Busan/Montreal- In what some consider to be a test of international laws and sanctions, ORSOComm, the joint venture of Korean,Canadian, and Orsonian companies is preparing to file for an international IPO in London. The IPO would only be people without residency or citizenship in Oceara, Novo, and the SRA. The company explained to us that they need to prohibit these people from investing to comply with international sanctions. While the paperwork for an IPO has been filled out, it has not been submitted. Sources within the company say they if international investors will want to be tied to a company like this. As One anonymous Company executive told us, While this is place of international business and freedom, we do not know if they will automatically allow a company with our links to be available for investment, especially one that runs counter to their national goals. If we are successful here, we will expand our presence into other countries.”

ORSOComm is one of the largest communication companies in Orson. They provide telecommunication services, cloud storage/solutions, T1 fiber connections, and helped create and maintain the Orsonian intranet.

Ryan Industries has stated that expanding or establishing operations in Rapture has been forbidden by Andrew Ryan; ultimately Ryan is in charge of leasing space within Rapture and he reserves the right to refuse tenants or renters for any reason or no reason.

Cybusian authorities have refused to list the company, partly because stock markets simply aren’t really a thing in the Empire. See this post for an explanation: page=rmb/postid=41761878

Cybus1 wrote:Somehow that seems almost...patronizing, I guess?
But it is an idea worth exploring. Offer them land on the outskirts of the empire, but by now it’s an inner world, and they have a greater degree of autonomy than most worlds. Hmm. I’ll think about it.

Oh, it certainly is patronizing. The concept, as I mentioned, is lifted from the establishment of Liberia, which was an American attempt to send freed slaves to their 'homeland', and British Sierra Leone, which was a similar project that doubled as a base for antislavery patrols. I'm more qualified to speak on Sierra Leone, as it's a major element of my history dissertation, but the general idea was that Africans had been badly abused by the slave trade, and only the guiding light of 'commerce, christianity, and civilization' could set them right. On a more practical level, the British needed somewhere to resettle the tens of thousands of Africans they were capturing from the hulls of slave ships at sea. Some attempts were made to create agricultural villages in the English fashion, but in reality most Africans settled around the capital and engaged in trade, though some became missionaries and would play a major role in spreading Christianity throughout West Africa.

Obviously the situation of Orsonians is very different, and I'm not sure if there was even much of a 'trade' in Orsonian slaves, but after their emancipation there would certainly have been large-scale migrations as they attempted to find work and start anew. I've talked about this before, but I think Cybusian culture is reminiscent of Victorian Britain in its civilizing mission, and I wouldn't think it impossible that a group of altruistic, albeit patronizing, Mercerist missionaries would want to find a permanent home for some of the recently liberated Orsonians. Whether the original settlers embraced Cybusian culture, or more likely created a creolized identity all to themselves, is uncertain, but the idea is plausible in my mind.

Another direction could involve a 'homeland' planet that Orsonian intellectuals identified as their sacred home, similar to how nineteenth-century Zionists pushed an ancestral claim to a Jewish state of Israel. Perhaps this was a planet of religious significance to the ancestral Orsonian faith, or it could simply be a bit of sparsely-populated land selected for its colonizing potential. In this version, Orsonians themselves would have gone through a cultural renaissance, attempting to replace their previous identities as laborers with a novel 'Orsonian' culture based on shared heritage/history/language/religion, etc. Following years of voluntary migration, the new planet would become the center of Orsonian culture in Cybusian space, focusing an otherwise diffuse racial group into an identifiable homeland. Admittedly I don't know the backstory of how Orsonians made it to earth, but perhaps this could have played a role as a launching-pad, or developed alongside the colonization of the solar system. I imagine the culture would be very distinct from the Orsonian Empire on earth (accentuated by the genetic differences you just laid out), and perhaps could even be part of a running debate over the true homeland of the Orsonian race.

Sorry for all the random, incoherent babbling, it's just an idea I've been thinking about. In my head, the Orsonians are inseparable from the history of the Cybusian Empire, and yet I know so little about where and how they live outside of Earth.

