Great Houses of Gallifrey

Overview

A Great House is a bloodline or family of High-born Time Lords (Gallifreyans who are Time Lords by virtue of birth rather than education). The Great Houses of Gallifrey are so entrenched into the culture of the Homeworld that the collective term "Great Houses" was often used as a word for Time Lord society and culture. The Great Houses are considered to be more like waves of some fundamental universal force than actual family trees.

Various Great Houses have risen and fallen over the millennia and the total number of Houses has been known to change radically over time. At times there can be as little as thirty-five or as many as 247. In the Pre-War era of Gallifrey the number of Great Houses was at 157.

Only 31 Great Houses were known to have survived the War in Heaven at least partly intact. The rest were either exterminated in their entirety, fled the Homeworld en masse, or had their few surviving heirs scattered to the wind. This does not mean their bloodlines are forever extinct, as many have been Re-Founded. Indeed, any bloodlines can be Re-Founded so long as their genetic template survives, whether it be the House's intact Loom-Core, a surviving Cousin, or a living member of one of the House's cadet branches.

The War is now in the past and the Great Houses have since rebuilt. Many bloodlines have been restored, including the long dead Houses Ixion and Jadedreamers. Several new bloodlines have also been established, most branching off of the initial 31 post-War Houses. The number of Great Houses continued to grow in the centuries after the War before coming to rest at its current count. 247. Of these Houses, 72 are considered Oldblood while the remaining 175 are Newblood. Of the 90 "new" Houses, 31 are those that went extinct prior to the War and were reinstated while 59 are newly-formed Houses or Cadet Houses.

The Great Houses use mighty breeding-engines known as "Looms" to create new members using a standard genetic template based on the DnA of the House's founder. For this reason, members of a Great House were laterally rather than directly related, so many choose to addressed each other as "Cousin". Kinship terminology such as "Brother/Sister", "Mother/Father", and "Aunt/Uncle" is also used albeit rarely and largely considered arbitrary (the "nature" of relationship may be determined by the House's Loom). The founder of a Great House holds the title of "Grandfather" and is referred to by the name of the House they founded (i.e. Grandfather Lungbarrow of the House of Lungbarrow). A High-born Time Lord's full name often included the name of their House. Each Great House is made up of roughly forty-five "Cousins".

Depending on the Great House, new members will emerge from the Loom as either a full-grown adult or in the form of a small child. Regardless of appearance, these young Time Lords develop at the same rate (even regular Gallifreyans develop rapidly). From the moment of their birth, all Gallifreyans (not just the High-born) have the mental maturity of a Human Teenager (a Teenager with the ability to calculate advanced quantum mathematics), by the age of 8 a Gallifreyan has the maturity of a Human Undergraduate, and by the age of 10 they are fully able to contribute to Gallifreyan society. The sight of small children preforming the workload of a full-grown adult poses a major culture shock to many species.

Each Great House is lead by a "Kithriarch". Kithriarchs are usually appointed by the previous Kithriarch before their "Final Death Day". Under the Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey, a member of any House can give up the protection of their House and become the Kithriarch of a new House with a new Chapterhouse and Loom (founders of a Great House hold the title of "Grandfather"). A Renegade Time Lord traditionally renounces his true name and his House.

Chapterhouses (Physical Residences)

Each Great House maintain their own residence known as a "Chapterhouse". Each Gallifreyan Chapter maintains their own Chapterhouse that serves as their headquarters.

Given the arid climate of the Homeworld, most Chapterhouses are surrounded by large walls to keep out the dust and sand. Behind these walls are vast, carefully-tended gardens, glittering oases in the desert.

The actual physical Houses are sentient and the oldest living thing on Gallifrey. Their roots extend deep into the ground beneath them. The artificially animated furniture needs to be house trained, otherwise it will tend to chase people around. The paintings whisper at passing House members. The Druges are massive automated humanoid servants who can be found throughout the house. They answer to the Housekeeper, but serve both the cousins of the house and the house itself. Each one is composed of a basic servitor eidolon surounded by non-living syncretic matter that appears to be varnished wood. Some Time Lords are know to take Druges with them in their TARDIS to serve them when they are off-world. Each House has a Housekeeper who's is bonded/married to their house and wears a wooden "wedding band". The Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining the House and its Druges. They can use the mirrors of the house to see into any room.

Each House has a Loomshed which holds its Loom. The Honorable Central Population Directory defines the quota of cousins allowed for each House's Loom (which is forty-five-per-House on average). Each Loom has a unique Genetic Core to loom its members. This creates a template that standardizes the abilities and blood of everyone of that family. A Houses genetic template is based on the DnA of it's Founder/Grandfather.

Ruling Houses

The Ruling Houses represent the six most powerful Great Houses of Gallifrey. Each Ruling House had a delegate that sat on the High Council. The position of "Ruling House" was obtained by having one of its members serve as the leader of an entire Chapter.

