EuroNews - March 2021 - Issue XXV

EuroNews surpasses another milestone with this 25th issue and we are eager to show you this fine collection of articles our staff was able to compose for you! So, what are you waiting for? It’s EuroNews time!

Dear Yahlia,

Yahlia, former Chief Editor of EuroNews

A lot of us probably know you for your long-awaited catch-up posts, others for your amazing flags, and some of the oldest for your Commissionership. In our opinion, your true legacy is EuroNews, a project you resurrected and directed for two years. In the last months, you had, for personal reasons, to withdraw from many of your duties in Europe including, amongst them, from EuroNews.
We cannot promise we’ll be able to keep it alive forever, but we will nonetheless try our best to keep up with the quality and the seriousness you embed in it and that now are our trademarks. We want to thank you for the awesome time we had during your leadership, for the amazing experiences you allowed us to have, and for the patience you had dealing with us (especially for the delays :3). This issue is dedicated to you, we hope you will like it.

Written with sincerity and love by the whole EuroNews staff

The flag of St Scarlett who won the election

Commissioner Competition
Like last month, but for some aspects even more, this election reserved us some surprises, starting with the unexpected declaration of candidacy of St Scarlett for the post. The other candidates were Libertandonien, Sicilian imperial-capitalist empire (from now on SICE for short), and Walfo. The fight was fierce and, at first, the results were not given for sure. Furthermore, differently from last time, all candidates took part in the Official Electoral Debate and a commentary of the election, specifically on the profiles and positions of the candidates, was made by Novgorod-Pskov through the Novgorodian Druzhýna.

The platform for the election of Libertandonien was rather simple: as stated in his electoral dispatch his main points were being “someone new” and experienced with the RMB. This rather simplistic take on the election was welcomed with a mix of surprise and, coupled with the low-profile approach undertaken by Libertandonien during the debate, distrust by many.

The proposals of SICE, mainly expressed in the Electoral Debate since he did not release a dispatch nor a telegram, were about a change in the enforcement of laws rather than an amendment of the statutes. Bringing forward a platform based on moderation, SICE, who was also strengthened by his performance during the debate, was considered the stronger candidate, prior to the candidacy of St Scarlett.

St Scarlett’s campaign, which was expressed in her electoral telegram and in the Electoral Debate, revolved around a change in her position on justice from a ‘lenient stance’ to a ‘moderately punitive stance’ reflecting, as she herself said, the will of the people. As further motives for her re-election, Scarlett brought up her greater experience and some ideas regarding a way to “better represent the RMB’s rules on the World Factbook Entry” and to develop “more detailed definitions of terms to the legislation”.

Walfo’s platform, in contrast, aimed at a huge renovation of the Moderation Committee and the expansion of officials in the Home Office to better deal with spammers and other troublemakers. Another point advanced, that sparked some resistance by the other candidates, was regarding endorsement and their value for the region as well as the rework of our recruitment policy. Probably the most controversial candidate, Walfo still represented the biggest threat to both SICE and St Scarlett and the most outspoken of the candidates.

As soon as the election started, St Scarlett and SICE jumped ahead of the others and ended the first day of the election with 24 votes each, again sparking a discussion on whether this election would end in a tie or not. Yet, on the second day, thanks to the campaign telegram wired both by St Scarlett and Walfo, this tie was broken and St Scarlett fled away from the rest of the candidates, while the Walfo and SICE, who did not release a telegram, just saw a small increase in their vote. Unlike the previous election, each candidate ran on his own thus prompting St Scarlett, who increased the gap from the others day after day, to end the election with the relative majority of 48% of the votes but still enough to win her 9th election.

Election results:
Libertandonien: 12
Sicilian Imperial-Capitalist Empire: 27
St Scarlett: 51
Walfo: 17

Total votes cast: 107

Roleplay Report
Another month, another month… of ideas! Let’s see what the wonderful minds of the Europeans crafted regarding their worlds and nations.

United engiresco released a new issue of his national newspaper! On the front page, news on geopolitics regarding China nonetheless.
page=dispatch/id=1507038

In the last few days, NorthPortugal released a bunch of awesome factbooks. Among the most interesting, the one on the national leadership is surely worth mentioning. Here it is!

