Military Organization

Kaq'bartunisar/Mountaineers
The Kaq'bartunisar ("those atop the mountain") are a type of light infantry mainly made up from the male members of the ruling K'vandari mountain clans. They are specially tasked with the defense of the rough mountain range encompassing Spezian territory. Small groups of Kaq'bartunisar can effectively and independently operate in the harsh mountainous climate, and by extension also snowy or arid terrain.

Tujugvarisar/Infantry
The Tujugvarisar ("those carrying rifles") are simple light infantry, recruited from the general population of the tribes making up the Spezian league. There is nothing special about them. The name particle "-gvar-" is a loanword from Vedurgothic, as the K'vandari had to resort to need-based borrowings regarding explosive firearms.

Dobts'artunisar/Cavalry
The Dobts'artunisar ("those on horseback") make up the entirety of Spezian cavalry and exclusively operate in the wide plains of the Southern Heartlands. This peculiarity can be explained that, apart from the wide valley roads, most regions of Spezian core territory is not suited for warfare on horseback. While most K'vandari riders are native to the Southern Heartland region, a decent number Dobts'artunisar are expierenced mercenaries from Kara-Uzbekia.

Military Equipment

The Bits'ikaĩ
The Bits'iakĩ (literally "little sword") is a dagger whose form is typical for the secondary hand weaponry used by the Montealban mountain people. Both the handle and sheath are usually decorated with gold or silver designs, and sometimes even include embedded gemstones. Following the ancient Spezian proverb "What kind of K'vandari is the one who does not even posess a bits'iakĩ?", every recruit is expected to carry his own into military service as a part of basic equipment.

Overview
The Shamkhalate of Al-Duristan is an independant kingdom resting along the Dur Mountains. It has since medieval times, been quite belligerent against its neighbors developing a ferocious warlike reputation. Much of the rocky terrain of the country is marked by massive defensible towers, fortified towns called auls, castle-like complexes called Qalats, and a hostile population that is renowned as fierce fighters no matter their religion or gender.

In recent times, the Duristani have been in around a century or more of near constant war with the Vedigothic Empire and Nizkhian Empire who have jostled for control over the country and have both been raided deep into their countries by Duristani outriders. The wars are bloody and deprave, as neither side had gained a substanial edge in twenty years. This changed with Shamkhal Iijnatius V, "the Ruddy" who modernized the army and led brutal campaigns in the Seventh Nizh-Duristani War and Fifth Scanso-Duristani War. Although not able to seize Beláfidar, the "lost city" to the Duristani, heavy damage was done to the Nizhkians and Vedigoths whose borders with Duristan were depopulated and scorched.

During the War of the First Containment Coalition and the War of the Second Containment Coalition, Al-Duristan served a minor role in the conflicts by supplying mercenaries and harrying Coalition members at its borders. It also provided diplomatic support to the Revolution. The rise of Nabil, is looked upon greatly by the mountaineers of Al-Duristan.

The Shamkhalate has felt two years of peace, the longest in decades. In this time, the army continues to modernize and prepare for both an offensive and defense war against its neighbors.

The Shamkhalate supports itself economically with burgeoning a mining industry, weapons manufactoring and the trade it receives from traders in the south and occassionally north.

They are swift, brave, and resilient militias formed by a teip who gathers itself. All vary and size but abhere to the Shamkhal, his laws, and his systems. Each officer is a nobleman of the teip, and each leads their unit with a rank. The irregulars are despoilers and disperse into the countryside both in offensive and defensive capacities. As experts of geurilla warfare, they rarely abhere to line formations, and instead are untilized best in skirmishing, flanking maneauvers and screening the army.

Naval Forces
The Shamkhalate is landlocked but has many rivers. A small fleet of skiffs and gunboats, numbering in total 50 crafts roam the waters and protect river crossings, ferry soldiers and supplies, and help maintan trade along the river. It also maintains bridges. The fleet supplements the army with fish that it catches.

Military Equipment

Jezzail- Common rifle/smoothbore musket used by the peasantry of Al-Duristan. Every landowning household has atleast one, which is usually an heirloom past down through generations. Typically long and wrapped in a pelt or cloth for long travel. Very accurate.

Musket / Musketoon / Carbine / Pistols: With a hyperactivity in war, the people have requisitioned many standard and mass-produced guns for Al-Duristan. Gunsmiths throughout the Shamkhalate rip apart, refit, and reproduce various models of guns found in enemy armies. Parts of a standard musket might be sold to repair a jezzail or improve one. Fidar Pass in the south and north of Tamburrah Al-Mujahid, is known producing copies of captured muskets. Tamburrah Al-Mujahid and the Seltzer Department in its whole, is also known for its many gunsmiths, with two state musket factories.

