Government of Aeshar

The Legionary Republic is a unitary democratic republic with a heavy military influence.

Most day-to-day affairs are handled by the Commissar-General (usually abbreviated to CG), who acts as the head of state and government. The CG has direct command authority over all government departments (known as commissariats). However, the CG is limited to a single consecutive 3-year* term, and any standing orders they give have the same duration (ensuring that a different CG will always review said standing orders).

Long-term policy, including the creation of permanent law, is handled by the Executive Council. The Council consists of 16 members elected for 4-year terms, with elections staggered so four members are up for election each year. As with the CG, Councilors may not serve more than one consecutive term. However, it is not uncommon for a former Councilor to stand for election again a year or two after completing one term. In addition, the Council elects the Sergeant-At-Arms, who chairs sessions, calls for votes, and acts as tiebreaker. The Sergeant-At-Arms is required by law to be a non-commissioned officer, and is usually a soldier with an exemplary record.

*The Aeshari year is 1.4 standard years.