Be very welcome!

This is a new factbook.

This factbook is to show the leaders within the Commonwealth of Nations.
There are federal monarchies and a federal state within the Commonwealth of Nations. Of course, there are positions that are hereditary and others that are not, in the case of federal states.
Many leaders are native to their land, but rarely is one not.

Of course this is a reboot of the old factbook, because it needed a new refit for this old factbook and now, after almost a year of been released, it will have a new face, plus new faces and new stories to tell. And after a long time, it now suffers a new update, to keep it with times and to present a new view of the Commonwealth of Nations, which will include the map of states, their flags and their leaders in a clean version of this factbook.

And, of course, enjoy the factbook.

The monarch's role is that of a leading figure in the state, but he has the power to revoke elections for a new parliament, a kind of stalemate to end corruption. But he can also act as Prime Minister if something happens to the government or the person in that position.
The current royal house is the Luso-British Royal House of Chaves, commonly known as the Flavian Dynasty, and this royal house that has governed since 1934, with the ascension of the King George III of the Luso-British Union.
Nowadays, it is govern by the Empress Cristiana I of the Commonwealth of Nations after the death of Her Majesty Empress Elizabeth II (1926 - 2022).

The position of heir is hereditary.
With House of Braganza dead in 1932, Manuel II did not appointed no one as his successor, as he had no children and it was too late to try. It took two years and a regency to make the House of Chaves the ruler of the nation, but at last, it had a King and a Heir, Prince Albert, which became King George IV. The heir automatically becomes Prince or Princess of Coimbra.
If no monarch has heirs, he may appoint someone from his royal home or from another royal home to succeed him, who is committed to the terms of the constitution.
The actual heir is Princess Inês of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The President of the Government's role is to rule the Commonwealth.
He is elected by universal suffrage in all federal states, from Canada to New Zealand.
The position is valid for 5 years and there is no limit on shifts for a president of the government. But if anything happens to the President of the Government, in the event of the government's death or fall, the monarch assumes power and remains until a successor is found to end the years that the previous one was elected.
The current President of the Government is Irene Maria Vaquinhas.

The role of a monatch in kingdoms/principalities within the Commonwealth is important, as they maintain order in kingdoms.
The position may be hereditary or not. If it is hereditary then it is because the line of succession is secure and continues to descend calmly. If it is not hereditary, then it is because the royal household has failed to obtain heirs and the monarch will have to choose a new monarch.
The only kingdom that is inherited by the imperial monarchs is the United Kingdoms of Portugal and Great Britain, due to the historical context of the region, since it is the only kingdom that has lived through generations and generations.

Kryss (officially Høyrød Kryss, Norwegian), is the capital of St Scarlett’s Kryss region and is often considered the religious capital of the island nation. Located on the West Coast of St Scarlett, this city is surrounded by a thick forest known as the Blood Forest (Blodskog).

With a population of just over 200,000 it is the country’s third largest city behind Rubin and Redbrook and holds major significance as the burial city of the nation’s patron saint, who founded and carried out most of her activities in the city during her life on the island and the birthplace of the first nationwide Matriarchal Council. Saint Scarlett’s Cathedral is a popular tourist destination for the city and is also a well known pilgrimage site for Catholic women from all across the world.

Due to it’s history with the patron saint, the city has a heavy cultural focus on women and is known for its heavy use of the Norwegian language, similar to other western regions in the nation.

Kryss is governed by the Red Mayor and the Crimson Council and is also home to the Council of Kryss, which governs the greater region of Kryss.

Etymology

The city is named for the crimson cross necklace Scarlett Espendottir wore around her neck in life, surviving today as a relic kept safe within Saint Scarlett’s Cathedral. Its official Norwegian name ‘Høyrød Kryss’ translates literally to crimson cross in Skarlagen Norwegian, though it should be noted that the standard Norwegian would be Høyrød Kors.

