no time!

My favourite tree is the Shoe Tree

A device approximating the shape of a foot that is placed inside a shoe to preserve its shape, stop it from developing creases and thereby extend the life of the shoe.

Perhaps more important than maintaining the shape, shoe trees also play a crucial part in wicking away moisture caused by sweat - a major cause of lining rot and leather degradation. This is especially important when shoes are worn without socks.

Higher quality shoe trees are made from softwood, usually cedar, which helps control odor and absorb moisture.

May your linings never rot

My favorite tree is Thuja plicata, the western red cedar. They're extremely abundant in Washington state and I have a bunch of mature cedars all over my yard. Interesting facts about them: despite the name, they're not true members of the cedar family, they're actually a kind of cypress. The bark is quite lovely and distinctive and the evergreen foliage sort of resembles a scaled fern instead of the usual needles. They're extremely long-lived and can live for upwards of 1,000 years. They're also pretty hardy and are resistant to laminated root rot which is the biggest threat to the trees in our area. Unfortunately they're vulnerable to drought which will be an issue in our climate change future.

Interestingly, although Western Red Cedars are my favorite tree overall, my favorite tree in my yard is actually a Douglas fir. It's absolutely massive, my rough calculation puts it at ~200 feet. It is so large it has completed shaped the entire hillside around it. The way it stands out, dominating its hillside all by itself, is the reason I nicknamed it Yggdrassil.

Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir are my two favorite trees as well!

Both wonderful trees! Of course, all conifers are nice! If you ever find yourself on Vancouver Island in Canada, I highly recommend visiting Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park as it is the most spectacular concentration of Douglas Fir I have ever seen. The main road from Nanaimo to Port Alberni passes right through it. Bonuses around Port Alberni include some beautiful lakes as well as great views of the Golden Hinde, which is the high point of the island and reflects light in an especially spectacular manner!

I visited there two summers ago -- here's a photo I submitted to the 2018 Photo Contest of one just down the road in Ucluelet:

I’m really happy to hear about all of the protests that have been happening all over the world against their corrupt leaders. Belarus has been protesting against Lukashenko, a city in the Far East of Russia called Khabarovsk has been protesting against Putin, Montenegrin Serbs have been protesting for their religious rights, Lebanon has been protesting against their corrupt government (and also against Hezbollah), Hong Kong against mainland China, and many Israelis have been protesting against Netanyahu, not to mention the BLM protests in Portland, Seattle, and elsewhere. It seems finally people are waking up and trying to bring their nations back to the good countries they once were.

I remember that but did not realize that it was taken over there. I haven't been through the region since the mid-'00s but have heard that Tofino has been Aspenized. I certainly hope that Ucluelet has escaped that fate! Fortunately, Saturna Island is still pretty rustic considering how easy it is to take a ferry over to it.

I’ve been to BC quite a few times, but never Vancouver Island itself. I’ll have to check it out one of these days.

There have also been some vigorous protests in Bulgaria against the current PM and his cronies, Boyko Borissov. They've been going on for just over a month in Sofia. The current Bulgarian government is incredibly corrupt at all levels, and it is time for change there as well.

Did I miss something? What's with the talk about trees—

I'll have to join in later, I can say a few things for my array of favorite trees and I'm too lazy to type them on mobile.

Ooh discussion about trees? Here's an interesting read about a critically endangered tree native to Southeastern US: The Florida Torreya! ^-^

Looking at the Wikipedia for it, it looks like another sad story of a tree whose habitat is almost entirely gone, and which is also fighting against some kind of fungal blight that significantly disrupts the lifecycle of the trees and prevents the remaining specimens from reproducing. It's like an echo of the American chestnut, except that it never had a wide range, in recent millennia at least.

From an ecological point of view, it is extremely important to protect habitats and broad swaths of landscape in the Southeast, especially around the Gulf Coast. For lack of glaciation and with relatively constant precipitation and temperatures, that part of North America is the most diverse in terms of number of species, endemic species, etc.

I blame Inner Bele Levy Epies.

Joe Biden just chose Kamala Harris as his running mate. Any thoughts?

Personally, I think Kamala Harris is a great person and a great politician, but strategically speaking, Biden made a mistake. He greatly underestimated how important the Progressive vote is, and he also overestimated Kamala’s popularity among black and minority voters. Progressives have said time and time again that they wanted him to pick a progressive VP, and even other political strategists said that he needed a progressive VP pick if he wanted to win over more progressives. And Kamala Harris isn’t even very popular among black people; even Biden is more popular than Kamala. Not to mention her tough on crime, war on drugs-type policies as AG of California, or her constant attempts at sound bytes in the debates. If I were him, I would’ve picked either Karen Bass, Barbara Lee, or Ayanna Presley. They are all Black, female, and progressive, and they each carry with them some sort of weight. Karen Bass gained a lot of notoriety recently due to her being on Biden’s shortlist, Barbara Lee carries with her her experience in Congress as the former chair of the Progressive Caucus, and Ayanna Presley is very popular due to her being a member of the Squad. Any of them would’ve been a better strategic choice. But what’s done is done, and so we all must now work towards the (now even harder) task of winning over progressives so we can defeat Trump.

Middle Barael wrote:Barbara Lee carries with her her experience in Congress as the former chair of the Progressive Caucus

If I were Biden, this is who I'd pick, she has experience.

Darths and Droids wrote:If I were Biden, this is who I'd pick, she has experience.

Yeah, but so do all of the others I mentioned. Plus, it is more important now strategically speaking to unite the Democratic Party than to chose experience. He needed a progressive woman of color, and I fear Kampala will harm both the Progressive Vote and also those who want police reform and criminal justice reform, due to her tough on crime policies and her moderate views.
