The Order of the Sovereign Escorial or the Sovereign Order of the Escorial?

The Order of the Sovereign Escorial, sometimes written as the Sovereign Order of the Escorial, or the Order of the Escorial, Sovereign, is a sovereign organization spread around the world.

The mix-up of the name is due to the specific variation of Spanish used in the order, which has lead to confusion in the Spanish speaking world. In the Order's Spanish, the official names have been:
La Orden del Escorial Soberana, and La Orden del Escorial Soberano.
- La Orden del Escorial Soberano translates to the Order of the Sovereign Escorial. The Escorial is therefore what is "Sovereign"
- La Orden del Escorial Soberana translates to the Sovereign Order of the Escorial. The Order of the Escorial is therefore what is "Sovereign". Confusion arises here, as the Escorial Order's Spanish style places the adjective "sovereign" after the full "Orden del Escorial", whereas standard Spanish would place the adjective "Soberana" after "Order": "La Orden Soberana del Escorial". Both versions translate the same: The Sovereign order of the Escorial. However, Spanish-speaking governments around the world prefer "La Orden Soberana del Escorial", whereas "La Orden del Escorial Soberana" is preferred by the Escorial government.

There has, however, been confusion relating to the translation into English:
La Orden Soberana del Escorial, used throughout the Spanish-speaking world, translates to the Order of the Sovereign Escorial. La Orden del Escorial Soberana, however, has been mistranslated to "The Order of the Sovereign Escorial", with confusion arising from the gender of "Escorial". The Escorial is a masculine word, so the Sovereign Escorial would be "Escorial Soberano", not "Soberana". The style/grammatical preferences of the Escorial which place "Soberana" after "Escorial" cause an issue as in standard Spanish, it would indicate that the Escorial is sovereign and a feminine noun.

What is even more complicated is that The Sovereign Order of the Escorial (La Orden del Escorial Soberana) and the Order of the Sovereign Escorial (La Orden del Escorial Soberano) are both names that are used, but refer to two different overlapping legal entities. The Sovereign Order of the Escorial refers to the entirety of the Escorial Government and all Escorial citizens. However, the Order of the Sovereign Escorial, is used to refer to strictly the Escorial and the Escorial Government.

The two names are not interchangeable, and the issue is even more complicated when it is considered that the Sovereign Order of the Escorial (SOE) entails an entity that has an important distinction from the Order of the Sovereign Escorial (OSE). The SOE includes Escorial citizens, but excludes the Escorial. The OSE, on the other hand, includes the Escorial and excludes the citizens. Thus, the issue is that the SOE has a permanent population yet no territory, and the OSE has territory but no permanent population. [This has to do with the Escorial Hierarchy: The government, which is headquartered at the Escorial, is what leads the Order. The Government at the Escorial hold Sovereignty based on their Papal and international Recognition: The Sovereign Escorial. And yet, it is the citizens who make up the Order, not necessarily the Escorial building itself. Because of the lack of permanent territory, the government has been the holder of the sovereignty, which has transferred over throughout the different periods when the order was headquartered in different areas of the world. This is at odds with many interpretations of statehood, where sovereignty is held within the territory and population, not the specific government. ]

As it is clear, the issue of sovereignty is very important to the Escorial. And yet it has two names, neither of which imply that the order meets the criteria for statehood. The Escorial does not reconcile these differences through a new name, though, and instead claims that the Sovereign Escorial holds sovereignty for the entire Sovereign Order and the Sovereign Escorial.