The current Ruling Houses are the political Houses of Duskeriall, Lineacrux, and Lorizhon alongside the military Houses of Arpexia, Alanir, and Xianthellipse.

The Duskeriall govern the Prydonian Chapter, Arpexia governs the Arcalian Chapter, Alanir governs the Patrex Chapter, Lineacrux governs the Scendeles Chapter, Xianthellipse governs the Dromeian Chapter, and Lorizhon governs the Cerulean Chapter.

House Ixion and House Catherion were Ruling Houses during the Age of the Pythia and fell out of favor after the Anchoring of the Thread. Members of House Ixion left Gallifrey during the First Diaspora in 9 RE while the remaining Cousins of House Catherion were slaughtered in their own Chapterhouse by a rogue Babel of their own creation. The vacancy left in the Ruling Houses was filled by House Lineacrux and House Mirraflex.

At the start of the War in Heaven, the Ruling Houses included three "political" Houses (Dvora, Lineacrux, and Tracolix) and three "military" Houses (Arpexia, Mirraflex, and Xianthellipse).

By the 55th year of the War, House Tracolix lost its standing as a Ruling House due to a number of variables. The vacancy was eventually filled by a resurgent House Lungbarrow.

During the Presidency of Pandak V, House Mirraflex lost its status as a Ruling House due to its egregious actions during the War. The vacancy was filled by House Thelixar, a traditionally Prydonian House that straddled the line between "political" and "military."

Cardinal Houses

The so-called "Cardinal Houses" are the legendary Great Houses that formed the modern Chapters of Gallifreyan society. The Cousins of a Cardinal House are seen as the paragon (or archetype) of the ideal member of their Chapter.

Although none of the Cardinal Houses have held the title of 'Ruling House' for quite some time, they still remain a powerful force in Gallifreyan politics. The Cardinal Houses also retain power within the Chapter Stronghold-Cities across Gallifrey.

The Cardinal Houses include the following; Prydon, Arcal, Patrex, Scendel, Drome, and Cerulean.

Exo Founding Houses

The very first Great Houses in Gallifreyan history are so ancient that they predate the Age of the Pythia, having arisen in an era where the planet was divided into a number of warring city-states.

Exo Founding Houses are the Great Houses that date all the way back to the Dark Times and indeed pre-date Rassilon's Intuitive Revolution that completely reshaped Gallifreyan culture. Of the Exo Founding Houses, little over a dozen still exist in the modern era. The Exo Founding Houses that have gone extinct might still be found in the fictional writings of beings throughout the Universe. Cousins of these Houses command significantly more respect than members of later ones.

(†) indicates Great Houses that were rendered "extinct" but were later refounded. An "Extinct House" can only be restored by a Time Lord with ties to the House, either by blood, marriage, or adoption. An Exctinct House can also be refounded by the senior House it spawned from or by a cadet House it seeded before its downfall. A Great House can be labeled as "extinct" even if it has living heirs (in such cases the rights and privileges of the House have been revoked).

House Lungbarrow is the only known Great House to be refounded more than once.

House Ixion is one of the only Great Houses to have been restored at least once but have subsequent restorations blocked by the High Council. This restriction has since been lifted by Lord President Pandak IX.

Current Exo Founding Houses

Prydonian Chapter

- Blyledge: The House of Blyledge was ancient even by the time of Rassilon. While not affiliated with any specific Chapter, the majority of the Cousins of Blyledge were either Prydonians or Ceruleans. House Blyledge is an angular small dark building that is older than the hill it sits on. It has a walled garden of silver trees in its center and is within visual sight of the Capitol.

- Dowtroyal: The House of Dowtroyal was an ancient and powerful House that existed long before the time of Rassilon. Although it was quite powerful during the Age of the Pythia, the influence of House Dowtroyal has since waned considerably.

- Fordfarding: The House of Fordfarding is best known for being the Great House of Rassilon, the Founding Father of Time Lord civilization. House Fordfardind was was reformed into the House of Rassilon following the Intuitive Revolution. After the second overthrow of Rassilon, the original name of House Rassilon was restored. House Fordfarding has been firmly affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter for the entirety of Time Lord history.

- Heartshaven (†): The House of Heartshaven went extinct after its Loom died in 508.B.T.W., with its remaining members being adopted into the Newblood House Dvora. In the aftermath of the Second Civil War in 30,010 RE the Loom-Core of the Heartshaven Loom was replaced with a different one containing the bio-data of the Imperiatrix (the last member of the original Exo-Founding House Dvora). The Heartshaven Chapterhouse was located near Mount Cadon and had a famous vineyard that produced some of the finest wine on Gallifrey. Lady President Romana was a Cousin of this House and was among the last clutch of offspring produced by its Loom. The Newblood House Dvora was spawned from the extinct House Heartshaven. It was a Cousin of House Dvora that restored House Heartshaven after the War in Heaven.