Due to the difficult pronunciation for English speakers, the word ‘Høyrød’ was dropped from the official English name with the city instead sharing its name with the region it is contained within, Kryss. There have been proposals to change its English name to Crimson Kryss/Cross or Hyrud Kryss but due to the prominence of Norwegian in the city none of these have been successful and Kryss has remained the preferred English name.

Until about the mid 1800s the city was sometimes known as Blodrød Kryss, with Blodrød (literally blood red) being another word for Crimson, however this name was never popular and fell out of use completely over time.

History

It is likely that some small town or village existed in the area before Espendottir’s arrival, however the settlement that would eventually grown into the city of Kryss was founded by the patron saint around 1666. Legends state that she had been present on the islands from around 1662, performing various acts of kindness and generosity all across the land, but founded the city as a hospice and base of operations after Norwegian authorities began appearing in major towns in an attempt to counter her efforts.

With many flocking here to hear Scarlett speak and to receive her help it quickly grew into a village and then a town, with its residents dubbing it Høyrød Kryss or Blodrød Kryss in honour of Scarlett’s famous amulet and her nursing practices.

Legends also state that the famous Blood Forest that surrounds the city sprung forth from the spilled blood of one of Scarlett’s patients. In reality it is likely the forest was planted by the citizens in order to create a barrier around the city and to make it harder to spot from afar.

After Scarlett was killed her body was buried in the town and construction began on a church that would eventually become the Saint Scarlett Cathedral, this is also where her necklace, and the city’s namesake, was placed and remains to this day. Her grave is the nation’s most holy site and is guarded 24/7.

A few decades after her death a monument was placed in the town centre in her honour, this is the Crimson across Memorial and it remains in its place to this day.

Throughout the rest of Skarlagen history the city remained a hub for anti-Norwegian movements but mostly kept this on the down-low, resulting in a flourishing population despite events occurring elsewhere in the nation and a sizeable Norwegian population, which led to to the region being one of the largest primarily Norwegian speaking areas in the country. In 1918 the first nationwide Matriarchal Council was established here, managing independence movements going forward but claiming its de jure capital to be Rubin.

During the war of independence, which occurred mainly in the East, many Skarlagens migrated to Kryss for sanctuary, which saw its population significantly boosted. It’s also a popular destination for Norwegian migrants due to its prominent use of the Norwegian language.

Geography

Kryss has an area of about 169 square miles and is located on the west coast of St Scarlett. Most of the city is away from the ocean but Kryss does have a port, Port Scarlett on its outer edge.

Being on the western coast, exposed to the harsh Atlantic elements, Kryss lies atop high cliffs around 30 metres high and isn't known for its beaches . On the sides that don't face the sea is the Blood Forest, with tree cover so thick barely any sunlight reaches the interior. The forest consists mostly of tall fir trees and is filled with nocturnal wildlife. It is one of the best places to see the Skarlagen Arctic Fox.

The harsh ocean winds give the city a very low average temperature all year round and snow is a common sight for the majority of the year.

Administration

Kryss has five districts, these are Scarlett District containing most of the cliffside areas, Hellig District where the Saint Scarlett Cathedral is located, Port District containing the city's ports and fishing communities, Residential District near the outer edge where the majority of home owning residents live and Central District containing the financial hub and administrative areas. Districts are responsible for a wide variety of public services, which include land-use planning, environmental planning, public housing, management and maintenance of local roads, and social security.

All five districts are administrated by the Red Mayor and the Crimson Council from Kryss City Hall which is located in the Central District.

Kryss also contains the majority of the Kryss region's government which, thanks to devolution, handles issues such as education and taxation in the westernmost region. All divisions of the national police force are controlled from Rubin, but the division that operates within the city limits is known as Scarlett's Angels and is known for angel wings logo, displayed prominently on every officer's back behind the word 'Police'.

The city is known as a Women's Party stronghold and tends to hold more conservative views reflecting those of the more authoritarian governments of St Scarlett's past. However, it is reigned in by the national government and is not an unsafe location for men to visit in any regard, it has also become subject to many new progressive laws imposed upon it by Rubin.

Kryss is the third most populous city in St Scarlett. With it's population standing around the 206,000 mark. While this population is not too impressive by global standards it has come a long way since the city's founding in the 1600s. The region saw a large population boom thanks to Saint Scarlett's presence and this grew throughout her years in the country and immediately after. It's thought the population was around 50,000 by the start of the 19th century.

