Quebecois nationalists had gotten tired of electoralism, realizing that the federal government was never going to give them independence democratically. Thus, a group of 20 disgruntled former Parti members gathered in a hotel conference room in Montreal to form the FLQ: Le Front de Libération du Québec (Quebec Liberation Front for you angl*phones). It was a radical, far-left militant and revolutionary organization that was not scared to use morally ambiguous tactics to secure their goal of an independent socialist Quebec. These included terrorism, kidnappings, bombings and drug trafficking. They soon secured a large amount of support in working class neighbourhoods of Montreal, and quickly gained de facto control over the majority of the Montreal metro area through a combination of grassroots local support and armed occupation. The membership of the organization quickly grew to over 10,000. The Federal Government officially put them on the List of Terrorist Organization after they bombed a local MLA's headquarters, killing 5 people, including the MLA himself. There are also rumours of them being funded by the local mafia, though these are unconfirmed (though it does appear that a large amount of their weapons come from undisclosed sources in the area).