- Lungbarrow (†): The House of Lungbarrow is by far one of the most well known Great Houses of Gallifrey, and not for good reasons. Throughout it's history, House Lungbarrow has been reformed three times and has maintained two Chapterhouses. The first "refounding" of House Lungbarrow came after the Intuitive Revolution. While still considered to be a house of wealth and privilege, in the last several thousand years it has fallen from favor, with its highest-ranking member holding the title of Ordinal General. House Lungbarrow's most notable Cousin is the infamous Renegade known as 'the Doctor'. About 336 years after the looming of the Doctor, the Lungbarrow Chapterhouse buried itself into the face of Mount Lung and was subsequently deleted from history for exceeding its Loom Quota. 673 years after it's "deletion", the Chapterhouse rose up and threw itself down the side of Mount Lung. House Lungbarrow was refounded a second time with a new Chapterhouse. During the War, the entire House of Lungbarrow was exterminated and declared 'extinct', with 'the Doctor' being the only survivor. House Lungbarrow has recently been refounded for a third time. House Lunbarrow is almost exclusively affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter (although Peylix Omega is recorded as an "ancestor" of the House). Cousins of House Lungbarrow were loomed in the form of children.

Scendeles Chapter

- Klypeaster: The House of Klypeaster was once one of the most powerful Houses within the Scendeles Chapter. Alongside House Loxodrome, House Loxodrome was heavily involved in the colonization of Minyos. Both Houses interbred extensively with the local Minyans. Elements ofnHouse Klypeaster biodata are still present in the royal bloodlines of Minyos.

- Lineacrux: For a long time, the House of Lineacrux was the least active of the Great Houses, known only for their expertise in Gallifreyan history and laws. Across various regenerations, most of the Cousins of House Lineacrux take on the appearance of extremely old and senile Gallifreyans who passively observe society around them. The truth of the matter is that the Lineacrux are some of the most powerful and influential members of Gallifreyan society. Their decrepit appearance is merely an act designed to lull others into ignoring them. They observe and (when consulted) offer their opinion in almost all gatherings of Gallifreyan society. Cousins of House Lineacrux were loomed in the form of adults. House Lineacrux is a Ruling House and dominates the Scendeles Chapter.

Dromeian Chapter

- Loxodrome: The House of Loxodrome was once one of the most powerful Houses within the Dromeian Chapter. Alongside House Klypeaster, House Loxodrome was heavily involved in the colonization of Minyos. Both Houses interbred extensively with the local Minyans. Elements of House Loxodrome biodata can still be found in the royal bloodlines of Minyos.

Cerulean Chapter

Unknown/Unaffiliated

Extinct Exo Founding Houses

Arcalian Chapter

- Jadedreamers: The House of Jadedreamers predates the Rassilon and were known for being close followers of the Pythia. Following the Intuitive Revolution, all female members of House Jadedreamers joined the rest of the Pythia's followers on Karn, forming the Sisterhood of the Sacred Flame. House Jadedreamers was declared extinct and it's remaining male members were likely adopted into other Houses. During the War in Heaven, the rights and privileges of House Jadedreamers were ceremonially given over to the Sisterhood of Karn after the War, increasing their involvement with the Time Lords of Gallifrey.

Unknown/Unaffiliated

- Catherion: The House of Catherion was once a Ruling House of Gallifrey during the Age of the Pythia that fell out of favor during the Anchoring of the Thread, beginning a long, slow decline. Some time prior to the 'War Era' of Gallifrey, the remaining Cousins of House Catherion were slaughtered by an insane Babel of their own creation within their own Chapterhouse.

- Dvora: The original House of Dvora was established during the rule of the 21st Pythia, having been founded by King Dvora of Demos. House Dvora was among the few Great Houses whose Chapterhouse was not on Gallifrey (although Demos was still in the same star system). House Dvora went extinct after the execution of Imperiatrix Pandora in 30,010 RE. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Line of Dvora was preserved after the Loom-Core of the Heartshaven Loom was swapped with a new one containing the bio-data of the Imperiatrix. From House Heartshaven would come the Newblood House Dvora, an evolution of the ancient bloodline.

- Ixion (†): The House of Ixion was once a Ruling House of Gallifrey during the Age of the Pythia that fell out of favor after the Anchoring of the Thread. The "original" House Ixion left Gallifrey during the First Diaspora in 9 RE and the High Council labeled it "extinct" thereafter. The Ixion Chapterhouse is located on the southern edge of the civilized portion of Gallifrey and is considered to be the southern-most Chapterhouse. During the Imperator Presidency, Lord President Morbius chose the old Ixion Chapterhouse to be the headquarters of the Order of the Weal (nicknamed the New House of Ixion). Cousins of the "New House of Ixion" were malcontents of other larger Houses. who were combat trained. Despite this training most of their duties were administrative. They Loom of Ixion was never used but rumor has it that they tampered with other House’s Looms to produced mutants and renegades. Following the exile of Morbius, the Order of the Weal was dispanded and the Ixion Chapterhouse was abandoned one final time. Given the shadowy nature of House Ixion after its fall, the High Council has prevented any subsequent attempt to revive House Ixion. The Caretaker Line of Ixion Chapterhouse is closely monitored by the High Council.