Most Duristani prefer the utility of the musketoon and carbine which are especially sought after, after a battle as are pistols. A typical cavalryman of the Duristani tries to carry several pistols on their person.

Qama - Short dagger/sword used for close quarters combat. Given to both boys and girls as a rite of passage and is commonly the blade of choice for duels.

Sashko - The blade of the Duristani, it is a long slender blade with a slight curve. It has a hook pommel and no guard. Very common among the middle class and nobility.

Peshkabz - An increasingly rare, slender blade used to penetrate chainmail in an armored opponent.

Xencer- Ceremonial blade that forms a "J" shape. Rarely used in combat, it is worn on the belt as at festivities and social gatherings but can be used for practical use at those.

Pulwar- A domestic variant of scimitar-type swords, these swords are favored by the prestigious cavalry units of the Shamkhal's units.

Shield - Seldom seen on the battlefield now except by traditionalist tieps, shields of Al-Duristan are small roughly comparable to targes and bucklers. Usually made out of bronze, steel, wood wrapped in leather, or iron.

Armor- Still worn by nobility, the warrior of Al-Duristan wear chainmail under or over their uniforms and clothes. This usuage, dwindles by the year, however still provides many soldiers adequate protection once locked in melee. Some soldier still wear in addition conical helms and bracers. Its utility in close quarters keeps it on the battlefield.

Bow and Arrow - Used recreationally by peasants and nobles, the composite bow is still in use as a hunting tool and ocassionally during uprisings and geurilla raids to save on gunpowder.

Lance - Used by Cöömin and Pahonian cavalry units, who traditionally use the weapon.

Cannon- Due to rugged terrain, the Duristani army utilized swivel guns mounted to camels to manuever cannons into position. In addition, Tamburrah Al-Mujahid casts 4-lb, 8-lb and 12-lb bronze cannons. Due to terrain, field guns are relegated to 4-lb and 8-lb on thw field while 12-lb pieces are mainly emplaced in qalats and major walled cities.

Cannons are notoriously always spiked by Duristani units, especially cavalry. Cannons are high value, and a major scavange find for the Duristani as the army set bounties for their aquisition.

Uniforms
The cavalry was a brilliant admixture of Al-Duristan's diverse peoples. The cavalry was mix of the old and new, a clash of styles. The standard Duristani wore yellow beshmets, dark green woolen chohkla with yellow facings overtop faced lined with yellow gazyr. They wore tight green trousers were reinforced by leather on the inside and a stripe of yellow ran down the length of the trousers. The trousers were pulled tight at the knees with a band of leather and the high leather boots had spurs clasped to them. Over their uniform many wore green burkhas, many lined with furs at the collar. Bronze symbols clasped plumes to their black busbys and indicating their unit. They wore a sabretache, with the personal arms of the Shamkhal displayed: three snow leopards on crimson red. Many wore their hair in the cadenette, halfshaven, flowing wild and free, or cut Kvandari style and all had drooping and thick mustaches or thick bushy beards. Each had a scimitar and kindjal hanging from hardy leather belts clasped with bronze. Sets of pistols joined them at the belt with carbines or jezzails wrapped in leather, cloth or pelts was on their backs or tied to their saddle.

The heavy cavalry units, were mostly brazen traditionalist Duristanis who kept to the old way of wearing chainmail, conical helmets, bracers, and bucklers. However the Cöömins and Pahonians went further, the former wearing lamellar plates and some wearing conical helmets with facemasks of mustached demonic faces, while the latter wore cuirasses and open faced helmets with wooden arches lined with feathers attached to their saddle. These armored riders forgoed the musket and kindjal for the lance and carried maces and axes.

The lightest of the cavalry would be the Afruicans who forgoed the chohkla for a tight waistcoat and wore turbans.

The infantry, were similar to the cavalry in uniform but different in coloration. Their chohkla and trousers were a maroon, with brilliant blue beshmets A line of blue ran the length of the trousers. Overtop they wore a green burkas and on their head they wore black bashlyks or papakhas. Most held jezzails and muskets with long bayonets. Kindjals were uniform as a sidearm.

Irregular infantry, the gazavat or tiep militiamen formed a motley screening force with varying colors, equipment and uniforms. Plenty wore buckskin. Many carried axes and acted as foragers and scouts when not on the march. Their jezzails were long, even by jezzail standards and were rifled.