Redlight is more localized, mostly confined within The Crimson Wastes, but Redlight incursions might manage to slip the quarantine and make it far away.

If they are really old, and they thrive on taking from the populations of others -- they'd be concentrated to the peripheries of the oldest civilizations. The further out they go, the less they can feed or replenish their numbers with new members as there would be only the emptiness of the universe. The older a civilization is and the more expansive it's borders, the easier it is to take from without notice as such civilizations would be dealing with much larger borders than they can effectively secure and hardened fortified borders give way to collections of rapid-response fleets and units operating from networks of strong-points as power projection. While the security is more dangerous in these advanced civilizations, the day to day operations of a careful group would be safer operating against these advanced civilizations as long as they keep their threat level down to avoid being actively hunted in a massive operation.(More dangerous incidents when caught, less odds of being caught if they act smart and keep the heat low) This safety in obscurity and sheer distance would translate to further encouragement to stick with the same general targets.

Why would they abandon the tried and true to try their luck on a distant filament of the universe? (Where the opposite would be true, security is easier to deal with if detected, but would be harder to slip past undetected)

In response to international backlash against ORSOComm's initial public offering, the Imperial Council has released a press statement affirming that the Ministry of State Security no longer has any authority or control over the company, due to the recently-passed Media Deregulation Act. The Orsonet (Orsonian intranet) is in the process of being privatized and merged into the wider World Wide Web. International investors should no longer fear interference from Imperial agents, and the company is free to pursue its own policies in Orson and abroad.

Palomino has commented that "privatization does not equal absolution in the eyes of Wagain law. Even with an independent board of directors, ORSOComm and its subsidiaries remain a pillar of the Orsonian economy, and undoubtedly constitute a major source of revenue for the state's coffers. ORSOComm systems have many civilian applications, but they are also used to power the war machine which currently marches against our Malian and Mamaran allies. While Wagondia looks forward to a future in which strong bonds of trade can be restored with the Orsonian people, we will continue in the interim to persecute those who sanction genocide with their wallets."

Timmy City:

The Chief Minister of Foreign Affairs, alongside other Imperial representatives wish to meet with President Ba Ki-Moon and his staff in a diplomatic conference. The Imperial Council wishes to smooth relations over with the Timmian Confederation, after the debacle of the Interdiction Campaign and the billigerence of the Imperial Military nearly causing the breakout of hostilities. The Imperial government wants to ensure the Confederation that the dangee of Cybusian intervention has tamed these hardliners, and no further threats will be posed to life or commerce on the seas. Additionally, the Orsonians wish to present an economic deal to the Confederation as a means of furthering the "special relationship" between both nations.

As the world war currently stands in Middle East, Mamaran military defenses in the city of Baghdad, although fighting gallantly, will soon be totally overrun by Orsonian troops. The Imperial Military will occupy not only Iraq, but conquer the entirety of Mamaran-controlled Mesopotamia. The Orsonians are in the perfect position to seize the oil fields in this region and in the Arabian Peninsula, with the holy cities of Mecca and Medina projected to fall by the end of the year. The Imperial government wishes to allow Timmian investment into the captured oil fields (potentially allowing operations to drastically expand outside of the United Arab Emirates) and become a major exporter of petroleum to the Confederation, particularly Europe (which is already dependent on petroleum imports). In return, the Orsonians are asking for "full economic backing" in the war, which would include easy access to credit and loans for the government and major corporations, massive shipments of food and basic necessities to millions of troops on the front lines (greatly easing the logistical strain in these theaters), and smaller economic deals for various Orsonian products such as raw materials, consumer goods, and electronics.

The Imperial Council is effectively attempting to wage "economic warfare" against the Wagains, isolating and pricing them out of Timmian markets, as a direct counter to the Arsenal for Democracy. The Orsonians have long sought to become the "workshop of the world" and gain dominance in the Timmian markets, profiting lucratively as a result. With the European petroleum imports totally controlled by Orson and Santa Lucija (an Imperial ally), this would be a major step in that direction.