- Mornox: The House of Mornox was destroyed during the Vampire Wars early on in Time Lord history. The Loom of House Mornox was tainted with "V-Factor" and a number of its members (including its Kithriarch) were transformed into vampires. There are rumors that House Mornox was not fully destroyed and that a number of its ill-begotten kin still haunt the darkest corners of the universe.

- Nineveh: The House of Nineveh was an ancient Great House of legendary status. According to legend, the Chapterhouse of House Nineveh attained sapience and slaughtered its inhabitants before fleeing the Homeworld. The Nineveh Chapterhouse now sits outside of the universe, attempting to lure Time Lords to kill them and consume their TARDIS. Of course, the tale of House Nineveh's disappearance is treated as a childrene's boogeyman story used to warn against curiosity. However, those who deny the tale of House Nineveh can conjure up no alternative explanation as to how an entire Chapterhouse vanished without a trace.

- Veldarin: The House of Veldarin went extinct several centuries before the Intuitive Revolution. The last descendant of the House was Faranor Briganti Thelixar, who went on to be an important figure in early Time Lord history. Thelixar later went on to found his own "House of Thelixar." House Thelixar would come to inhabit the old Veldarin Chapterhouse.

Oldblood "First Founding" Houses

Following the Intuitive Revolution, the Pythia cursed Gallifrey with two million years of sterility. To counteract the Curse, Rassilon and the Other create mighty Breeding-Engines called Looms that "weave" new Gallifreyans from pure biodata. In conjunction with the Looms, Rassilon created many new Great Houses during what became known as the "First Founding". Great Houses created the Second Founding were known as "Oldblood Houses" (the term "Oldblood" also applied to the Exo Founding Houses).

There were 72 Oldblood Houses before the War began. That number is now 32.

Current Oldblood Houses

Prydonian Chapter

- Brightshore: The House of Brightshore is known for it's political power, wealth, and sense of supercilious entitlement, but not the intellect of its cousins. House Brightshore is affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter.

- Duskeriall: The House of Duskeriall is a politically influential House affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter. Their most well known member was Gothaparduskerialldrapolatkh (or Goth for short), who served as Lord Chancellor under President Pandad IV. Officially, Goth was killed attempting to apprehend the Master, a renegade Time Lord that assassinated Pandad IV. House Duskeriall rose to become the Ruling House of the Prydonian Chapter in the aftermath of the War in Heaven, spearheading the attempts to rebuilt the Homeworld and restore order to the Spiral Politic.

- Firebrand: The House of Firebrand is an Oldblood Prydonian House located near the mighty Mount Cadon. Cousins of House Firebrand are infamous for their fiery tempers.

- Goodlight: The House of Goodlight is an Oldblood House about which little is known.

- Redlooms: The House of Redlooms has produced military ordinals for the Watch since the Great Days of Rassilon. It is a family of loyal mavericks who have defeated a dozen Time Lord traitors. The cousins of this house often tell loomlings stories about vampires. House Redlooms was affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter.

- Scarlet: The House of Scarlet, given the name, is almost certainly affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter. It is also possible that House Scarlet is actually an Exo-Founding House and was once a Ruling House.

- Thelixar: The House of Thelixar is an ancient and revered Oldblood House, long affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter. House Thelixar embodies a philosophy of profound reverence for knowledge, artistry, and the preservation of ancient lore. Its Cousins are proud, often haughty, viewing themselves as the inheritors of a cosmic legacy, tasked with safeguarding the remnants and memory of their ancestor's long-lost glory. Despite their proud nature and inherent sense of superiority, House Thelixar is surprisingly quick to establish alliances, forging bonds with other Houses and Chapters and even provides incredibly subtle and indirect assistance to the “lesser species” in the name of achieving greater goals.

- Warpsmith: The House of Warpsmith is an Oldblood House of the Prydonian Chapter whose power has waxed and waned significantly over the millennia. House Warpforge initially gained significant prestige during the ancient Time Crusades when they forged an alliance with the time-active Phaidonians. When the Policy of Non-Intervention was adopted, House Warpsmith faded into the background. When Gallifrey began to reestablish contact with the outside universe during the pre-War era, House Warpsmith experienced a great renaissance after reconnecting with the Phaidonians.

Arcalian Chapter

- Arpexia: The Cousins of the House of Arpexia are Gallifrey’s only scientific fundamentalists. They place great faith reason and logic as the solution to all problems and shun emotion. They have been conducting research for research’s sake for millions of years. House Arpexia produced many experimental Time Travel Capsules over the eons, but their technology tends to be over complicated. House Arpexia is a Ruling House and dominates the Arcalian Chapter.

