The Battlavian-Maud war was the armed conflict between the Battlavian and the marauders. The war began with the Battlavian ultimatum to lord Humongous. The war was caused by the Battlavians wanting to secure and expand their trade to the south where marauders were raiding. It was for many Battlavians a revenge for the first Battlavian-Maud war.

The ultimatum

The king of Battlavia, Adalbert II, had little hope that the marauders would stop and withdraw. The marauders often raided the borders. The ultimatum was that the marauders had to give up control of the southern river and its access to Battlavia and stop raiding or be prepared to fight like a dragon to defend their lands and raiding traditions. Battlavia had been eyeing its territories for a long time. The Battlavian merchants (mainly from Vlaanderen) were pushing for this conflict and supporting the army. An army that was thirsty for glory, wealth and revenge since Bergen-op-Zoom. The political factions pushed the king to declare the ultimatum and the army was preparing before the ultimatum was sent to lord Humongous.

It should also be noted that this war, as seen by the Battlavians, was presented as a civilising war to help the Mauds become civilised. The Battlavians saw the Mauds as simple barbarians lost in violence, like wild children.

The night battle of Kinswold

The Battlavian Prince Willem wanted to test the fighting spirit of the marauders by approaching the major town in Kinswold County, supposing that they would surely attack first. His camp was entrenched in a sea of high grass. The chroniclers of the time say that he wanted to give the Marauders an advantage to test his leadership prowess and the prowess of his men, as Battlavia had not known a real war for over a hundred years.

Jeroen de Geel, a priest who witnessed the battle, says that more than 7000 heads were ready to fight for the greater good and the kingdom and that the prince had ordered them to be on the alert.

Indeed, that same night, an estimated total of 1,500 heads emerged from the tall grass to attack the southern front of the entrenched camp.

Jeroen tells that a rain of fire arrows had started to fall on part of the camp, setting it on fire, in the first moments of the battle.
The marauders attacked mainly one front, but in the opposite corner of the camp had sent bombers to do some logistical damages to the camp but then retreated.

One of the strongest actions of the battle was the bombardment followed by the Marauders' suicidal charge into the Battlavian camp. But then the marauders had fallen into a trap set by the Battlavians. While they were entering in the camp, they were met with handgunners and canons shots. Outside they began to be encircled. But then the retreat on the Marauders side was called.

Thanks to the tactics of the wagon fort, the ribaudequins, the handgunners and the courage of his men, the prince easily repulsed the raiders.

Later, after the battle, Prince Willem ordered the camp to be moved back to reorganise and ordered the tall grass to be burnt when they left.
