I'm very careful of restricting political freedom. And I think that barring someone from running for office is a pretty drastic step. And I don't think that being accused or even convicted of a minor crime should necessarily be an automatic disqualifier.

However, the distinction I think I need to draw in Trump's case is that he committed crimes in office, directly related to the office he held and the influence it gave him. He abused the position he was elected to. For that reason, I think it is clear that he cannot be trusted to properly perform the duties of an elected official, and he should be barred from holding office again to ensure that he can't abuse the associated power and influence again.