- Dellatrovella: The House of Dellatrovella is one of the oldest and most powerful Great Houses. Despite its venerability and illustriousness, not much is known about House Dellatrovellas. Many Cousins of House Dellatrovella belong to the Arcalian Chapter.

- Kalhos: The House of Kalhos is an Oldblood House with strong connections to the Arcalian Chapter. House Kalhos is known for its great strength of character, strong sense of justice, and single-minded focus on "cold hard facts." Grandfather Kalhos was once the greatest protégé of the Time Lord Founder Omega. Following Omega's disappearance after the Qqaba Mission, his most loyal acolyte founded an entire Great House upon his (rather biased) interpretation of Omega's principles and values. It is unsurprising then that House Kalhos is firmly aligned with House Kalhos.

Patrex Chapter

- Alanir: The House of Alanir was an ancient Oldblood House of the Patrex Chapter. The most (in)famous member of House Alanir is the renegade Time Lord known only as "the Rani." House Alanir disowned the Rani long before she went renegade, striking her from their bloodline after she went off to join the Prydonian College. Since the fall of House Mirraflex in the aftermath of the War in Heaven, House Alanir arose as the new Ruling House of the Patrex Chapter

- Avarna: The House of Avarna is Oldblood House within the Patrex Chapter. Like with House Redlooms, Cousins of House Avarna where often found in the ranks of the Chancellory Guard and later the House Military. There are persistent rumors that House Avarna was originally a Servitor House that was elevated to Great House status.

- Corax (†): The House of Corax was an ancient Oldblood house with a long and storied history. It was almost completely exterminated during the War in Heaven (with but a single survivor) and was thereafter considered 'extinct'. The sole surviving Cousin went Renegade after the War ended but was later brought back to Gallifrey by the Lord President Pandad IX. President Pandak IX reinstated House Corax with the Renegade as the new Grandfather. House Corax is affiliated with the Patrex Chapter and is known for producing renowned poets and authors. The Corax Chapterhouse is notably remote compared to the other Houses and is notable for its dark and gothic appearance.

- Mirraflex: The House of Mirraflex produces many of Gallifrey’s generals, enforcers, and strategists. Cousins of House Mirraflex are known for being aggressive and ruthless defenders of the Laws of Time. They have nothing but disdain for the Lesser Species and are know for their sense of supercilious entitlement. Their Loom was known for being particularly versatile. Mirraflex Cousins do not trust members of New Blood Houses, especially House Xianthellipse. The House was founded by General Mirraflex after the beginning of the Eternal Wars, who structured it as an esoteric martial lodge. The previous Castellan, Kenossium, may have hailed from House Mirraflex. House Mirraflex was affiliated with the Patrex Chapter.

- Witforge: The House of Witforge was a relatively minor Great House that was for the most part affiliated with the Patrex Chapter. The Whitforge Chapterhouse was located among the Northern Lakes within the Province of Presusis. Witforge came into great power and wealth during the War in Heaven.

Scendeles Chapter

- Esquertal: The House of Esquertal was a very minor Oldblood House with ancient ties to the Scendeles Chapter. House Esquertal has never recovered from the incident in which the Scendeles Chapter bankrupted itself during the construction of the Panopticon, an event that occured many millennia ago.

Dromeian Chapter

- Neutronides: The House of Neutronides was an Oldblood House obsessed with the "Old Ways." It is one of the few Houses that regularly speaks using Old High Gallifreyan. Neutronides Chapterhouse has the largest pastures of κοως on Gallifrey. House Neutronides was affiliated with the Dromeian Chapter.

Cerulean Chapter

- Bluewood: The House of Bluewood is a senior Oldblood House of the Cerulean Chapter.

- Lorizhon: The House of Lorizhon is an Oldblood House spawned from the Exofounding House of Blyledge, founded by those seeking to Cerulean Chapter. Since the political downfall of House Tracolix, House Lorizhon has risen as the Ruling House of the Cerulean Chapter.

- Narthmor: The House of Narthmor was among the few Oldblood Houses with consistent ties to Interventionists. There are rumors that House Narthmor is related to the ancient renegade Samyaza who rebelled against Rassilon just after the end of the Vampire Wars. House Narthmor is a senior House with the Cerulean Chapter.

- Wetrix: The House of Wetrix was a senior Oldblood House within the Cerulean Chapter. During the Second Founding, House Wetrix spawned the Newblood House of Wetstone. The Sapphire Towers in Caerulum (the Cerulean Chapter-City) were property of House Wetrix. One tower was gifted to House Wetrix.

Unknown/Unaffiliated

- Artronides: The House of Artronides is an Oldblood House that claims descendancy from the mighty Lord Artron, one of the greatest scientists during the time of Rassilon.

- Brightash: The House of Brightash is a relatively minor Oldblood House.

