The 2026 Mariterian general election was held on August 16th, 2026, with results having only came out on September 20th, 2026. It has been held under the plurality voting system, and is the first election in the country's history.
Background
The nation has been grappling with its own identity and wars between ideological factions, having never had a democratic system of government until unification recently. It has been led by the "Invisible Hand." Despite its benevolence, people questioned its legitimacy. The nation has been grappling with key issues like popular sovereignty, declining democratic metrics, social friction, and geopolitical relations.
Results
The presidential election has been a BASOTGODP victory, with Loki Goodman about to become president. Congress has been elected with no overall control in both chambers, with House members currently negotiating to choose a Prime Minister.
The results have been condemned due to votes taking a month to be counted. Despite the impressive turnout, the population has grown since then (5 million people were living in Mariteria during the election). As a result, some question the election's legitimacy.
Loki Goodman's victory has angered much of the population, who have preferred Mariteria be a powerful democracy rather than a militarist kingdom. His approval rating, which is already at a low 30% despite having not even taken office yet, has led him to be labeled as a controversial president.
People are also outraged that the Senate is an indirectly elected body with members serving for life, calling for reforms.