The artillery were a uniform group, wearing brilliant blue chohkla and trousers with white beshmets and parpakhas.Their heavy bronze cast guns were formitable as any army's but lighter and maneuverable. The zamburak artillery prodded forth with their wooly twin-humped camels, their riders gently rubbing their big brutes.

On the 21st of November, 1804, a striking and warlike cavalcade was traversing at a slow pace a wide and recessed valley in Lemkovia. In front, on a dusty brown rahvan, rode a short, sallow-faced man with greying dark hair and a quick, eager glance, whose notice nothing seemed to escape. His colorful kaftan was covered by a grey overcoat, which met a long sirwal, culminating finally in a pair of low riding boots, and on his head was a low, weather-stained sarık. He was followed by a crowd of officers, evidently of high rank, for their uniforms, saddle-cloths, and wrapped fezzes were heavily laced in the modern western style recently adopted in the realm, and they had the bold, dignified bearing of leaders of men. In front and in the flanks of the party were scattered watchful vedettes, and behind followed a strong squadron of picked cavalry in deep red dolmans and black conical karakuls. The leading horseman rode in silence over the valley floor, first to one point then to another, examining with anxious care every feature of the ground. No one addressed him, for he was a man whose train of thought was not to be lightly interrupted. Suddenly, at length, he drew rein, and, turning to the body of officers said: "Gentlemen, examine this ground carefully. It will soon be a field of battle upon which you will all have a part to play." The speaker was the soon-to-be emperor of the Eyrani people, Nabil bin Kareem Al Bunbirti. His hearers were his generals and staff. He had been reconnoitering, surrounded and guarded by his devoted Nizam Cavalry of the Guard, the valley pass of Klapkaszerda, from which the main part of the arena where a new Coalition War was to begin.

It is 1804, and the continental balance of power is in ruins, yet peace has reigned now for two years — the longest time in over a decade. The ancien states of the continent had fought to contain the republican revolution consuming the vast and powerful Eyrani Sultanate, fearing rightly that in the wake of the Sultan's overthrowal that revolutionary fervor would spread north into their own absolutist realms. Following many long years of war, peace was achieved in the Treaties of Amestris and Kopenwald, recognizing the massive advances of the newly-established Eyrani Republic, whose revolutionary army had shockingly and humiliatingly beaten back the established powers. These stunning victories were in equal part the consequence of mass republican volunteerism and the neoteric strategy of its general staff, chief among whom Serdar Nabil bin Kareem Al Bunbirti had come to especially stand out. Shortly following the conclusion of the treaties ending the War of the Second Containment Coalition, Al Bunbirti removed the national revolutionary government in a swift and nonviolent coup d'etat and established himself as sole protector of the republic and the revolution. Now, two years since the Coup of 1st Teşrin, and with extensive government and military reforms undergone, the young general-turned-ruler seems poised to aim for much higher ambitions.

REGIONAL INFORMATION
THE EYRANISTAN REVOLUTIONARY REPUBLIC - THE DEPOSED PORTE
By 1790, and far south of what will in centuries become Monbalaur, the aging Eyranistan Sultanate had been beset by a severe series of military coups organized by the leaders of its Yenicharri armies. The sultanate was already rapidly in decline by the middle of the century, bleeding territory to its once-subjugated minorities. Attempts at reform by the advisory council and Porte were blocked continuously however by the traditionalist and increasingly-authoritarian Sultans and their Yenicharri elite guard. When a reform-minded Sultan did succeed to the throne in the 1780s, the Yenicharri deposed him by force, maintaining the conservative illusion of being rulers of a dying realm. Yet the ideas of reform lived on despite the return to authority, and only a decade later the Yenicharri had finally met their match.
When a severe bread shortage struck the Eryani capital of Pahran, general rebellion in the capital and other major cities grew quickly and unstoppably into a full revolution. Sensing the winds of change, thinkers from the west and east alike flocked to join the uprising, importing their philosophies influenced by the enlightening ideas of the Osvietenstvo Movement. Soon the modest aims for system reform grew into true revolutionary sentiment. In 1791 the Sultan was captured and put to death by the people in Pahran for conspiring with the Yenicharri to remove the revolutionary council. A month later, the Government of the Grand National Assembly was formed and a new constitution drafted, declaring Eyranistan a Republic, equalizing all men and abolishing the nobility and their Yenicharri bodyguards. The Sultan's execution threw the powers of the continent into a frenzied terror, and the Wars of Containment began.
The Republic has survived and even achieved a significant victory over the imperial powers in a decade of war. Yet with the conclusion of peace, the new republic does not rest, and only months after the ratification of the dual treaties, the state was once again seized by another coup. It is one not from the Yenicharris however, but the emir Nabil bin Kareem Al Bunbirti, an upstart general and minor noble from the village of Thania. Having ascended rapidly through the military of Eyranistan through strategic innovation and martial cunning, the young leader now finds himself at the head of the Eyrani people and seems poised to again expand the fires of revolution.

