Basketball - Women's Basketball

Format: Basketball is played by two teams of five players on a hard indoor court, with each team looking to score by shooting the ball into a basket. A successful shot from outside the three-point line is awarded three points, a successful shot from inside the three-point line is two points and a successful free throw following a foul is one point. A highlight of the sport is the famous dunk which is made at the end of a fast-paced offensive plays. Olympic Basketball is played over four 10-minute periods.

Format: An Olympic Boxing match for both men and women lasts three rounds, each of three minutes. Five judges sit at the side of the ring. They watch the bout and individually award points for what they deem to be successful hits. A match can also end if a competitor receives three warnings (penalties) and is disqualified or if a competitor is unable to resume a fight within ten seconds, in which case they are considered knocked out (‘KO’).

Format: The Madison is a relay race performed by two-rider teams over 200 laps (50km) for men and 120 laps (30km) for women, although only one rider is “in the race” at any time. Points are awarded during intermediate sprints throughout the race, though teams can also gain points by lapping the field (overtaking the slowest group of riders), or lose points by being lapped. The final sprint awards double points to the victors.

Format: Rowing involves propelling a boat using oars along a 2,000m straight-line course. Unlike canoeing, where athletes face forward, rowers sit with their backs to the direction of movement. The sport is broadly classified into sculling (single, double and quadruple sculls) and sweep (pairs, fours and eights) events. Sculling involves holding one oar in each hand, while in sweep events a single oar is held with both hands. Only the eights events feature a coxswain, who steers the boat, while the other competitions are coxless.

Volleyball - Men's Indoor

Format: Indoor volleyball is played by two teams on a hard court divided by a net. Each Olympic team is allowed up to 12 players, though only 6 play on court. The objective of volleyball is to send the ball over the net in order to ground it on the opponent's court, while also trying to prevent their opponent from doing the same. Rallies are a regular feature of the match and continue until the ball lands on the court or is hit out of bounds, in which case that team loses the point. Players require amazing power and reactions, with the ball able to reach speeds in excess of 130km/h.
