Whats up with nationstate's population sky rocketing? I have never seen it so high; usually it has been around 40k-55k. Now it's up to 73k.

Didn't know you spoke Japanese, Pyong. I'm quite the amateur, but wouldn't that be "Mottomo kurai jikan ni hikari ga kagayakasu?"

Google Translate is a horrible Machine!!!

Canadian davsland

Out of curiosity what's wrong with Google translator? I use it all the time. Does it give wrong translations or is it something else?

"A WTF resolution is now open for debate"

Is there a WTF vote option? lol.

@ Canadian Davsland: Google Translate is good between English and other Germanic languages and not much else. I'm pretty okay at Swedish, and I've seen GT give some pretty bang-up translations of stuff I would have thought complex. A German-speaker has confirmed this with German. However, when it comes to more complex Germanic languages, like Icelandic, it doesn't do too hot. And then, when we come to languages that aren't at all like English, such as Asian languages, and especially Japanese, it does really lousy.

That's why I think it's worth it to learn a little bit about as many languages as you can. If you can just get the basic grammar down, you can take what GT spits out at you and correct it to a decent degree.

For instance, if Pyong knew:

1) Adjectives precede the noun they modify (like in English),
2) The "ni" particle indicates location or time,
3) -te as a verb ending is a special conjugation that, on its own, means an imperative, and
4) Japanese has SOV word order (if he didn't already know that; Korean is the same),

he would have been able to correct what GT gave him :) .

@Goddess Relief Office,

You just submitted a truly awesome idea :o

Yes, I have voted for that resolution already. Wonderful Paradise shall be free.

The Tribal Confederate of Hiresejnen: Is Google Translate good at Norwegian? I have been using it to learn that language and I hope I'm not getting it wrong.

Post self-deleted by South titania.

Btw Canadian Davsland , did you vote on the forums as well or just directly in the World Assembly? Because you see , I have to vote in the World Assembly based on the outcome of the poll in the forum (as WA delegate , my vote is equal to 54 ; i.e the no. of endorsements I've received from all WA nations here. It's a big responsibility, and 54 votes can swing the outcome of a resolution). So, in case you haven't voted on the forums, please do so.

And that goes for all WA members here , your participation is greatly appreciated.

It's decent at Norwegian, yeah. Just be sure to cross-reference with a dictionary if you're using it for sheer vocabulary; there are some words that mean different things in Norwegian but have just one equivalent in English. An example off the top of my head are "vite" and "kjenne", both of which translate to "know", but the former is for knowing facts, and the latter is for knowing people.

Pyongwangpyoichohwan

Hresejnen is Absolutly right, It's a Common thing for Thai people to go on Google Translate and watch how horribly it splurts our language.
But is DOES Translate, so single words is usually always correct (unless your translating like Thai where the'll be lot's of variations to the same word and GT will give you the most drasticly context-inncorrect one), but in Sentences, GT just doesn't understand the Grammer rules of the languages. And therefore the translations make little to no sense.

Google Translate no Baka!

They should just let WATSON (the new supercomputer that plays on Jeopardy) do the translation

Canadian davsland

The Shining Cartel of South Titania: I just vote through the World Assembly only. I did not know you can vote in the Forum. I checked and how do you vote? I guess the more votes a resolution gets the better. I guess.

Watson should do translations for me it would be easier for me.

"Google Translate no Baka!" = "The idiot of Google Translate" XD

And yeah, GT has troubles with more complex (see: not like English) grammar rules. It's pretty much useless in working with Icelandic because you have four cases and three genders, and GT just don't quite get it :P .

What's the third gender? Is it just neutral as in the English "it"?

Well, gender in linguistics doesn't mean gender as in boys and girls and whatever's in between. It has to do with how nouns are conjugated, and adjective agreement (and probably other words as well), so like you might say "Goðan daginn" good morning, but "Gott kvöld" good evening. Modern English doesn't have noun genders. But yeah, the three genders are masculine, feminine, and neuter, and it's impossible to tell just by looking at a word on its own what gender it'll be.

Basically it's a good reason to hate European languages, because just about all of them have at least two genders.

Bilge rat ronnie

If nouns conjugate, do they produce pronounds?

@Canadian Davsland,

Visit the World Assembly subforum at http://www.half-hp.net/yggforums ,you should see some topics that are open. But before you can vote, I hope you're registered on the forums and tagged as a WA member (you can't access the World Assembly subforum unless you belong to the WA). Anyway, open one of the topics and you should be presented with a description of the current resolution and 3 options at the top; For , Against and Abstain. Take your pick.

Canadian davsland

I'm not registered in the forums. So I can't vote in them and only vote directly through the World Assembly.

Canadian davsland

Woo Hoo! Canadian Davsland has over 100 million people. And that population will keep going up and up. Without affecting current policies set down by the government. All for our independent and glorious Davsland!

Davsland, then by all means..please do register :)