The city grew further as the nation faced issues from Norway in the East, with many citizens fleeing west and reached 150,000 by the 1980s. Since relations with the mainland cooled many Norwegians, Swedes and Danes made their way to the city. The city has also seen an influx of Brits and Laverians, especially since strong relations were formed with those nations. Thanks to the Laver-Scarlett Treaty the Laverian population continues to grow rapidly.

Like the rest of the nation the vast majority of Kryssers were born in St Scarlett, around 89% in this city's case, or to Skarlagen parents. There are no official statistics on ethnic groups but it is assumed a large majority of Kryssers are white due to the nations they originate from and a lack of imperial activity in St Scarlett's past. Like with Rubin, people of African and Asian descent are not unheard of however, many of whom made their way to St Scarlett from the UK and USA.

As the religious centre of St Scarlett the vast majority of people living in Kryss are Roman Catholic, with the number estimated to be around 85-90% of the city's residents. The remainder follow a mix of religions such as Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, other forms of Christianity and many follow no religion at all. The only purpose built religious buildings in the city are churches, with the most prominent being the Cathedral of Saint Scarlett, with other religions finding home in smaller buildings or personal households.

While Kryss is often overshadowed by tourist hotspots like Rubin and Snowby, many Catholic pilgrims flock to Kryss in the warmer months, mostly women, in order to see the Crimson Cross of St Scarlett and to visit her grave. Gatherings are often seen at the Crimson Cross Memorial and flowers are left by the many visitors this monument sees. Most pilgrims and other visitors do not settle, but it is not unheard of.

In recent years, Kryss has ranked high in international surveys for its tourism industry, offering attractions for not just religious people but for everyone. Its snow covered streets make it one of the most photographed locations in Northern Europe and the Blood Forest is perfect for those interested in natural wonders. The city also boasts a prominent night life despite its more conservative nature, with many clubs and bars open 24/7.

Economy

Kryss's financial district is located in the centre of the city. The city's economy is based largely on timber and fishing, thanks to the natural resources at the city's edges.

Statistics for 2020 show that a small majority of the 140,000 workers in Rubin are employed in the service sector, especially transport and communications, trade, and finance, while around 12,000 work in the fishing and timber industries. The public sector workforce is around 60,000, including education and healthcare.

While no major companies have their headquarters in the city, many have minor operations. Vixen Inc has a long history of operating from the city and its main Headquarters were located here until Vixen Hus was completed in Rubin. In addition, city authorities have encouraged the development of business clusters in several innovative sectors, which include information technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, clean technology and smart city solutions.

Like the rest of the nation, Kryss has some of the highest gross wages in the world. This along with relatively low taxes has made St Scarlett an attractive location for both domestic and foreign labour. It is however also among the most expensive cities in Europe.

Tourism also plays an important role in Kryss' economy, attracting visitors due to the city's aesthetic beauty, natural wonders, religious significance, and locally sourced restaurants serving Skarlagen delicacies. Hotel capacity in the city is growing steadily. From 2018 it has been experiencing a large growth in international bed nights (total number of nights spent by tourists).

In 2018, it is estimated that city break tourism contributed to 1 billion vixes in turnover. 120,000 cruise passengers visited Port Scarlett in 2019.

Cityscape

The city's appearance today is shaped by the key role it has played as a religious centre for centuries, with Scarlett Espendottir symbology spread widely across the city. Kryss has a multitude of areas, each with its own distinctive character. Other features of Kryss include the abundance of natural features and the busy streets of the shop filled Central District.

The city's style has evolved over the centuries but remains mostly untouched by modern features such as glass-faced high-rises, with most buildings built in classical Scandinavian and Germanic styles. Church spires dominate the skyline, with each carrying its own distinct character.

Prominent buildings from the nation's older years include the 17th century Saint Scarlett Cathedral built in a gothic style, the 20th modernised factories and fisheries and the fancy Scarlett Theatre which dates back to the 19th century.