- Bungalow: The House of Bungalow is a venerable Unaffiliated House with a long and storied history. It has produced "Cardinals and Princes" and has ties to all six Chapters. Despite this, House Bungalow is often looked down on its size, possessing a single-story Chapter House and a Cousin allotment of four, the lowest of any House on Gallifrey. Since the literal dawn of time, House Bungalow has maintained a heated, one-sided rivalry against House Lungbarrow.

- Dooclare: The House of Dooclare is a senior Unaffiliated House known for adopting or otherwise sheltering many Time Lords that had been kicked out of their original House. Because of this, House Dooclare often got in trouble with the Honorable Central Population Directory. On the otherhand, a large and diverse population was often a source of strength for the House.

- Jurisprudence: The House of Jurisprudence is known for producing legal professionals (a fact that is purely coincidental). House Jurisprudence is officially unaffiliated with any Chapter, though many belong to the Dromeian Chapter.

- Wherewithal: The House of Wherewithal has no interest in Gallifreyan traditions and is mostly ignored by the other Great Houses. Most of the cousins are female. House Wherewithal maintained a decrepit old Chapterhouse in the mountains of Southern Gallifrey that had hundreds of stories. The most noteworthy Cousin of House Wherewithal is the idiosyncratic Time Lady known as 'Iris Wildthym' (who may not even be a Gallifreyan at all).

Extinct Oldblood Houses

- Grimoire: The House of Grimoire was one of the many Great Houses of Gallifrey to have been completely exterminated during the War. Even during it's existence, House Grimoire had been viewed with suspicion by the rest of Time Lord society as this House had a chequered past of meddling with the culture of Earth. House Grimoire would eventually be "replaced" by House Gigas (in a manner of speaking) after the War's end.

- Heartsblood: The House of Heartsblood was known for its deep connection to the genetic lineage of Gallifrey. They were meticulous record-keepers of Time Lord ancestry and were often seen as the guardians of tradition and purity. While they were often perceived as somewhat insular, their knowledge of Time Lord heritage was unparalleled, making them sought after for their historical and genealogical expertise. They might have specialized in genetic manipulation and cloning, ensuring the "best" traits are passed down through generations. This genetic speciality was House Heartsblood's main contribution to the War in Heaven. House Heartsblood was among the many Great Houses to be completely exterminated during the Last Day of the War.

- Sundelix: The House of Sundelix took a more philosophical and even spiritual approach to time. They were the custodians of universal constants and paradoxes, striving to understand the fundamental laws that govern reality and the implications of temporal interference. Their members were often contemplative and deeply analytical, spending their time meditating on the nature of existence and the ripple effects of every action. Their members were seen as the "wise elders" of Gallifrey, offering counsel and warning against the misuse of temporal power.

- Velora: The House of Velora was shrouded in an air of mystery and foresight. They were said to have possessed unique abilities to perceive potential futures and past events with a clarity that borders on precognition. While almost every Time Lord possessed recognition abilities, few could match the future-sight of Velorian Cousons. While they rarely interfered directly, their pronouncements and cryptic warnings are taken seriously by the other Houses. Their members were enigmatic and reclusive, communicating only through metaphors and riddles. They were viewed with a mixture of reverence and unease, their knowledge a powerful but unpredictable force. The last prophecy of House Velora was in regards to the War in Heaven, produced several centuries in advance. When the High Council sent a representative to the Velora Chapterhouse to inquire on these grave portents, the representative found the entire Chapterhouse abandoned.

Renegade Oldblood Houses

- Nechronomancy: The House of Nechronomany is a notorious House whose original name has long since been lost. "Nechronomancers" don’t believe in the passage of time and don’t acknowledge their gender or their names. They’ve deleted most of the records of their House and are viewed as pariahs among Time Lord society. They are capable altering time states in ways that would be impossible for any other Time Lord. During the War, Nechronomancers collected Highest Entropy Matter (HEM) from dead time states (where the universe had reached thermal equilibrium and history/time has ceased to flow). Despite being regarded as "renegades" and "outcasts", their field of expertise proved to be too useful to the Great Houses to simply throw away. Rather than banishing House Nechronomany from the Homeworld, the High Council chose instead to keep them at arms length.

- Obsivian: The House of Obsivian was characterized by its mastery of interdimensional travel and non-linear physics. They were the pioneers of exploring parallel universes and alternate timelines, often venturing into dangerous and uncharted territories of reality. Their members were known for their daring, their unconventional thinking, and their often unsettling knowledge of what could be. They might be seen as mavericks, sometimes even reckless, but their breakthroughs in trans-dimensional mechanics are undeniable. The entire House went Renegade and fled to a parallel universe during the early years of the War in Heaven

Newblood "Second Founding" Houses

The 200th Generation of Time Lords coincides with the so-called "Second Founding" in which a flood of brand new Great Houses are created. It was the only other time in Gallifreyan history in which new Great Houses were created en masse.

