Krotoik Legions

The Legions are the backbone of the Krotoik military. A drilled and disciplined standing army, they are tasked with everything from patrolling the borders and highways to putting down rebellions to invading foreign countries. Man-per-man, they are one of the most effective armies in the known world, with a versatile and sophisticated system of combined arms, and a mastery of advanced technologies such as trebuchets and gunpowder.

The Legion consists of approximately eight thousand legionaries, divided into ten field cohorts and two thousand siege engineers, scouts, and other support personnel. Each cohort comprises two-hundred swordsmen, two-hundred billmen, one hundred handgunners, and one-hundred light cavalry. Each cohort is further divided into sections of twenty soldiers. In addition, each Legion has attached officers and priests to command the soldiers, with an efficient chain of command that allows orders and information to be relayed quickly and without confusion.

Equipment is relatively standardised, to the point that soldiers within a Legion will even have their shields painted the same colour. All soldiers wear chainmail or, if they can afford it, lamellar, with a barbuta helmet. All soldiers carry slings with lead bullets or cast iron darts. Swordsmen are equipped with a spatha and a kite shield, while other soldiers - including the support personnel - keep the xiphos as a sidearm. Billmen use bills, halberds, and other polearms, with each cohort only having one polearm in use. Handgunners use the breechloading arquebus, a recent invention. Cavalry use lances and metal-plated round shields.
