Foreign Intervention: Plague, the Raj, and Revolution(1610-1747)

After the 1st world war, Ulutors power and influence began to grow tremendously. While not quite as much in military might, its economic position in the world boomed. While Ulutorian generals had spent time observing armies fighting in Warria and Roma Atlantis, and its Admirals observed naval battles between the Calcaterran Federation and the Nedporenian Empire, its merchants had been building new trade relationships. Its merchants sailed around the world, and the world's merchant came flocking to Ulutor for its spices. However, there had never been these many foreigners from outside the Monsoon marketplace, or more commonly called the Ulan ocean trade. So in 1689, as usually happens, disease followed. Specifically from Namor, an outbreak of the Redskin Plague in Bolivant.
Named after its effect on the body, the Redskin plague heated the skin similar to sunburn. The new interconnected empire spread the disease and it quickly killed off 1/5 of Ulutor's population. During this plague, Emperor Nelsonus the 5th cut off all trade in order to contain the disease and prevent its spread to other nations. This cut off Ulutors spice trade from the rest of the world. The worst of the plague was over by early 1715, but by then the damage was done, 11 million people died from the plague in those 26 years.
Meanwhile, Anthacia more than any other country was trading for Ulutorian spices. They cared little about the knowledge of the plague, as they had already developed a resistance to it. But when the spice trade was cut off due to chaos in Ulutor, Businessmen in Anthacia began to panic. Quickly they clamored for 'stability in the market', and its citizens yearned for a return to normality. So on April 28th, 1715 Anthacia sent out a military expedition to Ulutor to secure a spice supply. However, when they arrived they found a country that was in crisis. So many navy men were sick that, Ulutor could barely put out a fleet. So Commander Willam Johnson of the military force made a decision, to seize all of Ulutor for Anthacia. As Marines stormed through the empty coastal cities, the Imperial family went into hiding at the behest of its Generals. Within 1 year all of Ulutor was under Anthacian rule.
When word reached Anthacia, there were mixed reactions. While many thought that this was a miracle windfall for economic development, some thought that Commander Willam Johnson took too much liberty with his actions. At the end of the day, Anthacia decided upon making the new Colony a Semi-autonomous area, run by a military governor seeing as the new occupying force was already meeting resistance from a very angry populous. It was called the "Anthacian Raj of Ulutor" and the 'natives' did not like it.
Military crackdowns on a number of resistance factions persisted until 1740 when a lull in rebel activity encouraged the Anthacian government to create a Congress of Natives. It provided a number of developmental laws that would help the nation modernize later, but often its decisions, like creating its own standing defense force were overruled by the Military governor. Although the Native Congress helped create greater stability, all hell broke loose in 1746.
It was that year when the future Emperor Aremial Ulutorius arrived in Northern Ulutor proclaiming himself the son of Nelsonus the 5th. He brought with him the old men of his father's regimes, who were there to give his claims legitimacy. He began roaming the north speaking of the horrors of the Anthacian rule, which was largely focused on extracting resources and never attempted to rebuild Ulutor. Or at least the parts Anthacians didn't live in. Enough people believed his claim and were taken in by his oratories, that he could muster a small force of soldiers. He proved himself Emperor to the populous when he lead the remainder of the Ulutorian army to a victory over Anthacia at Ankara. Where 1,000 troops ambushed an Anthacian force of 5,000. These events timed poorly with an economic recession in the Anthacia. This event combined with Aremials growing following, and list of victories over the Anthacian army, ended with Anthacians deciding to leave Ulutor.
Not knowing of this decision, Aremial called upon the citizenry to create him 'a navy so large, one could confuse it with the sea itself' so that Ulutor could continue its war of liberation, years of labor would have a small portion of the fleet built by 1749 and the rest built by 1752. By the time the 1st parts of the fleet were constructed, Aremial quickly took the rest of Ulutor under his flag, which is now our modern flag, different from the wreath and x of the past. After his reconquering of Ulutor, he chased after the Anthacian fleet. Fighting them at the battle of the Burdan Isle, and winning decisively in his first encounter. Anthacian admirals, mostly busy elsewhere, were now called back to the homeland, and then sent to fight Aremial's small fleet of hastily made seacraft. After a defeat at the Battle of the Hudagar Island, Aremial chose to wait until 1751 to continue fighting head-on. Instead, he would raid Anthacian fleets until his fleet was nearly finished.
Finally, in May of 1751, Aremial saw 3 quarters of his "Grand Iris Fleet" assembled and set off to Anthacian shores. He rushed his fleet into the Malaccan Strait, and there he fought the Anthacian navy. Fighting was fierce, and the 2 navies clashed against each other. But ultimately the experience of a seasoned veteran won out, and Anthacia held to the line in the waves.
Anthacia, now having a victory over Ulutor, opened negotiations knowing that the war was pretty much over. The resulting deal, the Treaty of Argana of 1753, agreed that Ulutor and Anthacia would freely trade spices and Anthacia would pay a small reparation for its occupying of Ulutor and would recognize the Empire of Ulutor as a sovereign state. Bad blood would quickly be dulled for the time being between the Nations in part due to the lucrative spice trade. After all, money talks.
36 years of occupation and 6 years of war yielded many changes in Ulutor. For example, the influence of Anthacian culture on Ulutor can still be seen today. In things like the popularity of Potatoe crisps (Called French fries in Anthacia) and less respectable thing like the Slur for Ulutorian 'Redskin'. The Ulutorian favor for Empires and a huge hulking navy. But most of all, the Parliament. Before the Raj, Ulutor practiced absolutism. But the popularity of the masses at the Congress of Ulutor during the Raj and a growing population boom after the Raj encouraged Aremial to create another branch of government, Parliament. Which helped to create our modern government form, even if Parliament had no significant power yet. It was a huge step forward, and the building blocks for democracy in Ulutor.
