Cabinet of Durlia

The following are brief descriptions of the portfolios assigned to ministers in the Cabinet. Each Cabinet minister is the head of a specific department of the government, with the exceptions of the Prime Minister, the Minister of the Civil Service, and the Attorney General – though the Attorney General does head the independent Attorney General’s Office. Cabinet ministers may only be appointed to portfolios authorized by the National Assembly, and as such ministers without portfolio are not allowed. Cabinet members listed here are ordered in approximate order of precedence, though only the Prime Minister has any formal degree of precedence.

Prime Minister: Head of government, chosen by the National Assembly and formally appointed by the President, presiding officer of the Cabinet, appoints other Cabinet members, leader of the majority coalition in the National Assembly, oversees development and execution of policy.

Minister of the Civil Service: Head of the bureaucracy, responsible for maintaining the professionalism, integrity, and efficiency of the Civil Service, coordinates action among government departments, typically is also given the title of Deputy Prime Minister.

Minister of Finance: Head of the Treasury, in charge of policies related to taxation, spending, tariffs, and other government fiscal matters, combats currency counterfeiting.

Minister of Foreign Affairs: Responsible for the conduct of foreign policy, including diplomatic relations, foreign trade, international intelligence-gathering, and all non-military international aid.

Minister of Defense: Responsible for the maintenance and readiness of the armed forces, chief advisor to the Prime Minister on issues related to war, also in charge of veterans affairs.

Minister of the Interior: In charge of various internal issues, including the prison system, immigration, disaster response, the postal service, and the census. Sets – but does not enforce – crime policy.

Attorney General: In charge of enforcing the nation’s laws through police action and the prosecution of criminals in court, enforces – but does not set – crime policy. Appointment is made jointly by the President and the Prime Minsiter.

Minister of Commerce: Chief advisor on matters of the overall economy, in charge of regulation of industry and the promotion of commerce, provides loans for small business and enterprise.

Minister of Public Welfare: In charge of administering all social welfare programs not involving health or education, including Social Security and various programs to aid the poor.

Minister of Health: In charge of the administration of the National Health Service, also regulates the pharmaceutical industry and promotes medical research.

Minister of Education: Manages the public education system, sets standards for both student and teacher performance, provides loans and grants for higher education.

Minister of Banking: Oversees the Central Bank, in charge of regulation and monitoring of the banking industry, as well as the investment markets and other financial services institutions.

Minister of Labor: Oversees the nation’s workforce, in charge of issues of workplace safety and workers rights, assists the unemployed with job training and finding employment.

Minister of the Environment: In charge of managing the protection and careful use of natural resources, works to protect animals and forests, also in charge of promotion of recycling programs.

Minister of Energy: In charge of managing the nation’s energy supply, works to promote cleaner forms of energy and efficient energy use, maintains the electricity grid.

Minister of Agriculture: Responsible for policies regarding farms and food, works to assure the safety of the food supply, prevent crop shortages, and promote price stability for crops.

Minister of Transportation: In charge of maintenance of the nation’s highway systems, as well as the administration of aviation, railways, and public transportation.

Minister of Urban Affairs: Responsible for policies relating to the cities, including utilities, sanitation, zoning, slum prevention, and gang violence.

Minister of Science and Technology: Promotes technological development, provides funding for scientific research, manages patents and trademarks, and regulates over-the-air broadcasting.

Minister of Culture: Promotes cultural development, promotes tourism, works to promote preservation of cultural minorities, and promotes international cultural contacts, including the Olympics.
