Part 30: Our People’s War (Chapter 8: Operation Butter: Opening)

“I was there.” He would say afterwards, until afterwards became a time long devoid of laughter. “I was there when the King of Kings killed the falsehood.” It was a delicious conceit. And his comrades would chuckle at the sheer treason of it.

The story was a good one, for Freder would usually be the one to cajole him into telling it, for Freder was a joke, a man of mighty laughter and idiot tricks. And Rikor would tell it again, a tale rehearsed through so many retellings, it almost told it.

Rikor was always careful to make sure his audience properly understood the irony of his story. It was likely that he felt some shame about his complicity in the matter itself, for it was a case of blood spilled from misunderstanding.

Two kings, a great tragedy that the old order became implicity in the tale of the Kings greatest murder.

But the death of Gods and Demons was a myth.

He remembered the world breaking around him.

A stranger in a foriegn land, under a flag of red for blood, white for purity, and black for death. The God’s claimed their dues.

It was a very confusing time. Everything happened at the same time, a kaleidoscope of images, conflicting and noisy. The sky burned. No…not burned. A storm. A storm not of this reality, devouring everything in its path.

Rikor, like so many, didn't believe it to be so apocalyptic.

A pain broke into his thoughts.

Intense.

Sharp.

He would, when he first retold the story, break out in a scream just at the memory of it. It was not on his side any longer. It was a wound more than flesh, blood, and raw heart. It mirrored the inhumanly strong and the long life of Gods.

The commander's grief was absolute…

Chapter 31: (Chapter 8: Operation Butter: Blessing)

Harsh edges of metal brought us round. From the port to the land, the biting wrist of tide crashed against our sailing ankles. We were in iron shuttles, chained to our fear. We feared not the weather, we feared not the sea, we only feared our fallen future. It was a place clad in stiff kilts, such as one might find in peace. In this space, this crowded space, the cheers of foriegn men and domestic cries filled me forever. The heartbeat of our ghostly shipmates ached and proved the falseness of any theory of reason.

Opening my eyes revealed the face of it. The face I last remembered before the axe had struck down in the darkest abyss. The flat of it, given that I still lived, was before the Paladin of Faith. Luxer. One of the last to be squired to the brotherly order upon this shift. He stood in vigor upon this vessel as the waves skimmed along the creaking hull and crashed into the moonless shades of black and blue.

Rikor disliked him, but admired his ruthlessness and he was utterly dedicated to the cause. It was hard to reconcile the clean-cheeked youth with the haggard soldier in front of myself. The years had not been kind to either. But a child? A child in the fires of night stood in merging flashes with memory and sight. What had not arrived was now present, a child unarmored by age or experience, clad in heavy sleeveless robes of dark green and red, embellished only with the brotherly flame and symbol on his left breast.

A downward-pointing sword flanked by wings touched my shoulder. A thick of white thread danced from one to the other as the boy spoke. There I sat in a chamber just a few moves in shadow. Several, maybe more. Time is difficult to recall such trivial matters in this part of the story.

Red eyes gleaned inside his black hood, a small child's face stared down at me. A mysterious guardian, a heartbeat letter. It was all the same as I rested upon my knees against the thick forearms of iron and bolted steel that made our home.

The nebulous grip, blinking against my shoulder before it broke out of effort and focused on the next man beside me. He was shaking. His hands were making fists and unclenching. The follower, he confessed in his twisted expression. The child above knew what was the sign, a sign of striking lighting that protested all innocence.

“I did not summon the storm, brother.” Said the soldier as his eyes turned to look at the brother in robed green.

That voice. A chilled voice that knew what the storm was that had engulfed them and their world.

Luxer shook his head, eyes fixed upon the man. “Your thoughts twist you in two, bother. Remember the prayer.” He said.

It was odd, I thought. For what was to happen and what has happened. Therein lies a lesson, even as it raged across our world, I think, it too was hidden in knowledge. Knowledge only has power when earned, not freely imparted. At first I questioned the nature of what I heard from the Borelians who joined our crusade. I question what I read, what I was learning. The Kings of Kath, the Kings of Spokane, they had works to protect for a reason. A reason I was not privy to know and yet, I had become obsessed.

But now, soon. Our war was to come and with the Child who spoke to us soldiers like he was a waiting one of the nephilla, we too welcomed the form by its true name.

And with that, my words began to speak;

"The battle rages towards the wall. Each moment blaring a deafened call. The enemies lay in wait ahead. The bodies around us stink of the dead. Each step forward brings us to line.

The strength behind us, holy and divine. The King's light drives us forth. and the Titans of God shall end this war!

Cogs and bolts, and ancient lore. Fashioned fearsome engines of war. Those it defends, in fear, shall adore. as its guns leave nothing but gore.

Nothing can withstand its steps. as it leaves behind a path of death. Forts and tanks are reduced to wrecks. Its foes: nothing but mere specks.

Tremble in its stride, as the crust cracks and breaks. Its warhorns blare, the air then shakes. Its cannons burst like the sun in its wake.

Woe to our foes as everything quakes. Blessed by priests of steel. Forged in the fires of zeal. Immortal armor of the King's will.

None shall oppose as they fulfill!”

And so we too became the Saint of Kilian Velikoye.

