Slave Code

We of the Scandinvan Freedom Association have managed to procure and translate a copy of the new regulations that will soon be released by the Council of Lords that will quite innately alter the way in which slaves are to be handled in the Scandinvan Empire. We wish to clarify before any conclusions are drawn that many of the laws are merely the cementing in statues age old practices which, after the passage of this act, formerly governed the treatment of slaves. Regardless, we ask that the world understand that slavery is still alive and well in the Scandinvan Empire.

Imperial Codification of Slave Statues

By the grace of God, in the name of Erid the father of the Empire, through the assent of the Emperor, the approval the true Catholic Church, on behalf of the people of the Glorious Empire of the Scandinvans, for the preservation of our most blessed social order, in accordance with all that is holy, and through the consent of the lords of the Empire do we know proclaim the following laws to be in effect at the moment that they are publicized to the general populace.

For the Maintenance of the Faith

1. Slaves are hereby prohibited (save if they are merely transporting them on behalf of their master) from possessing bibles, faith related literature, prayer books, blessed icons, rosaries, and any other religious material save for crosses made from unvaluable materials attached to a leather or woolen necklar. Any of them found violating this portion of the law shall be subject to twenty lashes and two days in the stocks. The second offense shall result in fifty lashes and a week in the stocks. The third offense shall lead them being handed over to the Inquisition.
2. All individuals held in thrall are hereby prohibited from attempting to preach the faith save amongst their family. Any of them found to be acting against this is to be deemed a heretic and handed over to the Inquisition without delay.
3. Slaves are no longer allowed to attend standard Church services. They must henceforth go to masses handled by specifically trained clergy inside of designated facilities with at least two armed warriors prepared to deal with any impudence. Slaves attending regular services must be punished with forty lashes and a week on the stocks.
4. Thralls are not allowed to receive communion. Those who lie in order to acquire the Eucharist are to be handed over to the Inquisition.
5. All slaves who defy a full ordained member of the clergy are to subjected to eighty lashes and the gibbet for two weeks.
6. All slaves who defile their bodies with tattoos shall be forced to have them removed without anesthesia being employed in the process.
7. Slave marriages are not to be celebrated or confirmed by religious rite.

For the Assurance of Proper Interactions

1. Slaves shall not make eye contact with a noble who is not their owner. Failure to do so will result in five lashes.
2. All slaves shall be required to obey members of the warrior or noble caste without question unless if the directive issued interrupts one from their own master. Any slaves who does not do so shall be subjected to ten lashes and a day in the stocks.
3. Male slaves cannot be alone in a room with a free woman after dusk. The proscribed penalty for this shall be twelve hours in the stocks and no more than five lashes.
4. Males slaves must be constantly monitored when around trueborn children. The punishment for this shall be decided by the slave's owner and the father of the children, if the children are not the slave master's kin that is.
5. Slaves must avoid physical contact with free people least a whipping of eight lashes be issued.
6. Freeborn people must not engage in congress with another person's property at the price of a weregild.
8. Slaves who strike a freeborn person are to have the offending limb amputated.

For Orderly Master and Slave Relationships

1. Slaves who commit aggravated battery against their master are to be gibbeted until death.
2. Slaves who defy the lawful order of their master are to receive 50 lashes and a week in the stocks.
3. Male slaves whom illegally enter their owners dwelling at night are to be presumed to be attempting to murder or rape their masters. As such they are to be executed by beheading in all due haste.
4. Male slaves who rape/attempt to rape the womenfolk of their household are to be castrated and then immolated.
5. Slaves cannot be in possession of firearms. All those who are shall be expected of attempted violent sedition. Thus they must be subjected to lashing until they confess their intent.
6. Slaves found to be attempting violent sedition shall be hung.
7. Slaves are considered the inviolate property of their owners without exception and as such their disciplining of them or use them cannot be called into question save for religious reasons which must be brought before a priest.

