Indigenous Populations

The Indigenous peoples of Buffalo and Assiniboia include the Anishinaabe, Nakota, Nehiyaw, Niitsítapi, and Métis nations. Though small in number, Indigenous people are culturally and politically significant in the Republic. Because of the Constitutionally mandated structure of the Council (1§3.4c), affording one quarter of seats to representatives of Indigenous peoples, their collective voice can be a powerful one in setting the course of the government. These are the proportions of the population in the cities who are Indigenous:
  • Winnipeg: 12%

  • Saskatoon: 11%

  • Regina: 10%

  • Lethbridge: 7%

  • Red Deer: 7%

  • Edmonton: 6%

  • Calgary: 3%

Within rural areas, 10% of the people are Indigenous.
