Race

Merfolk are a race of people tied to the water with the upper body, arms, and head of a fair-featured humanoid from the waist up and instead of legs they had a fish-like tail from the hips down. Skin colors can be mixed from the different halves or a single shade top to tail. Small fine like scales are found around the body mostly located on the lower body with some being found on the arms, neck, or shoulders. Their diet is that of an omnivore enjoying kelp to oily fish. Females of the Mer race can produce small amounts of tetrodotoxin during breeding season which can be stored within venom sacs this is used to protect the young spawn if ever attack by releasing a tetrodotoxin cloud within the water for temporary paralysis. Merfolk average length is roughly 8' (240 cm) with an average weight of 400 lbs. (180 kg).

Enduring
+Average Lifespan for this race is 75~140.

Movement
+Swimming Average speed within the water 6 m/s (21.6 km/hr).
-Speed on land is close to none with one being lucky to cover 1 km/hr on land by dragging themselves.
-The bottom half of Merfolk need to be kept moist at all times while the upper body can be dried while sunbathing but only for a limited amount of time.

Slight
+Water low-light vision ability to make maximum use of ambient light in the environment by reflecting light off of tissues inside the eye coupled with increased light sensitivity.
-Eyes need to be kept moist if they begun to dry out vision becomes obscured going extremely nearsighted.

Vocal
+Labyrinth organ: Can take in oxygen directly from the air, instead of taking it from the water in which they reside through use of gills. The labyrinth organ helps the inhaled oxygen to be absorbed into the bloodstream. As a result, Mer can survive for a short period of time out of water, as they can inhale the air around them, provided they stay moist.
-Mer youth doesn't fully develop an labyrinth till around the age of 20 making them underwater bound.
+Underwater and above the Merfolk use echolocation they can communicate through a series of clicking sounds and whistles, each with their own unique vocal pitch.
+Vocal range is 8kHz to 120 kHz giving a wide selection to musical notes.

The Merfolks live a mostly nomadic lifestyle travel behind large schools of migratory fish. An exception to this would be the smaller sector of the religious Order of Rán. The Order maintains holy sites upkeep while holding a type of nursery within them for the more vulnerable youth till their fifth cycle. Your every day Mer on the other hand are known for living a simple life of hunting undersea and coastal life along with gathering edible plants. A tactic for hunting used is the Merfolks gift of mimicking sounds of other species in order to lure them closer into a ambush. Most tools are made out of simple shell, coral, bone, or teeth of the prey they hunt, while other materials are known to be used time to time they're much less common. Spears, sickles, knives, anchor grappling hooks, handdrillers, and while not something every Mer has is the gift of water manipulation. While those who show strong ties to the gift of controlling water are taken into the Order of Rán but those are normally one in a thousand. Most who have been touched can produce a small slice or the ability to push or pull something with the current of the water around them.
Traveling is normally done in groups of around 60 to 100 Merfolk made out of several family units following the path of migratory currents. While its not uncommon for more groups to meet up traveling in a unit of a thousand or more its more efficient for smaller groups to keep spread out while tracking prey. Travel patterns sticks mostly to heading North during the warmer season while heading to the equator during the colder.