SITI has begun experimentation with solar-powered FTL Communications probes as a potential solution to the issue of the expense of repeatedly refueling FTL drives for communications probes for mass civilian communications. (One would only need to produce more probes so that communications can be constantly maintained while others are recharging)

SITI has also begun experimentation with wormhole generation and maintenance, which would allow for portals to be formed between the orbits of inhabited worlds to allow the interaction of each world's own communications satellite network with one another with traditional light-speed communications.

The Purchase Patriotically and Produce Patriotically campaigns are both meant to try to reduce Wagain reliance on foreign goods and trade, and try to lessen the impact of economic warfare. There’s also still considerable trade with the Cybusians.

The West Africa Confederate Navy has begun it's submarine offensive against the Orsonian warships assigned to make aggressive maneuvers against the Wagains, using the maneuvers' aggressive nature against an ally to identify the precise locations of said enemy warships to enable greater efficiency of tracking and targeting of said warships by submarines.

The Subs, however, are ordered to deploy a signal beacon before starting their operation on a timer delay to activate after the Subs have already dispersed to their attack positions(but before things start exploding) to signal to all nearby vessels that the Confederate navy is launching a military operation in the region. This step being to try and mitigate the incidents of Orsonian vessels thinking they are under fire by the Wagains.

Imperial Navy vessels in the region are ordered to be on high alert for Malian attacks and respond in kind. Large swarms of drones are being deployed to act as cover for warships and submarines, armed with missiles of their own. Point-defense will shoot down many of them, but it is hoped that at least some of the drones will be able to do damage, while also absorbing the bulk of laser, railgun, or missile fire and allowing the warships to make successful counterattacks. The navy is still making aggressive maneuvers wherever possible, stubborn in its conviction to intimidate the Wagains. Additionally, they hope that some Wagain vessels will be caught in the cross fire, causing an international incident between Mali and Wagondia.

The Wagain Admiralty will begin sharing the coordinates of all of its vessels in the African theater with the Malian High Command, effectively allowing them to pinpoint every friendly warship and auxiliary vessel in the South Atlantic. This will hopefully help to reduce accidental strikes on Wagain shipping, while also helping the Malians to track Orsonian vessels which have revealed themselves in an attempt to harass our ships. Our ships will also be transmitting coded messages on specific radio frequencies shared only with the Malians, identifying themselves as Wagain. Any submarine considering an attack should be able to receive this chatter and call off an accidental attack.

Confederate submarines are choosing to stay submerged, using mainly torpedoes against the Orsonian warships and using attacks from multiple angles and hit-and-run tactics to keep their own damage minimal. These torpedoes are using experimental charges designed to get more explosive power than traditional conventional explosives by cracking the seawater into gaseous hydrogen and oxygen and then blowing up those gas bubbles with a second delayed explosive, they thusly do not need to surface as their design is to blow up underneath enemy vessels rather than impact them directly. Dealing their damage through the high pressure vapor column caused by underwater explosions.

These subs seem to be older models, with the more advanced ones further out in other operations. If forced to surface they have only rapid-fire point defense guns firing swarms of small bullets at high velocities and for an emergency anti-ship weapon a simple extensible cannon that uses hydrogen and oxygen pulled from the water to propel it's rounds at very high velocities where the friction with the air will ignite the flammable and reactive metals used in the round to try and ignite the magazines/fuel tanks of enemy vessels after punching/melting holes in bulkheads and backup armor belts. (This design was picked for it's ability to carry more shots than a normal cannon with rounds that have their own propellant and for it's higher odds of actually igniting ammunition magazines and good odds of igniting fuel tanks with the reactive metals outputting oxygen as they burn. It's not particularly great against lasers though, as they are already aerodynamically unstable from the gas venting of them burning mid-flight and wouldn't be too difficult for a laser to push it over the edge to structural failure and breaking apart.. However that laser would need to be pointed rather low to aim at the trajectory of the cannon rounds)

