OOC: The Rules of Zemlya, FAQ

The Rules of Zemlya

  1. Our region is modern tech, and human only, though near-future tech is tolerated.

  2. Flags must be at a ratio of 1:2, and must not use the tacky "ripple" effect. You may request a new flag design, or a redesign of your current flag from Euraziya. Be as specific as you can!

  3. Nations names must be nation-esque. This means no numbers (Nationland69), or government types in nation names (that appear as The Republic of The Greater Nationland Republic, or The United States of Nation Empire).

  4. Posts on the Regional Message Board (RMB) are in-character. If you are posting out-of-character, please use the "OOC:" tag before your post. The "IC:" tag is only required if a post contains both out-of-character and in-character content. Please do not spam the RMB with idle chatter, as this pushes RP posts into oblivion before anyone can see them, and appreciate the effort taken to write them. Please make any OOC posts meaningful if they are necessary; "hey guys what’s up” is not. If you have questions, use telegrams. The same goes for your application of national information.

  5. Out-of-character, we ask that you refrain from any forms of oppressive speech. If your nation is in-character fascist and oppressive speech is tastefully in-character, and does not breach the site rules, do as you must.

  6. If you choose land on the map that is within an active player nation, consult them first via telegram. If they agree to RP your independence, great. If not, you will have to choose another territory. View the Grand Index of Zemlya to see which nations are players and which are NPCs (Non-Playable-Character nations).

  7. If you wish to have a political, religious, philosophical, or any other type of debate that is likely to attract attention, please keep it to telegrams.
OOC posts should be used sparingly and are not to be used for lengthy conversations about whom has the superior ideology. Especially since we all know communism will prevail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where the hell am I?

  • You're in Zemlya, a sort of alternate reality version of the Earth where socialism has the upper-hand in the cold war, and that cold war is one in which the West are the Socialists and the East are the capitalists. You'll get the hang of it.

What year is it?

  • In Zemlya, we use the Holocene calendar; we're the current Gregorian year +10,000. Therefore 2018 becomes 12,018 (12'018, 12018, or your own preferred format). Using the calendar is not compulsory, but is standard usage across Zemlya now. Your date system could count how many years it was since your leader had the best kebab in his whole life, if that's your thing.

Who are the International Superpowers? What can they do? Can I become one?

  • At the time of writing, the international superpowers are Euraziya, Nuevo meshiko, Hallorania, and Yuzan. As international superpowers these nations are essentially the big four powers in Zemlya,
and hold a lot of influence in RP. OOC, they have full administrative permissions for the region because they are trusted, and have been around since the earliest iteration of Zemlya in 2013 (two regions, the International Union of Workers' States and Dar al Salaam). They have the right to their own news headlines in the World Factbook Entry, and they are administrative nations of their respective international organisations (Codeco, SCE, and WCO). If you want to become one, there is no application or process so to speak. If you are with us for long enough, and are active and at the very least not too annoying, you'll probably be given the title.

What type of posts should I write?

In Zemlya there are typically five types of posts people write:

  • News Articles - These are your typical short posts, used to get things going while developing the lore of your nation to some extent. Either from the views of your own state media, or independent media that exists in your nation (E.g.: Euraziya only has the state media Gazeta, while Nuevo meshiko has independent media ranging from the professional, pro-government Meshik Times, to MushFeed, which is essentially a tabloid barely worthy of being used as toilet paper in Euraziya). It is up to you what happens in these news stories, be creative.

  • Government Statements - More simplistic than news stories, these posts are typically short statements about a specific policy, legislation, or foreign policy action that your nation will undertake. They can include quotes from government leaders, officials, etc. They are short and sweet and give other players more information about your nation to work with when they consider diplomacy with you.

  • Character Posts - The good stuff. These are some of the longer posts we should expect. In these posts, you will be writing essentially a short story involving actual characters, their thoughts, feelings, and interactions with other characters. This is where you get a chance to really show off your leader's personality, the different players in government, conflicting motives, or even just what the average citizen thinks about life in your nation.

  • Speeches - Think of these as a mix of Government Statements and Character Posts. They are government announcements, in the format of a character post. They can be used to convey the emotion, or charisma of your national leader (or lack thereof).

  • Collaborative Posts - The really good stuff. These are posts where two or more players co-ordinate with each other to create lengthy Character Posts together, typically split into several posts and posted by all participants. These posts give characters owned by different players the best chance to interact on a personal level, to see whether they like, or dislike each other, whether their motives align or diverge. These are the best posts can get in Zemlya. Extensive collaborative posts will be posted in the NationStates forum for posterity, with a preview being posted on the RMB.

What territory can I have on the map?

  • Wherever you fit best, honestly. If you want part of an existing player nation, or a nation that is under the influence of a player nation via an international organisation, you must contact them beforehand. Euraziya is in charge of the map and will not add your territory without confirmation from the player nation that you have seceded from. In addition, your independence RP must be concluded and your nation recognised before your territory will be added. Anywhere you take, you must be considerate of the existing lore of Zemlya. As always, please ask Euraziya for lore-related questions.

Can you make me a flag?

  • Absolutely.

Can you make me another flag? I got bored of the last one.

  • Absolutely not. Flag creation takes time, patience, and skill. If you want to change your flag on a routine basis, do it yourself. Send me a copy for the Grand Index and the Flag Map if you want the changes made in the next update.

What is the Grand Index?

  • It's basically the Wikipedia of Zemlya. It has information pertaining to every single nation in our world, as well as details about international organisations, treaties, and characters.

Why is it so quiet? Is the region dead?

  • Kinda. We'll see.

I want a massive territory and to take over the world, can I?

  • Probably not, but you can try. Yuzan is. Euraziya is doing well. Nuevo meshiko goes about it more subtly. Doing so however depends on the consent of other player nations. Remember we are a realistic region; so you're not going to forge an empire overnight. Usually, there is a bit of negotiation involved with other players. But by all means, give Euraziya pretext for "liberation" or Hallorania an excuse to "keep the peace".

Why do I keep seeing the letter Ö?

  • Something something "culture" something something Nuevo meshiko is a linguistics nerd.

I don't really know what's going on, please help?

  • We're aware that the lore of Zemlya can be a bit overwhelming, but the most recent developments can be learned by browsing the regional message board. However, if you have any further questions about more complicated things, just send a telegram to Euraziya or Nuevo meshiko.
