Currency, Trade, and Diplomacy

The currency of the Indomitable Borderlands is the Golden Bond. Previously it was the Left Ear, but this was changed as part of an extensive free trade agreement with Sketch. During the negotiations, both nation states abandoned their own currencies in favour of a shared third currency. The move towards economic ties with Sketch caused friction between the Grendels and the Triumvirate of the Yut, creating an awkward situation for Treznor as both an ally of the Grendels and a member of the Triumvirate of the Yut.

The Grendels have signed numerous free trade agreements with other nation states of the world. They have also been very active in trade for new technologies and the raw materials to fuel their industrial complex. Nations that have signed free trade agreements with the Grendels includes: Sketch, Guns n Whiskey, Hunter A Bettik, Koffee (before becoming a Grendel protectorate), ZaKommia (when they were not at war with the Grendels), New Innisfree, and many others. The Grendels have also been involved in numerous joint projects with their Wysterian neighbours. Most notable of these was Tyryte and Marldeep's work to revitalize the Grendel's rail systems, and the partnership with Marldeep in extraterrestrial mining ventures. The Grendels also have a special trade relationship with Treznor, from whom they obtained fusion technology and who generously provided many of their citizens as immigrants for the Alien City experiment. The Grendels were also signatories to Treznor's Wysterian Non-Aggression Pact, which was often used thereafter to escalate as many wars as it stopped. As one of the top dogs in the marketplace, the Grendels have extensive trade across the NationStates World. The Grendels have very close diplomatic relations with Cleo, Kamadhatu, Oilersburg, New Innisfree, and the Varangian Empire (Galicia-Volhynia). This has allowed the Grendels to maintain strategic military bases in Kamadhatu, Oilersburg, and New Innisfree, to project their forces faster into conflict zones around Wysteria.

There have been numerous trade disputes between the Grendels and internal Wysterian alliances. The Strategic Social Alliance had one of its members attempt to unilaterally threaten Grendel trade, resulting in the Corporate Ministry crashing the economy of Northern Arctic. The SSA membership intervened with aid for Northern Arctic, but didn't take any action against the Grendels, owing to Northern Arctic provoking the economic attack. The Indomitable Borderlands were generally on good terms with both the Wysterian Union and IWLEN, despite these organizations being formed as a power block to protect other nations from superpowers like the Grendels. They were always on shaky terms with the Polarverta Confederation, owing to the xenophobic nature of the continental alliance. Relations between the Grendels and the Wysterian Coalition were almost always hostile, except for when the Corporate Ministry briefly allied with the WC, in to gain access to Wysterian Coalition held lands during the Nephian War. Once in place, Grendel Expeditionary Forces were able to stop the Grendel Mafia from detonating a nuke that would have shattered the latest ceasefire of the Nephian Civil War. During this brief alliance, the Grendels also fought alongside with Wysterian Coalition, to drive occupying troops from Flamebaitrolls out of Patra Caesar. The Shield of Heaven, a Wysterian anti-ICBM program, came into a reality during a Kamadhatu conference, between the Grendels and their stronger military allies, against the growing threat of nuclear warfare by the Wysterian Coalition. Diplomatic relations between the Grendels and the New Seattle Pact were either neutral or hostile, depending more on relations between the NSP and the Wysterian Coalition than on anything else. The Grendels sent troops to fight against the New Seattle Pact and later fought alongside them. The Grendels were able to keep the Federation of Aldaron from slipping into the sphere of influence of the Trade Master, by projecting their naval power on several occasions in the waters around the hotly contested Aldaron continent.

The Grendels used their aircraft carrier diplomacy to good effect in Wysteria. The Grendels intervened militarily in the civil war in Blackbears, to restore the monarchy. On several occasions, the Grendels joined other nations of Wysteria to militarily intervene in the Great Heavens, Samaru, Munisha, New Innisfree, Nashban, and Nephia. There were suspicions that the Grendels were shipping weapons to Falconspear, during their rebellion against Hunter A Bettik, most notably sophisticated EMP weapons that were used to disable Hunter A Bettik power suits and naval ships. The Borderland Intelligence Bureau and Foreign Ministry ensured that the Grendel Mafia took the blame for the weapons they provided the rebels.

The way of the warrior and diplomacy are closely linked in the foreign policy of the Indomitable Borderlands, beyond the region of Wysteria too. They were allied with RedCommunist and by extension the USSR against North Alerica during the war between the two regions. Later, when civil war broke out in North Alerica, they sided with Koffee. When war threatened to engulf the USSR and North Alerica again, the Grendels became an unlikely focal point of peace. This was the result of RedCommunist and Koffee residing in opposing regions, but not willing to be in a war against their Grendel allies. After forging strong ties with both RedCommunist and Koffee, the Corporate Council of the Indomitable Borderlands was also loathe to take sides against either of their allies. The Borderland Pact for peace and security was signed by the Grendels, RedCommunist, and Koffee; effectively bringing an end to the conflict between the two regions.

The Grendels have also done a lot of legwork, in the pursuit of increasing their trade in the NationStates World. This once included a yearly world tour, moving from region to region, to renew ties with friends and allies, before returning home to Wysteria. During the 2005 world tour, the Grendels visited the following regions: AZN Pride, Free Trade Zone, PVP Nation, Pangaea, Boston, USSR, the Temple, the New Meritocracy, the Black Land, the Heartland, and Texas.