They also, of course, have their anti-ship cruise and short-range anti-ship ballistic missiles that have been a standard of naval warfare for decades at this point.. Which the missile designs are fairly advanced as one might expect for the time period, but still not to any degree that would be particularly effective against laser defenses. (These generation missiles attempt to go for speed and a sort-of spiraling approach to try and maximize the change in angle relative to the target they make each second to try and out-speed the rotation speed of turrets. This would work for inexperienced crews, but anyone who knows anything about these missiles would know to ignore the missile and aim up as the missile by the nature of it's evasive maneuvering has to make it's final approach from overhead making it rather "by the book" to deal with.)

Their primary goal will be to attempt to escape and find opportunities to dive again if forced to the surface, although some may choose to charge the Orsonian vessels with their cannon and launching all of their missiles if they feel they won't get a chance to escape.

With additional intel from the Novo Wagondia, the Subs are further refining their approaches and attack plans as well as the moments of launching their attacks to minimize odds of friendly fire.

Hope y’all are having a good week. I’ve had the week from hell. Long story short, my MacBook stopped working and despite thinking I had everything backed up, turns out it wasn’t. After spending 7 hours running around campus trying to secure a loaner laptop (which Niner Tech, the on campus computer store, agreed to supply in 2017, but now they bluntly said they no longer do that. They also refused to help extract my data; I had to call a cousin in the school IT department for help!) and spending 84 bucks on cords I’ll probably never use again in my life, I managed to use a TV as an external monitor to back up my files, but then discovered that my thesis I’ve spent almost a year on, somehow reverted to a version from a month ago, with all my big edits since then gone. And because I’ve used my MacBook for the last three years, the Dell loaner I got from the library is...difficult to use since I have such little experience with Windows or this giant bulky monster that won’t even connect to my dorm wifi properly!
Gah. I have zero motivation to re-rewrite my thesis. And top it all off, my sister is feeling sick, and my resume was rejected with zero explanation as to why.
And that’s just yesterday.

Sorry to hear it, Cybus; that really sounds like a nightmare scenario. I have no idea what I'd do without my laptop, or even reliable wifi. I'm lucky enough to be able to rely on both, but of course all machines break at some point. If you haven't already, I would just explain your situation to the school and try to get an extension on the thesis, though obviously that doesn't stop you from having to re-write everything for a second time. Your summer is going to be a well-deserved break for sure.

I did. I emailed my thesis advisor and she said she wants a revised section of the thesis by tomorrow for evaluation. But, the professor who is in charge of my thesis class hasn’t replied, which is stressful.

I have my second draft, but every edit (all the big complicated important ones, in other words) since then somehow went missing.

Still no progress on the thesis. But I do have an amusing response to my nation or two from F7 to share;

“The Ravenelki Guard. They are basically the roman praetorian guard with a level of training rivaling that of idk, the Jedi from SW and access to hardware that would make the Marines from Warhammer 40k tremble.”

“How eldritch the nation is. Like, it literally helped me grasp the concept of the word. And viruses that turn beings into biomasses that can either mimic human forms or just become a BLOB, are very terrifyingly eldritch. The user also has crated a system of vampires that is the scariest I have ever encountered”

And this bit of praise that someone gave to the region as a whole!
“Your RMB RPs are very well-done and timeless! I like how there are a lot of efforted posts, and everyone knows what to post about and to talk about. Often times... personal experience says that 18 out of 20 times RMB stuff just happens to fall apart, so this is a cool exception. I should read about them all one day. ”

Eldritch does fit perfectly; I had to look it up, but anything related to Lovecraft is of course at home in the Cybusian world.

And what kind praise of the region! I think having most of our development take place 'in-house' (either on the RMB or over tgs) makes it a very forgiving yet innovative creative space. Any of us can come and go as we please, and contribute what interesting tidbits we want, without having to worry about if we're interrupting. Having spent several years away from forum RPing, I think it would be hard to go back at this point.
