Beginner's Guide to Yggdrasil

For those members that joined us recently, please allow me to give you a short introduction to Yggdrasil and the game.

Yggdrasil is a community of nations on NationStates. We aim to become a utopian community dedicated to prosperity and harmony. Originally founded by Mercadia in April 2003, the region was one of the first role-playing regions on NationStates.

Perhaps you have noticed that there are 'Issues' to select and approve for your nation. These issues are akin to government's policies. Once approved, they will be implemented the next day. Your choices will affect how your nation develops, whether it becomes a dictatorship, anarchy, or free-market paradise. They also affect your nation's major industries, economic rating, tax rate, civil rights and political freedoms. Different issues affect different aspects of your nation. There are hundreds of issues, randomly selected by the game and delivered to you twice per day.

Besides quietly approving issues, you may wish to establish diplomatic relations with other nations (making friends is a big part of the game!). This can be carried out in a number of ways: through sending telegrams to another nation in the game, by typing on the Regional Message Board (that is, the white typing area on the region), and by posting on the off-site forum. Telegrams allow communication between you and the other party only. Typing on the RMB and posting on the off-site forum allows more than one nation to see your message. Most role-playing in Yggdrasil occurs on the forum at http://www.half-hp.net.

Some ideas to start role-playing with other nations include: Creating a National Wiki page so others can see what your nation is all about, and reserving a spot on the Yggdrasil map in the Cartographic department (located at our forum). After that, you can read up on what's going on with other nations and join their role-play, or start a thread yourself and wait for others to join in. Examples of good role-playing include exchanging embassies and signing treaties with your neighbors; starting or joining ongoing economic, scientific, and sporting activities; or developing intrigues or crises within your nation so others can respond to them. Conversely, examples are bad role-playing are things that could upset other players, such as declaring nuclear war without reason, and assassinating other players' leaders without checking with them. There are helpful threads in the forum where you can get tips and ideas to join in the role-playing. If you need help, there is also a getting help thread where you can ask questions and seek advise.

Nations are encouraged to join the World Assembly (or WA) and endorse the elected WA Delegate after gaining membership. The WA is like the NS-equivalent of the United Nations. Being in the WA means you can vote in resolutions that affect how your nation operates. Every time a new resolution comes to vote, your delegate will create a poll on the regional forum. Your input and vote in the poll will determine how the delegate casts the regional vote. If you are interested to introduce WA resolutions yourself, be sure to read the WA Guide on the forum and contact others if you need help.