Great Houses created during or after the "Second Founding" are known as "Newblood Houses". There are very few Newblood houses (relative to the number of Oldblood Houses) and their Cousins tend to be quite eccentric (or even Interventionists). Unlike the Oldbloods, many Newbloods have the ability to precisely control their regenerations.

Current Newblood Houses

Prydonian Chapter

- Arca: The House of Arca was a minor Newblood House of the Prydonian Chapter. House Arca was originally aligned with the Arcalian Chapter from the time of its founding until about the mid pre-War era when it switched to the Prydonian Chapter. House Arca is not to be confused with House Arcal, the founders of the Arcalian Chapter.

- Drusenda: The House of Drusenda was a minor Newblood House of the Prydonian Chapter.

- Dvora: The House of Dvora is the first of the Newblood Houses. "Grandfather Dvora" was originally a Cousin of the now extinct House Heartshaven. Future Lady President Romana was adopted into House Dvora after House Heartshaven went extinct. Cousins of House Dvora view themselves as destined to publicly lead and control. Dvora are ruthlessly practical and open to using violent methods, but strive to appear impersonal and passionless. The infamous Lord President Morbius was a member of House Dvora. The House was named in honor of the original Exo-Founding House Dvora. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Newblood House Dvora was a direct, genetic continuation (and evolution) of the original bloodline. House Dvora was once the Ruling House of the Prydonian Chapter prior to and during the War in Heaven. It lost its rank after Rassilon the Resurrected elevated his own House into dominance over the Prydonian Chapter.

- Kalayethzor: The House of Kalayethzor is a minor Newblood House of the Prydonian Chapter of which little is known.

The great explorer Marnal vel-Dvora was the Grandfather of House Oakdown. House Oakdown was affiliated with the Prydonian Chapter.

- Parjtesa: The House of Parjtesa is a minor Newblood House of the Prydonian Chapter of which little is known.

- Stillhaven*: The House of Stillhaven is a nearly extinct Newblood House with only one surviving member. In the Last Year of the Time War, the Kithriarch of House Stillhaven was one of the only two members of the Supreme Council to oppose the Ultimate Sanction. As punishment, all Cousins of House Stillhaven had their memories erased and were used in experiments. The sole exception to this was Yayani vel-Stillhaven, a personal agent of the Inner Council. Following the Coup Against Rassilon, the Stillhaven Cousins were released but deemed "un-savable" and euthanized. Yayani remains the only surviving heir of House Stillhaven. In its prime, members of House Stillhaven could be found in the ranks of the Prydonian and Cerulean Chapters.

- Andas: The House of Andas is a highly eccentric Newblood House with strong ties to the Patrex Chapter. Cousins of House Andas are seen as quite strange by the other Houses, viewed as the closest Gallifreyan equivalent to "adrenaline junkies." The primary value favored by House Andas is intrepidness, teaching its loomlings to "try anything once regardless of risk." It is unsurprising that House Andas is notorious for producing numerous renegades, further fueling speculation that the Andas Loom is the least stable of the Newblood generation.

- Davora: The House of Davora is a minor Newblood House of the Patrex Chapter of which little is known. House Davora is not to be confused with House Dvora, the Ruling House of the Prydonian Chapter. Cousins of House Meddhoran were staunch xenophiliacs with a strong obsession with foreign cultures (such as the culture of Earth). The original iteration of House Meddhoran was wiped out during the War in Heaven by Ordnance-Tetrarch Goralschai vel-Xianthellipse. After the War's end, House Meddhoran was re-seeded by House Xianthellipse. House Meddhoran is currently one of the senior Houses of the Dromeian Chapter.

- Sylvaness: The House of Sylvaness is a senior Newblood House of the Dromeian Chapter. House Sylvaness prides itself in holding true to ancient Dromeian ideals while simultaneously possessing a progressive and modernist viewpoint. House Sylvaness originally came into its current power and wealth shortly before the Imperator Crisis, becoming one of the most powerful Dromeian Chapter-Houses.

- Xianthellipse: The House of Xianthellipse was a minor Newblood House known for its understanding of biology and biodata as well as their penchant for supreme adaptability. The new Grandmother Heartsfire is the biological daughter of Seranadvorakiradine (now the renegade Time Lord known as the Nemesis), who served as the Caretaker of Heartsfire Chapterhouse prior to the War. The Grandmother claims that she was "adopted by the Matrix Ghosts of House Heartsfire", giving her legal rights to refound the House. Some factions on the High Council refute this narrative but the political influence of the Grandmother is too strong. Grandmother Heartsfire has worked to reestablish the original culture of the Heartsfire bloodline, which was known for its elegance and sophistication coupled with conviction and high aspirations. House Heartsfire fits the quintessential Newblood stereotype of "ambitious upstarts."