THE HOLY VEDIGOTHIC EMPIRE - THE ARCHAIC FRANKENSTEIN
Vedigothia has always been a rival of Eyranistan. Or, more accurately, the ruling family of von Scansen has always been a rival of Eyranistan, as the Kaisers of Vedigothia have vied for power and influence over the continental south against Eyranistani Sultans for many generations. The Vedigothic Empire is a unique system, far unlike the other monarchical powers, being a polity of many corporate states who are not ruled by the emperor per se but negotiate with him with significant autonomy. The imperial throne is electoral, but the von Scansen family has held the position for centuries, as other rulers have had neither the intrigue nor family connections of the Scansens. Wilhelmus III is the first Scansen monarch to use the title Emperor of Scansinia. His age-old possessions across the Holy Vedigothic Empire have been largely stripped away by a series of disasters inflicted by the upstart Al Bunbirti and his Eyrani hordes. The old Empire is fraying at the edges, and von Scansen dominance is under threat both within and without the decaying Empire.

THE TSARDOM OF NIZHKIA - THE EASTERN YOKE
The Nizhkian Empire is the single largest state on the globe, with more than a hundred million living under its rule — a force not to be lightly trifled with. Its rise to power has coincided with the equal decline of most of its neighbors, Gauthalla in the north, Xuduoshan in the far east, and even the aging Eyranistan. Nizhkia has been ruled by the Tsars of the Vladinov family for centuries, but unlike much of the continent, has been unable to centralize the rule of the emperor over the influence of its many and diverse voivodes who govern at the local level. While the emperor can technically overrule the decision of any one voivode, they nevertheless prove an irremovable stumbling block that makes the giant mass of the Empire tremendously slow to wield. It is for this slowness and independent-mindedness of voivode generals that Nizhkia suffered incredible defeats at the hand of the zealous masses of the new Eyrani republic. Now Nizkia, under Tsar Maksimilian Vladinov, contemplates war against Eyranistan again. The threat posed to the vast empire by the new general-consul is real. Al Bunbirti has set himself up as the equal of the Tsar, and that is an implicit challenge.

THE LANDS BETWEEN
Between the three great powers, many smaller states have fallen victim to both the unceasing ambition of Al Bunbirti and the vengeful annoyance of the ancien states. The Meyger Kingdom has had its ancestral homelands eroded by both empire and republic and exists now as a rump state in the deep shadow of its former power. This Hosszú Tragédia has left an equal number of Meygers as vengeful and impassioned as it has those left disillusioned and in a permanent Gloomy Sunday.
The Kingdom of Krumpelberg is fractured after its prince was killed falling off of his horse into the river Albina while trying to prevent a crossing by Al Bunbirti. Its coastal provinces have fallen to both the Eyrani and Nizhkian, and in its west, the Al Duristan Shamkhalate is only growing in strength.
In the southwest, the minor states on the shores of the Punanedria Sea can only negotiate for their own existence with the new Eyrani power to their immediate east, and careful cooperation keeps them from total destruction.
To the north, what once was the mighty Krasnayan Commonwealth has ceased to exist, carved between its hungry neighbors. The last partitioning was only a decade ago, shepherded by "the traitor duke" of Scheinermark, who negotiated the lines of partition between Nizhkia and Vedigothia for his own former state.
Further north of the Vedigothic Empire and across the sea is the Kingdom of Ingerland, a significant island power. Because of its distance from the Eyrani republic, Ingerland can only provide naval support, which it has in ample supply.

AND YOU
You too may find a role in this world undergoing fiery change. Maybe you will assist the upstart Eyranis in the spreading of the revolutionary ideal, or fight to contain it for your own throne's sake. Maybe you will defend the aging lands of the Scansen Kaiser, or use the chaos to further your own autonomy in the Empire. Maybe you will uphold the still-rising power of the massive Nizhkian Empire, or seek to unravel its ancient structure. Maybe you merely try to survive amidst the turmoil of continent-spanning war and revolutionary fire.
The stage is set, and the performers stand ready to play their parts. Now it is time for you to take up your instrument in this concert of nations, and let its symphony play.