Kryss prides itself on its natural outskirts, and due to their links to the legend of Saint Scarlett herself, has made extensive efforts to preserve it and to carefully plan the collection of timber. The city also has strict rules on where the city limits can lie, with lots of planning permission required for those seeking to extend them out further into the forest.

The city's major landmarks include the aforementioned Cathedral of Saint Scarlett, Port Scarlett and Scarlett Theatre as well as the Blood Forest, Tomb of Scarlett Espendottir and Crimson Cross Monument.

Culture and Contemporary Life

As the religious capital of St Scarlett, the city has a heavy focus on Christianity and the patron saint, Scarlett Espendottir. This can be seen immediately in its numerous churches but also in the names of streets, shops, monuments, restaurants and more, with many displaying Espendottir's name to some regards.

The city's animal is the bat, as this was a known symbol of Saint Scarlett. An image of a bat in front of a dagger, another symbol of the saint, is also commonly seen around the city. As the patron saint of doctors, most hospitals make heavy usage of Espendottir symbology.

The city has many entertainment venues such as cinemas, libraries and museums, but its most famous venue is the Scarlett Theatre, a grand theatre decked out in red and gold decor. While it does not hold as much significance as the Erin Redwood Theatre in Erinwood, it is the main hub for live entertainment on the Skarlagen mainland, with many travelling miles to see a show here rather than in Greater Rubin.

The city's various clubs and bars provide a lively nightlife for those who prefer a more exciting experience. One of the most famous is Celeste's, a club famous for its neon blue appearance, a major contrast to the prominence of red in the majority of the city.

The city also has a well established culture of cuisine with many high class restaurants serving up Skarlagen delicacies to all who are willing to try them.

The city features a well respected university, the Espendottir University of Kryss (EUK), where current matriarch Kari Erland herself once studied. This university draws in a few foreign students and helps to boost the youth culture in the city.

Transport

Kryss's transportation is largely undeveloped, as its smaller size makes major transportation unnecessary. The city is connected to others via train-lines and motorways but there is no metro system within the city itself and roads are lacking.

Scarlett Espendottir International Airport, opened in 1972, is St Scarlett's third largest airport, located about 20 miles outside the city itself. It is connected to the city centre by a bus service.

While the city's road network is not incredibly well developed it does service its purpose, allowing commuters to move about the city in order to get to work or the shops. The car is the third most popular form of transport within the city, beat out by bicycles and foot traffic. The city also has somewhat significant cruise ship traffic, handling around 60 cruise ships in 2018.

Like with other Skarlagen cities, Kryss is incredibly bicycle friendly, with bicycles almost outnumbering its inhabitants. In 2019 some 20% of all working or studying city-dwellers cycled to work, school, or university. With half a million km covered every working day by Kryss' cyclists (including both residents and commuters), and 75% of Kryssers cycling throughout the year. The city's bicycle paths are extensive and well used, boasting cycle lanes not shared with cars or pedestrians, and sometimes have their own signal systems – giving the cyclists a lead of a couple of seconds to accelerate.

Twin Towns

Kryss is twinned with the following cities:

  • Bergen, Norway

  • Florence, Italy

  • New York City, United States

  • Reykjavik, Laver Island

  • Sarpsborg, Norway

  • The Vatican, Vatican City

New skandenivia’s flag
Scarlett’s Favourite Flag of the Month
If you know me, you know I love flags! So, I’ve created a new segment for EuroNews to replace the awards (for now), where I’ll be picking out my favourite flag from our region this month and give it a quick review. If you want your own personalised review, be sure to telegram Einswenn for an EFES-approved flag rating.

This month's winner is... New skandenivia!

This flag is an interesting one and seems to reflect that of Greenland somewhat, which is fitting for a Scandinavia-based nation. I love the colours for this one, pink and white look great together and super cute, and I have used them myself on the flag of Cloudyfloss. The symbol is more unique than Greenland's since on top of using the two main colours switched around it has extra details such as the inner semi-circles and the vertical line, also playing around with the colours. The shade of pink could perhaps be a little different to provide more contrast from the white but besides that, I have little criticism for this flag and it is a beautiful piece of art.