Defending the People

1. Slaves who murder a free person are to be killed publicly through being broken upon wheel or by being drawn and quartered.
2. Battery against a free person shall result in fifty lashes, two weeks in the stocks, and a year of excessive labor.
3. Slaves are not allowed in establishments which serve liquor. Those who violate this shall be placed in the stocks for two days and whipped no less than three times.
4. Slaves who trespass on property shall be whipped twenty times and given a tracking a chip.
5. Slaves who illegally enter a home are considered brigands and can be killed freely. Those who are not must be whipped sixty times before returning to their owner's service and are to be given a tracking chip.
6. Slaves who attempt or successfully perform arson shall in turn be burned upon the pyre.
7. Slaves cannot meet in groups of more than five save if they are all kin. Failure to abide by this can result in result in up to thirty lashings and a day in the stocks.
8. Any theft shall result in a lashing to an amount determined by the owner of the stolen good and the that of the slave.
9. Slaves who strike a free person (when not in defense of their master) shall have the limb of first blow amputated.

The Rights and Limitations on the Acquisition of Chattel

1. All individuals whom are heretics, heathens, mongrels, tribals, apostates, lesser bloods, pagans, atheists, socialists, muslims, emancipators, communists, degenerates, etc. and are from nations which do not have legitimized governments are hereby declared to be the property of whatever civilized individual brings them into the Empire.
2. Free Scandinvan men are henceforth once more free to engage in the slave trade as established by ancient custom be it through raiding, privateering, the utilization of grey markets, and de facto legal purchases from foreign governments so long as the merchandise being bought is not an individual protected by Imperial decree or by Scandinvan hereditary traditions.
3. Individuals of documentable and legitimate Jewish descent are to be handed over to the Ralkovian embassy.
4. People from recognized civilized nations are to be protected from forced enslavement.

Those Born into Thralldom

1. Those born to a female slave are to be the property of their mother's owner.
2. Those born to male slave and a free woman are to be the holdings of their father's master.
3. All those born into slavery are to always remain chattel regardless of the blood that they might carry in their veins.

Defending Proper Customs

1. Male slaves are henceforth not allowed to be literate. Those who are already and continue to practice it shall be whipped twenty five times per offense. Those who are taught after this law comes into effect shall have their tongues removed.
2. Slaves cannot learn any language besides Scandinvan, stanaght, the creole Arab tongue of Vismer or Valdra, and the other recognized regional dialects of the thralls. All those slaves found violating this ordinance will be given forty lashes and shall have their tongues severed in half so they cannot spread their corruption to others.
3. Manumission is hereby totally banned in accordance with earlier Imperial decrees on this matter, though the right of the Emperor to exercise his own will in extraordinary situations is still maintained.
4. Any individual found to be willfully harboring escaped slaves shall be enslaved and given over to the owner of the slave(s) they were attempting to illegally shelter.
5. Slaves are not allowed to have their testimony admitted to the rolls of any religious, business, or government entity.

The Master's Prerogatives

1. The owner of a slave has the right to freely sell their property for any reason.
2. The master of a slave may chose to make their chattel work in whatever profession they deem prudent so long as the skills acquired in it and its demands of it do not contradict the existing law.
3. A slave's owner only restriction on the rights with a slave are they cannot engage in male homosexual activity and cannot without reason kill them.
4. The master of a slave can rent them for any lawful purpose.
5. The owner of a slave can freely prohibit their property from wandering around aimlessly.
6. The correction of deviant behavior in fields not covered by standing ordinances shall be in the exclusive realm of a slave's owner and their right to handle it freely cannot be contested.
7. Masters are free to punish escaped slaves in whatever way they see fit save short of death for the first occurrence of flight.
8. Owners can use whatever means are necessary to recover escaping property.
9. The owner of a slave can resort to any means to properly ensure that their slaves cannot escape.
10. Owners of slave can empower others with their lawful powers via contracts.

The Privileges of the Thralls

1. Enslaved mothers cannot be separated from their children until their offspring reach the age of nine.
2. At the age of seventy slaves are to become the burden of the owner and can no longer be used for excessive manual labor.
3. Slave unions cannot be dissolved and thereafter separated without a three month notice.
4. Slaves shall have the days of Easter and Christmas off.
5. Sundays shall be shift days for slaves for harvesting period(s).