Extinct Newblood Houses

Arcalian Chapter

- Chronosync: The House of Chronosync focused on precision and optimization of temporal flows. They were engineers of time, responsible for maintaining the delicate balance of the universe's timeline and ensuring the smooth operation of temporal technology. Their members were highly organized, logical, and methodical, often acting as the "repair crew" for temporal anomalies. They were considered the most pragmatic and least imaginative of the Newblood Houses, but their meticulous work proved essential to preventing universal collapse in the early days of the War. In the midst of the War in Heaven, nearly half of House Chronosync defected to Faction Paradox and slaughtered the other half during the Massacre of Seraphim Reach.

Patrex Chapter

Prydonian Chapter

- Paradox: The infamous House of Paradox was originally founded by a Cousin of House Lungbarrow and conducted illegal experiments on Non-Linear Time. Under the guidance of Grandfather Paradox, the House experimented with the reproductive methods of Lesser Species and wore armor made of the bones of Vampiric Time Lords. House Paradox was eventually exiled from Gallifrey and was reformed into 'Faction Paradox', temporal terrorist organization made up of voodoo cultists.

Third Founding Houses

The Third Founding occured in the aftermath of the War in Heaven. While many bloodlines that were driven to extinction were refounded after the War, the High Council saw need to create new Houses to bolster Time Lord power in a post-War universe. Aside from those 3rd Founding Houses established by High Council edict, there were many others formed by Time Lords who were disillusioned with their birth Houses, splitting off to form their own bloodlines. As the Time Lords began to expand beyond Gallifrey, many pre-established Houses began to spawn new cadet branches.

Like with the Second Founding, Houses created during the Third Founding are classified as "Newblood."

(†) indicates Great Houses that had been rendered "extinct" but were later refounded. These particular Houses have lost their original Loom-Core and have obtained another coded to the bio-data of their Re-Founder. As such, they are legally considered a new, distinct entity of the "Third Founding" and the original House is still listed as "extinct."

Current 3rd Founding Houses

Prydonian Chapter

- Ixion: The House of Ixion is a truly ancient Great House with a long and tumultuous history. Originally an Exo Founding House established long before the days of Rassilon, it was rendered extinct and abandoned during the First Diaspora. House Ixion was briefly resurrected during the Imperator era, afterwhich the High Council ordered the Loom-Core to be destroyed and forbade anyone from reestablishing this venerable House. During post-War reconstruction, Lord President Pandak IX lifted the ban and House Ixion was formally reinstated with a brand new Loom-Core. Legally, the current House of Ixion is a new, distinct Newblood House separate from the extinct Exo Founding House Ixion. The current House Ixion has a large number of "rehabilitated" Exiled and Renegades that have returned to the Homeworld. The Newblood House Ixion has been subsumed into the Prydonian Chapter.

Arcalian Chapter

- Jadedreamers: The House of Jadedreamers was once an ancient Exo Founding House that was exiled or fled from Gallifrey in the wake of the Intuitive Revolution and subsequent Antitheist Purges. In the aftermath of the War in Heaven, House Jadedreamers was restored as a Newblood House of the Arcalian Chapter, founded by members of the Sisterhood of Karn who sought to reintegrate back into House society. House Jadedreamers still maintains close ties to the Sisterhood of Karn and often acts on their behalf within the Gallifreyan government.

Patrex Chapter

- Urquineath: The House of Urquineath is the craven house of inconsequence and holder of naught whose decline began shortly after it's founding. House Urquineath had gone completely extinct by the beginning of the War in Heaven. House Urquineath was mostly affiliated with the Patrex Chapter.

Servitor Houses

Below the Great Houses of the Time Lords are the Servitor Houses that mass-produce Gallifrey's plebian and commoner classes. This ancillary staff and their families serve as members of the Watch, technicians, artisans, cleaners, engineers, cooks, and musicians. After the Curse of the Pythia faded, Servitor Houses fell out of common usage. When the Servitor Houses were in active use Gallifrey had a population of 10 Million, folowing the end of the Curse the Gallifreyans regained the ability to reproduce naturally and the population quickly jumped to 10 Billion

Beginning in 2005846 RE, the House Military repurposed the Breeding-Engines of many Servitor Houses in order to mass-produce Soldiers for the War in Heaven.

There are rumors and heresies of the existence of a "Shadow House" which hold the 'Gallifreyan Aberrations' which incliude Gallifreyans whose regenerations have failed in some way. These included regenerations that had only regenerated half of the body, regenerations that turned the subject inside out, regenerations that mutate the Gallifreyan into hidious monstrosities, and other insidious variations. Also within this house the Black Nurseries hold mutated and paradoxical children. The advances in Gallifreyan science over the last several thousand years have almost completely eliminated such problems, and there is no evidence that the Shadow House ever existed.... or so Time Lord officials claim. It is said on the Last Day of the Time War the High Council unleashed the Gallifreyan Aberrations to fight the invading Enemy hordes.
