Interview with Chatalhoyuk

Published May 2017

A person of many talents: explorer, world traveller, ambassador, writer. Chatalhoyuk. He’s a busy person, even when away from home. I had a chance to sit down and talk with Chatalhoyuk recently in Europa. We talked about NationStates, which regions have moved them the most during their travels, scary moments, and times of good laughs.

"Take wrong turns. Talk to strangers. Open unmarked doors. And if you see a group of people in a field,
go find out what they’re doing. Do things without always knowing how they’ll turn out." – LinkXKCD 267

We hope you enjoy this interview with explorer Chatalhoyuk.

Orioni: Hello Chatalhoyuk. Thank you for taking the time.

No problem! What questions have you got for me?

Please help us get to know you. Can you tell us something about yourself?

For one thing, I really love world geography and world history. I love to make maps and I am also interested in human geography.

What inspired you to travel?

When I first created this nation, I went to ASEAN REGION and I stayed there for about 2 months. ASEAN REGION was filled with all sorts of nations from political-minded to culture loving. This then invoked a thought into me: There are probably other regions out there with people just like this one and probably much more! And my travels proved correct!

There are several travellers and wanderers in NationStates. Have you run into any of them?

I haven't run into any of them ever in the same region. However, I do know two others: Mount islandia and Milourian nomads

What has the experience been like so far in other regions you have travelled to and from?

Each region was different, in good and bad ways. Some regions, most notably United Sodality of Sovereign States and this one, were very welcoming. Other regions, like Confederacy of Allied States were not so welcoming. Out of all the regions I've been to, only a few were actually active (as in at least 15 posts in 24 hours). It is very interesting to see how different regions function, and the styles of RP and regional life each one has. The best part of my travels was all of the different types of nations I encountered and finding out about their cultures and ideas.

What about hospitality? Are players generally accepting of temporary guests?

Most of the regions I've been to were very accepting. The rest were neutral. I've never been to a region yet that did not want me (banned me). I have been banned from one region due to a miscommunication but that was resolved.

Are there any plans for creating a NationStates travel guide?

I will definitely share stories of my travels with you when I move on to my next destination. For now, I will enjoy my time here in Europa.

How do you decide which region to go to next?

There are many ways I do this. One of the most common ways is by checking out the featured region of the day. If the featured region doesn't really seem that good, I usually look through the embassy regions of my current region and pick one of those.

Last question. Do you have any advice for other players who may be inspired by your travels?

Don't be afraid to explore new places and experience new cultures and values. Participate in an RP for a couple weeks. Get to know other nations and make new friends. Write about your experiences.

Thank you for your time. We hope you enjoy your stay here in Europa. You are, of course, welcome to stay as long as you like. Please accept this postcard as a sign of our appreciation.

Thank you very much! I love the postcard.
