From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sgttopia, formerly known as Polum, is a Nordic island country which spans across 3 archipelagos in the Arctic Ocean. Sgttopia is a constitutional monarchy whose government leans primarily towards social democracy. Sgttopian territory lies due north of Norway and Russia and just south of the North Pole. The Sgttopian Archipelagos have an area of approximately 525,000 km2 (202,000 sq mi.) which house the large and dense population of approximately 90 million. This makes them one of the largest countries in Europe by both population and area. It is also the largest not connected by land to the rest of the continent.

The Sgttopian Archipelago was discovered in the 8th century by Norsemen during the Viking Age. In these early centuries the archipelago was settled by the various tribes and kingdoms of the Norse, with warfare spread across the lands. By the 10th century, the nation of Polum had emerged as the fighting came to an end after intermingling with the native Sgttopians, a group of peaceful and neutral secular monks, who provided knowledge and enlightenment to those who would listen. The population of Polum remained small compared to the rest of the lands, and by the 11th century and end of the Viking Age, it had become almost forgotten thanks to its isolationist tendencies.

It had re-emerged by the 12th century after being discovered by European explorers investigating rumored evidence of another land discovered during the Viking Age, though Polum maintained its neutrality and sovereignty. The difficulty that would be present in attempting an invasion of a nation nestled in the Arctic Circle would be insurmountable without the knowledge of how to prepare, thus Polum was left alone by the powers in Europe. That was until Lord Nai Sgt from the Kievan Rus arrived during the 13th century after his lands were raided and destroyed in a war against the Mongolian Empire. Lord Sgt's ingenuity and veteran troops allowed him to directly take control of the Pacifist nation in spite of the conditions that the archipelago was prey to.

Sgttopia is known for many of its progressive policies in spite of the direct interference the government has in the day-to-day life of its citizens. This is in due-part thanks to the devolution of power granted by the central government to local governments of the three Sgttopian archipelagos. Sgttopia is a unitary state, though local governments have significant freedom to choose and enforce laws voted into effect; the central government ensures things do not get out of hand and steps in when solutions are unclear. Sgttopia follows a similar economic and government model to other Nordic countries, but thanks to the independence of Sgttopia and interference of the Soviet Union in the 20th century, it is in effect much closer to a real Socialism than the other Social Democracies of Scandinavia.

Etymology

The first known use of the name Polum came in the year 901 after fighting had ceased in the lands that had previously been claimed by Vikings from the lands surrounding the Baltic Sea. The most notable and populous of these groups were those from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Native Sgttopians lived a scholarly lifestyle and their closeness to the North Pole of the Earth gave them a perspective other nations and lands simply lacked; thus they named their new nation 'Polum' after the latin word 'Polus' given that they were on the axis of the world. In addition to this, the Germanic meaning of the word 'Pfahl' indicating their position at the top of the world.

The name of the country changed when Lord Nai Sgt lead a partially-peaceful conquest of the island and renamed it after himself. Sgt comes from his last name, though its meaning is lost to time. Topia is a greek and latin word meaning place or region, so when combined its meaning becomes 'Sgt's land.' The name was coined around 1242 almost immediately after Lord Sgt discovered the lands of Polum.