A Goblinoid Merchant, current
WA Delegate of The Embassy

Embassy Raid and Liberation
The Embassy was established in 2015 aiming to be the largest connector of diversity amongst regions through a single point. For over five years, they built almost 5000 embassies, with more than one in five of all regions represented..

That dream continued even after the founder had ceased to exist two years ago. But on 31 January, The ambassadors reception ceased to exist. Only one nation, A Goblinoid Merchant, resided in the Embassy by 8 February. Then it all came down. After the password was apparently leaked, a joint force comprising Lily, Lone Wolves United, the Black Hawks, and many others invaded. During the occupation, the raiders ‘tagged’ the region, and undid all the work put into building the embassies. Nations from all over NS called for raiders to leave the region and cancel the closures. Five days after the raid, a liberation was passed in the Security Council. The resolution itself did not end the raid, but instead dismantled the regional password and allowed defenders to come in to kick the raiders out from the region. After five days of occupation, the Embassy was free at last, but the damage has been done. But the spirit still lives on, and they are already on the way to recovery. Hundreds of embassies have re-opened by 2 March, and the number is going to grow!

But what is tagging anyway?

If you have ventured across the regions of NS, you might have come across a region with a Lily or TBH advert. This practice is called tagging, where raiders alter the flag and world factbook entries, close embassies, and add the victim region to their collection. This is a type of raiding, which means taking other regions. The reverse is called ‘defending’ which frees and saves regions from raiders. They are collectively called ‘Military Gameplay’ or R&D. R&D works when large amounts of WA nations move to a region and endorse each other during what’s known as an ‘Update’ which, relevant to this, elect a new delegate. Once elected delegate (through endorsements), the raider or defender has the authority to change the region. Usually, the appearance and embassies are altered. In the Embassy, the raider forces established a delegate, damaged the region, and held on until defender armies came in and ejected the raiders, before handing the delegacy to a native nation.

Is Europe Safe from Raids?

Yes. First of all, the founder can easily reverse any raid that happened to their region. Secondly, overtaking Imperium Anglorum in endorsements would require at least over 360 nations participating, which is practically impossible. That does not mean disruptions cannot though. Raiders can and have temporarily removed IA from the delegacy, installing other old, trusted, unwilling European nations as the delegate. This can end soon as Europeans unendorsed the new delegate. But still, regions like Europe are safe from tag raids. Participating in defender militaries can also help save other regions too.

The UEFA Champions League knockout
phase has started
Sporting Situation
European football is back in action and the month of February featured the first leg of the Round of 16 knockout round in the Champions League. PSG crushed Barcelona 4-1 with a hat trick from Mbappe, Liverpool got a 2-0 win over Leipzig in Budapest due to travel restrictions, Juventus heavily underperformed in a 2-1 loss to Porto, Dortmund beat Sevilla 3-2 in a thriller, Chelsea edged out Atletico with a stunning goal by Giroud, Bayern demolished Lazio 4-1, Real Madrid struggled to beat an Atalanta team with ten men, and Man City eased past Monchengladbach 2-0. The second legs of all the matchups await in the middle of March. Elsewhere, the Europa League is going on with the Round of 32 wrapped up. Highlights include Arsenal struggling to beat Benfica and Man United soundly beating Real Sociedad over both legs.

While City has been dominant in the Prem, the race for Europe heats up. It is still anybody’s game to secure the other qualifying spots, though Man United and Leicester have a cushion over West Ham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham, and many other aspiring teams. The French Ligue 1 has been surprisingly competitive with Lille holding a two-point lead over PSG at the moment. Serie A is also competitive with Inter and Milan gunning for the title with perennial title-winners Juventus underperforming in 3rd. Atletico holds their grip on La Liga with Real Madrid and Barcelona trying to catch up. In the Bundesliga, Bayern still holds the top spot with Red Bull’s Leipzig trying to deny them top spot. We await to see any further developments in the big leagues.