You turn on DolpNow and go to the News Section.
"Hi there! I'm Theresa Scott and this is DolpNow. There was an attack on a base in Turtle Bay, Lalani Loha. The attack caused 214 casualties and 16 injuries. Here's Lila Weka with more. Lila?"
It switches to Lila with the Parliament building in the background.
"Yes. Hi Theresa. The situation in Turtle Bay is very bleak right now. Many of the troops were captured by the Spokanite forces. The president called an emergency session in Parliament which led to the declaration of war on Spokane."
You turn it off and go about your day.

Chapter 32: (Chapter 8: Operation Butter: The Invasion of Spokane)

“Illuminate him, my son. Spare all you can.” The order, notwithstanding the avengement of blood, shall decimate the elite murderers and bring the imposter to the mistake of Kings. A barren throne, made with war upon brethren.

It was late evening, but the sky was saturated with light. A phototropic landscape of high clouds and beautiful sun. For the spectral shapes swarm high in the atmosphere, a swirling mass of charting brief, zodiacs with beams of light.

At the ground level, around the wide open basalt platform that formed the skirts of the outer docks, gunfire streamed through the air like horizontal rain, hosing coils of tracer fire that dipped and slithered heavily like snakes, die-straight zips of energy that vanished as as they appeared, and flurries of shells that were blizzarding hail.

Downed aircraft, destroyed trucks and cars, many of them crippled and burning, littered twenty square kilometers of the landscape as black figures paced slowly across the limits of the city. They were shaped like armored men, and trudged like men, but they were half a dozen of the kath elite machines of war, dawned in soot black uniforms of the Seabattalions.

These troops flooded forwards into a breaking wave as the barely trained national guard and even metropolitan police force of the city tried to hinder what was an unexpected and large scale operation. Something the Seabattalion tried to facilitate in order to allow Kath-Borelian operations against the howling ogre-foes before them.

Rikor himself was part of the 22nd Sea Battalion and now, supported by the 14th Mechanized and the 2nd Rostok Rifle Battalion, moved forward across the skirt and the city as detonations bursted along outer city bridges and nearly 30 kilometers north. This was the work of the Military Mobile Infantry. It was evident, maybe not then due to the rippling fire balls among the trees of dark brown smoke, but each blast uddered the ground with a gritty thump.

The shower of concrete and dirt was an after curse, for the assault craft of the second wave began to land and swept in over the beaches as the first wave did, this time bringing heavy equipment that showered enemy positions in lifting smoke clouds. Energetic vortexes.

Every soldier clicked as one as radio chatter was as frequent as gun fire. Snapping voices, chopping back and forth, their tonal edges roughened by the transmission quality as the first taste of mass war filled the skirmishes and scraps, but nothing resting as air power punished the maintained defender, keeping their strength whetted.

Oh it was glorious.

Well. It should have been glorious.

A hard, unstintingly slog to dislodge and overthrow a bestial empire.

They had their back broken now and they kicked over the emperors of revel fires. The commander had won the field through the employment of his favorite, practiced speartip thrust to tear out the throat. Had the commander directly struck, the direction of the defense would be unsheathed by borelians not kath.

Even if, for the purpose, the edge of blade must be sharp on both sides, the clay-built ramparts and thickets of mud the spokanites called defense saw a barbaric brawl of determined blades and body strength. Be it a child armed for his life or be it a zealot who believes his command coterie, leaving the enemy headless and without direction.

This was modern warfare.

A modern war in a civilized place.

This was man against man, inside a monolithic precinct of cultured people, Rikor shot people his government called friends just early this year. In his horror, the enemy possessed ordnance more than rifle fire.

For what can one say when you see the body of a father trying to protect his family?

POV: The Presidential War Room in Kota Sotto, 22 August 2022
A map of Spokane and the Dapidran (Suriya) Sea is shown to the President of the Confederation by Chief of Staff Randall Hekicem Siunhavati, who shows the Suriya Sea east of Medical Lake under the control of the SBR Navy with divisions of the SBR Army containing 250,000 men at standby to board high speed rail transports at a moment's notice. The map also shows portions of Spokanite air space under the control of the coalition air forces.

News enters the room of the success of several missile salvos over the past few days that either took down or rendered air defenses throughout eastern Spokane up to 150 miles from the border useless against incoming fighters or bombers, let alone paratroopers, amid massive power outages in the region. Several army bases were hit and Siunhavati claims that up to a thousand Spokanite soldiers were killed in the strikes while assuring no civilian casualties.

On 18 August, a Spokanite air force squadron of 76 fighters was detected just over the eastern border by the squadrons of the light carriers Patigayun and Liaubatan along with other fighters, resulting in a dogfight over the Dapidran (Suriya) Strait in which the more advanced Visayan fighters won and shot down 33 Spokane jets, albeit with 18 losses of their own. Another dogfight was recorded between 64 Spokanite fighters and 56 Visayan ones on the 21st, with another Visayan victory.

The Chief of Staff then presents a plan to the President on authorizing the landing of up to 25,000 Visayan paratroopers in the Spokane border region to begin the landing phase of the conflict. They would begin to take key border towns, army bases and securing major pan-Borealian highway border checkposts ahead of a larger landing force slated to land on the southeastern coast before the start of September, which the President authorizes to start effective Wednesday.
