Refugia IFV: Factory Farming Ban

Factory Farming Ban

Proposal At Vote
Drafting Thread

Summary:

In Factory Farming Ban, the author is attempting to ban factory farming, specifically defined as an industrialised system of producing commodities from farm animal where the farm animals are kept in unhygienic or crowded spaces or where the routine use of antibiotics and/or growth hormones are used on the farm animals to alter the natural process of things. The author states that factory farming is almost universally considered cruel and inhumane, something that even IFVs pushing for voting against seem to agree with.

Opinion:

There’s a lot of talk going around right now about how the definition of this isn’t proper, or all-encompassing when it comes to factory farming, and that should be reason enough to vote against. I don’t really buy that, if I’m being entirely honest. The definition might not be as tight as it could be, but at the same time, there’s nothing in this proposal that stops future resolutions from coming in and tightening up some of the holes that might not have been seen by the author at the time of the initial draft.

I said in the thread that I’d love to see meat-eating be forbidden entirely, but that this was a good step in that direction. I stand by that, understanding full well my ultimate wish would never come to pass in the current state of the GA. Even so, this is an effective way to stop, if not all, then most factory farming that is happening in World Assembly member states, and if people believe in the right of animals to exist in a space where they can be comfortable, even if their lives will ultimately end for someone’s sustenance, I see no reason to vote against.

Recommendation:

As the resolution is soundly constructed and working toward a goal in line with our regional values, the Refugia Councillor of World Assembly Affairs recommends voting for Factory Farming Ban.