The Club World Cup has predictably been won by reigning European champions Bayern who beat Mexican club Tigres 1-0. Although the CWC is not viewed in high regard in Europe, South American and North American teams relish the challenge of playing the top team in Europe and potentially winning the trophy.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has received the tragic news of his father passing away after drowning in a lake. The footballing world paid tributes to the Becker family and offered condolences to the goalkeeper. Alisson is having a tough year with a recent rough patch in February and now has to deal with his father’s death. For that reason, he was left out of the lineup against Sheffield United and backup Adrian took over starting duties.

World-famous golfer Tiger Woods is in recovery after being involved in a violent car crash that left his leg badly damaged. He had to undergo surgery as part of the recovery process. Thankfully, he is doing well in the hospital and appears to be on the road to full recovery.

The NTSB released the final report on the 2020 Calabasas helicopter crash that killed legendary basketball icon Kobe Bryant. The probable cause was that the pilot of the helicopter became disoriented while flying under visual flight rules. Weather conditions were poor at the time and the helicopter soon crashed into the hills. Bryant was taking his 13-year-old daughter Gianna to a basketball game at Mamba Sports Academy.

Titillating Trivia
Hello and welcome to this issue’s National Trivia section! This month we are covering Serbia, a small country in the Balkans that does not get attention that often; the South American and sometimes Caribbean nation of Guyana; and Timor-Leste, a small country often overlooked on the border of Indonesia.

Serbia
Serbia’s flag at first looks a little plain due to its similarities to the Russian flag. However, this flag is actually quite interesting. The first thing to note is the use of a crown despite Serbia being very much a republic now, this is most likely to reflect the Byzantine Empire. More interesting however is the extensive rules of respect Serbia has for its flag. The flag cannot be hung so that any part of it is touching the floor, it cannot be used as a rest for anything, nor can it be used as a table cloth, rug, carpet, curtain, or covering for any object and can only be placed on a table if in the form of a table flag. In addition to all of that the flag has to be in pristine condition or it cannot be used. Serbia is one of many countries where the desecration of the national flag is illegal.
Serbia’s capital Belgrade has a name which is similar to the name of the nation of Belarus. As with Belarus (White Russia), ‘Bel’ means ‘white’ and so the city’s name is literally the white city, with ‘grade’ being similar to ‘grad’ used in Russian such as in Volgograd (River Volga City).

Guyana
Guyana has a unique and friendly sounding official title in its name, the Co-operative Republic of Guyana and this reflects the diverse make-up of its population. The majority of Guyanese people are Indian descended, thanks to the British Empire’s importation of cheap labour from the Asian nation, but its most popular party in the 1970s was the People’s National Congress, a party made up of mostly African descended people. Using the term Co-operative shows Guyana’s dedication to working together as one Guyanese people and not worrying about racial divisions or who is in charge of who and has remained in place since the 1973 election after racial tensions from the 1960s were finally resolved.
Guyana’s flag is one of my favourites due to its unique style and colouration, and it was raised proudly in 1966 as a symbol of a country finally free from colonial control. Unfortunately, its flag does have a slight colonial twist however as it was not designed by a Guyanese person. The flag was designed by Whitney Smith, an American who is known for coining the term Vexillology (the study of flags) and who also designed one of the proposals for the flag of Antarctica. The white and black areas of the flag were not part of Smith’s flag proposal and like the flag itself were a foreign suggestion, being added by the British College of Arms, which has jurisdiction over all Commonwealth members to this day.

Guyana is the location of the jungle where,
according to some journals in Pokémon Red and
Green, Mew was discovered.
Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste or East Timor has had a rough experience in the world, like with other Portuguese Colonies, independence was granted very late in the 20th century, in 1975, and after finally gaining independence just one year later it found itself colonised by Indonesia. It was not until 2002 that the nation finally gained full independence, though this did have the fun side effect of making Timor-Leste the first new country of the 21st century.
The tiny nation has two other unique characteristics not matched by many others in the continent. The first is its religious make-up; it, along with the Philippines is one of only two majority Christian nations in all of South-East Asia and one of only six in the continent of Asia as a whole (alongside Armenia, Cyprus, Georgia, Philippines, and Russia too if you include it in Asia). The second is its position in the world, being the only nation in all of Asia to be located entirely in the Southern Hemisphere.
